Children’s Versions of Chinese Classics is the Next Big Thing

Hunan TV’s Star of Tomorrow <小戏骨> franchise is China’s next critical success, and there’s nothing in slowing them down.

Launched in December 2015, Star of Tomorrow is a franchise of famous Chinese drama remakes that stars a cast of child actors aged 6 to 12. The franchise caught the public’s attention and became a viral success after the airing of last year’s Star of Tomorrow: Legend of White Snake <小戏骨白蛇传>, earning a coveted rating of 8.3 on Douban, the online Chinese movie, music, and book database akin to Hollywood’s version of IMDB.

Last month, the Star of Tomorrow’s remake of Dream of the Red Chamber <小戏骨红楼梦> pushed the franchise to new heights as it earned a pivotal 9.3 rating on Douban, the highest in the franchise. Star of Tomorrow: Dream of the Red Chamber was produced in celebration of the 30th anniversary of China’s 1987 adaptation of the famous Cao Xueqin (曹雪芹) novel.

Critics and viewers were blown away by the children’s performances, praising their strong acting ability.

  1. Very, very strange feeling watching this but the acting is serious! I feel like their childhood has been stolen.
