Elaine Yiu Talks Every Member of the Nonsense Club

It takes two to tango, and in the case of the Nonsense Club, it takes six (or seven?) to have a great time.

Some years ago, seven TVB actresses came together and realized that they could be lifelong partners. Those friends were Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Selena Lee (李施嬅), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), and Paisley Wu (胡蓓蔚), all who came to be known as the Nonsense Club. The name is actually based on their surnames: Myolie, Nancy and Paisley share the surname Wu (), which means ‘nonsense’ (胡說八道).

“I actually don’t know when [this club] was established,” said Elaine. “We actually just had a conversation about this. When did we become known [for this name]? Probably around six years ago.”

The Unholy Alliance <同盟> star and her five girlfriends have never gotten into fights before. Though there would be the occasional argument, none of them ever got serious. “I wouldn’t say they’re arguments. We’re all very straightforward with each other, so we speak our mind. It’s normal. When you’re with the people you’re closest with, you wouldn’t run around in circles. You’d get straight to the point. We wouldn’t be nice about it. If your eyebrows are drawn too thick, we’ll say it. That’s what friends do.”

Each of the six girls have their own purpose in the group, and though they’re very close with each other, they’re all quite different. “Nancy is a very hardworking actor. She has high standards for herself, but sometimes it gets a little bit too much. Either she likes it or she doesn’t like it. She’s actually very child-like and playful.”

As for Myolie, Elaine said, “She understands herself very well and she knows what she’s doing. She’s definitely the most mature one, and she’s a workaholic. She loves to work.”

What about their oldest member, Paisley? “She’s very frank. She’s kind of like our big sister, in the sense that she takes care of all of us. She’s picked me up from work many times. When we couldn’t agree on something, she would just step in and make the decisions for us.”

Elaine described their youngest member Mandy, as “ditzy.” She said, “We’d all tease her for that. Very sweet but silly. She can be forgetful! When she’s behind the wheel, we all have to brace ourselves. It gets pretty dangerous!” Nonetheless, Mandy is also someone who is “very laid-back, easy to get along with, and has no temper.”

Selena is what Elaine like to call ‘the princess’ of the group. “She’s very much about herself. She has her own lifestyle and really knows how to enjoy life. She’s like a princess. I’m not saying that she has a princess disease, but more like a princess who is very elegant. She likes tasting wine, eating at Michelin-starred restaurants, and just, overall, a girl who really knows how to enjoy life. She knows all the good spots. She’s chill, very good with time, and always available to hang out. I probably hang out with her the most. We also live very close to each other.“

The six girls are all at their own level of success, and though the outside world would compare them to each other, the girls regard each other as learning partners. “We respect each other so much. Rather than comparing myself to them, I look up to them and learn from them, such as learning how to be as decisive as Paisley or as laid-back as Mandy.”

Asking if the girls have ever fought over a guy, Elaine laughed and said, “The only guy we’d fight about is Pal Sinn (單立文)! We don’t have a guy to fight about. Actually we don’t even consider Pal a guy. He’s a girl.”

What about Elaine’s own position in the group? “I guess I’m in charge of buying the cakes and flowers.”

  1. Seem like a great group of friends! Always nice to have good friends. Must be hard when everyone is in the entertainment business so its nice to see that they are so close for so long.

  2. It’s great that they are such a tight-knit group of friends. But they’re really not my style…very in your face. I don’t know which group of friends put me off more, this or Linda’s group.
