The 11 Women in Deric Wan’s Messy Love Life

Deric Wan (溫兆倫) debuted in the early 1980s to much success, starring in many television classics such as Looking Back in Anger <義不容情>, Blood of Good and Evil <我本善良>, and The Breaking Point <今生無悔>. Despite his early successes, Deric’s reputation was tarnished by his colorful love life and bad breakups. With his dwindling popularity with Hong Kong viewers, Deric left TVB and shifted his career to Mainland China. However, moving to China did not change Deric’s tendency to get entangled in messy relationships.

Looking back on Deric’s past relationships, his first known relationship in the entertainment industry was with Sara Lee (李麗蕊) in 1984. The couple broke up after a year of dating. Only 20 years old at the time, Deric was devastated by the failed relationship and used Sara’s name to write a song, titled “My Sara”, to express his feelings. He later joined TVB in 1986. Through filming his first TVB sitcom, City Japes <城市故事>, he met and began dating the show’s female lead, Ho Mei Ting (何美婷). The couple broke up two years later.

Deric starred in his breakthrough role in Looking Back in Anger in 1989 and shot to popularity. In the same year, Deric married Lee Mei Ling (李美玲), a rich heiress from Malaysia. However, merely a year after their marriage, rumors were rampant that the couple was headed for divorce, which was finalized four years later.

The marriage failed due to Deric’s alleged affair with former Miss Hong Kong contestant, Bessie Chan (陳明君). Though they denied the relationship initially, Deric publicly acknowledged the couple’s relationship soon after finalizing his divorce from Lee Mei Ling in 1993. Their relationship only lasted for three years, with Deric later suing Bessie for repayment of $140,000 HKD, in which he claimed to have lent her while they were dating.

In 1996, Deric met Winnie Poon (潘燕妮), who was his assistant. He would later marry Winnie in 2002. However, prior to his marriage with Winnie, Deric had once registered for marriage with Miao Hong (苗紅) in 2001. However, Deric backed out of the wedding last minute and did not provide a reason. In 2002, Deric instead wed his assistant, Winnie, in Australia. Despite having known each other for many years, their marriage only lasted for one year. It was reported that Deric and Winnie invested in real estate. However, the poor investments caused them to owe debts of approximately $6 million HKD. In the end, Deric pushed the debts onto Winnie, forcing her to repay all of them herself.

Perhaps his most famous relationship was with Sonija Kwok (郭羨妮), whom he met while filming The Legend of Love <牛郎織女> in 2002. Because the couple met while Deric was still married to Winnie and they divorced soon after, Sonija was branded as a third party. This severely impacted Sonija’s career and tarnished her image. To salvage her career and reputation, Sonija broke off their relationship.

In 2004, Deric met Chinese model Wen Jiarong (溫嘉蓉). They dated for a few years before breaking up. Wen Jiarong later alleged that Deric not only swindled her of $500,000 RMB, but also physically assaulted her. Deric denied these allegations, with his manager indicated that Wen Jiarong was only yearning for publicity.

In 2008, he met Chinese actress Qin Li (秦麗). A year after, he was allegedly dating Chinese actress Pan Xingyi (潘星誼). In 2013, Deric finally seemed to settle down and married Zhao Ting (趙庭), who is 20 years his junior. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2015.

  1. Finally some articles about my favourite idol Deric Wan.It’s very rare that an actor was so brilliant, so young. There is always the question of ‘what it could have been?’ If it wasn’t for the scandals….

  2. Agree. Deric Wan was a very good actor since young. Unfortunately, his messy love life cost his acting career. Sad!

  3. Mmmm. People who can’t stay in monogamous relationships shouldn’t be in one. Yet it doesn’t seem like he’s learned lol.

Too bad his love affairs overshadowed his career, but that’s what happens when public and private life collides and casualties are taken.

The worst thing is that Deric cannot even return to HK television even for interviews since he is so disliked for supporting China. Apart from a handful of avid series enthusiasts he is almost forgotten. A perfect show to invite him back was ‘50 Golden Classics’ because of Deric’s history as a singer and his theme songs but that never happened due to his disconnection from Hong Kong. He is a lot more popular than a lot of the singers that got invited to that show.

  4. I remember Deric’s relationship with Ho Mei Ting, his co-star in City Japes. I actually thought they were a good match at the time and remember an interview they did together where they talked about their relationship and how they fell in love (it was a special program from the 80s hosted by Lydia Shum where she interviewed a slew of celebrity couples…sadly, most of the couples are no longer together). Yea, Deric definitely had a scandalous past in terms of relationships, which is too bad since it had such a huge impact on his career.

  5. The problem with the Asian entertainment industry, your ‘love life’ counts. No one cares who you date or divorce in the western entertainment industry. Some actors have a string of famous partners but it did not dent their popularity.

  6. He is one handsome man!
But by the time I read to where he left all his debt to Winnie the pooh who seems less attractive than all his dates, and he’d also only married her the last minute, it totally sounded like a marriage trap! So cruel and evil, it’s not a love life but swindling life by using and cheating off women.
I am surprised that his looks and talents are seriously good to the point where it does not match at all with the blackness of his heart.

    1. @cutie777 Was there any love sparks between them? Maybe my wishful thoughts! Both are compatible though. So my question is Deric truly out of his love scandal cave, attributed very much to his own doings?

      1. @jimmyszeto I remember someone telling me a long, long time ago that he was thrown eggs in public because of his villain role in a lot of dramas. Don’t know how true was the news. Drama versus reality.

      2. @elizabeth Really.. I really cannot believe the viciousness of the watching audience! It’s acting not a reality show. I guess the audience is more civilised these days.

    2. @cutie777 “I wonder if he ever dated Maggie Shiu because she’s not on the list from his dating life.”

Their chemistry was only onscreen. Maggie was already in a stable relationship with Jonathan Chik (former TVB producer), whom she dated at the start of her early career. Deric was already married to his first wife in 1989. Since both Maggie and Deric had significant others already, they could only be friends.

  7. Yes he was a brilliant, but messy love life. As long as not metoo area, fine by me. He and Maggie was the ultimate golden on screen couple for me.

  8. Deric seems to make spontaneous decisions in love, fall in and out of love easily. When he falls out of love with a woman, he seems to draw very clear lines and doesn’t want to take over any financial responsibilities for his ex. Such as suing Bessie Chan back for the $140k he lent her and pushing all the debts onto Winnie after their divorce. Having financial entanglements will only make breakups more messy.

Another problem is he doesn’t end a relationship cleanly before getting involved with another woman, so exes often have bad things to say about him. I think Deric can be quite ruthless when he falls out of love with a woman.

But I really like Deric’s dramas in the 1990s.

  9. Waaaa…. He certainly had a colorful love life. haha… When there are money $$$$$ issues problems after breakups, that’s probably a sign to stay away from the guy? My goodness!!!

    1. @wm2017
I don’t think these money scandals will happen again since he has dug pots of gold in China and his support of the country is at his advantage. I’m not bothered about Deric’s personal life because he has proven to bring the goods to screen. For example, Stephen Chow is probably the most awful human being but you don’t feel that when he is acting onscreen.

  10. He doesn’t sound like a very nice guy relationship wise. Pushing all the debts onto Winnie when they both made the investment together really is a jerk move.

But, I will still watch his series if he has any good one coming out because I like him as an actor.
