“Romance in the Rain” Remake Announces Cast, Including Zanilia Zhao and Wang Kai

The classic 2001 television drama Romance in the Rain <情深深雨濛濛> starring Vicki Zhao Wei (赵薇), Leo Ku (古巨基), Ruby Lin (林心如), and Alec Su (蘇有朋) will be remade for a new generation, and it looks like it’s going to be another classic in the making.

On January 2, the studios announced the cast for the remake of Romance in the Rain, which is based on the 1964 novel Fire and Rain <煙雨濛濛> by Chiung Yao (瓊瑤). Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖), who was confirmed to star in early 2017, will play Lu Yiping, which was originally portrayed by Vicki Zhao in the 2001 adaptation. Wang Xiaochen (王晓晨) will be playing Ruby Lin’s role, Lu Ruping. Ray Zhang (张睿) will star as Leo Ku’s character, He Shuhuan. Du Fei, a role originally played by Alec Su, will be portrayed by Zhang Ruoyun (张若昀).

Nirvana in Fire <琅琊榜> star Wang Kai (王凯) will make a special supporting appearance, portraying Lu Erhao, the older brother of Ruping.

Wang Lin (王琳) will reprise her original role as Aunty Xue, Ruping’s power-hungry mother.

The original 1964 novel, one of Chiung Yao’s most popular works, follows 20-year-old Lu Yiping, the daughter of a former Chinese warlord who fled to Taiwan after the Communist Revolution. Living in poverty with her mother, Yiping swears revenge on her father, who lives in wealth with his second wife and family. The novel was first adapted into a 1965 Taiwanese film, followed by a 1973 Hong Kong drama adaptation with Louise Lee (李司棋) starring as Lu Yiping. Leanne Liu (劉雪華) starred as Lu Yiping in the 1986 Taiwanese drama remake. The 2001 Chinese version with Vicki Zhao was the fourth adaptation.

    1. @tiffany It seems like they gonna use her to carry the other actors to the top again just like HQG and Princess Agents. Hopefully, this drama has good scripts + acting.

  1. Ohhh… I love Zhao Liying and Wang Xiaochen. Not sure about the 2 make leads though.

And I do not want my beloved Wang Kai to act as the despicable Lu Erhao!!!

  2. So it will be remake of the remake?

Anyway hoping the new cast will be better actors. Ruby Lin, however much I liked her was god awful in there. Vicki was sublime but the story was so in your face, it was in the end ridiculous. And I still remember Alec Su running after that bottle thing for god knows how long. The story can be better done by not doing it at all.

  3. Don’t mind the cast but I really dislike that story and Yi Ping kind of annoys me. I guess I just don’t like Qiong Yao novels.

  4. Remake of remake.. hey not so bad. There are some dramas.. remake of remake of remake of remake of remake of remake of remake………

      1. @msxie0714 Exactly how I feel in relation to some dramas esp. wuxia. Whenever I see a remake, it was like WTF. I stopped watching remakes. I think some producers think that remakes is an easy way to sell the production because the story is well loved. But in my opinion, it shows how much lacking is the depth of good novelists, screenwriters and directors. But we audience are partly to be blamed for being suckers of remakes. 🙂

  5. Psh! Oh hell nah, Chiung Yao is not going to slaughter herself again after Princess Pearl is she?

Zhao Liying who cannot sing at all will play a singing character? Besides, her face is like a cute cartoon, Lu Yiping is a bad mean tiger lady. Meaning it is not going to match well, Zhao Liying is not beautiful and likeable when she is an angry and mean woman. Or quiet and stern-face like what we’ve seen her as Chu Qiao. And Rouge who made annoying conceiting faces when she doesn’t have a smart face but only cute childish one. She is only successful as a compassionate/cute character. Much better match for Ruping I say, who she wouldn’t take obviously. Some fans would argue about how annoying Ruping is for sure. But in the past, we don’t care how annoying Yiping and Ruping characters are, what we know is Vicki and Ruby are both very natural beauties, they were able to play characters with personalities that have very big flaws in them. They played very professionally and realistically that we don’t have time bothering to hate those personalities flaws of Yiping and Ruping. The storyline moved fast enough to diverge attention away from how such and such are so annoying, so we focused on the story a lot. Even Xiao Qing was not as annoying as evil mommy in The Princess Wei Young, who conquered 70% of screen time before she finally died away..

Idols these days, nobody would want to take a role like Ruping because their acting sucks too bad when the character was not even meant to be that worse. Ruby and Alec Su were so famous but took such roles in the drama and it didn’t turn out to be anything like we’re hating them for being second leads. Their acting were great and it was a happy thing to see the same Princess Pearl crew together with another successful project.

Today, second leads are either the dumbest or best (but then the main leads will fail terribly), so the whole picture is never cohesive like the past where everything is very important as a whole and not a war between second leads or first leads.
