Louis Koo Invites “A Step into the Past” Cast for Movie Remake

Fourteen years ago, Louis Koo (古天樂) won TVB Best Actor for his portrayal in A Step into the Past <尋秦記>. Throughout the years, Louis wanted to film a movie version of the classic series. However, his dream did not come to fruition due to lack of resources and unsatisfactory scripts. After Louis established his production company and gained additional financial support, the movie has finally been green-lit to begin filming next year in Inner Mongolia.

To retain the flavor of the original series, Louis invited the original cast to reprise their roles in the movie, including Raymond Lam (林峯), Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), Sonija Kwok (郭羡妮), Joyce Tang (滕麗名), and the semi-retired Kong Wah (江華).

When reached for verification of the reports, Raymond’s manager, Mani Fok (霍汶希) disclosed, “We received Louis’ invitation, but we are uncertain whether [Raymond] will film.”

After the widespread popularity of time-traveling series such as Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心> and Palace <宮鎖心玉>, SARFT issued a ban on time-traveling films and shows due to the “disrespect of history”. Bu Bu Jing Qing <步步惊情> had to cut references of time-travel in its broadcast last year. The movie version of A Step into the Past will have to work under the limitations imposed by SARFT as well.

While Louis originally wanted Johnnie To (杜琪峯) to direct, the director has little room in his schedule. With details of the project still to be decided, Louis revealed, “In principle, if the movie comes to fruition, I will reprise my original role in the series. I will not discuss other matters yet.”

William Chan to Film Internet Drama Based on “A Step into the Past”

In related news, William Chan (陳偉霆), Wesley Wong (黃愷傑), and Zheng Shuang (鄭爽) will star in an Internet drama based on A Step into the Past. Since the drama will be broadcast online, it faces less limitations than content broadcast on television, which is regulated by SARFT.

  1. I remember being crazy all over this drama when I was a kid… lol Hope this comes true and nothing beats the original cast!

    1. Opposite attraction:

Louis koo – fair became tanned dark
Raymond lam – tanned dark became fair

  2. My all time favorite series… hope the movie won’t spoil the good memories I have of it.

    1. @funnlim He probably didn’t invite her because she died in the original series. Plus her role wasn’t meant to be big to begin with, so therefore there isn’t much to her storyline. Although Kong Wah also died in the original series too but his role was much bigger than Michelle’s.

      1. @rainbow28 First time ever heard about that. I have to check with google and find nothing. Are you sure that Michelle Saram is dead? Because I only see that she got married and left the industry.

  3. Omg yes! This is one of my favorite dramas from TVB to date. I still watch reruns from time to time.

I was actually more impressed by Raymond’s acting in here than a lot of his subsequent roles (Eternal Happiness being the exception.) I also loved Louis’ personality and his playful acting plus his looks in the drama…but I felt his acting was only mediocre. Still, his character is still one of my favorite.

If they all reprised their roles…well that would be interesting. However, I don’t feel like Louis or the other leading ladies or even Kong Wah are even at that age to do these kinds of roles anymore. Better they find other actors and actresses to do them…even if I loved RL’s acting in here, I would also suggest someone younger to play his part.

    1. @coralie You should see how people react to the planned cast for the new remake version of 尋秦記. The younger artists are cast but when comparing the news of a movie remake with old cast, the new cast is bashed by the netizens.

  4. This is also one of my favorite TVB drama of all-time. I hope they can bring back all, if not, most of the original cast. I also agree that Raymond acts better in this series, than most of his subsequent projects. I hope this truly happens and that Raymond can reprise his role. It won’t be the same without him.

  5. This is one of my favorite TVB dramas of all time! Hope the movie will be good and not turn out like Triumph in the Skies movie.

    1. @arc78 Should note that the movie, if true, isnt made by Shaw Brother. So it shouldnt be classed in the same category with TITS movie.

      1. @looooooooooo Commercial success =/= good movie.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is a commercial success but it’s only mediocre. Why? Because Josh Whedon didn’t really want to write for it and the movie is only meant as a stepping stone to end MCU Phase Two and prepare for Phase Three which includes Infinity Wars in 2018/2019 as well as setting up for the next individual movies that will build up to that. Notice how the whole movie kept giving off hints of things to come and Thanos plus the infinity stones rather than Ultron? It was more of an obligation to watch it and you could feel something was off on the creativity level.

Similar situation, riding on the name of TITS and famous names brought it success but the movie itself wasn’t all that entertaining whatsoever.

      2. @sodi Actually TITS the movie can only consider as a commercial success in its hometown: Hongkong. In China, it cant make top 10 of box office at that moment despite the promotions.

Avengers 2 is a stepping stone but it is still a commercial success. It isnt as interesting as Avenger but not a bad movie. If saying of commercial success, I will take Transformer series as an example. Avengers 2 at least can bring something memorable and hints for the Phase Three.

      3. @alluka Oh, I agree. The point was commercial =/= critical success. There’s a difference for sure between we made a lot of money and this was satisfying on a creative level. This is the same, as you said, of Transformers and Ultron was only made because it had to be, Whedon was already swamped with A.O.S. But I do like how we’re moving off of Iron Man now and Cap has the spotlight now, it brings a more earth-bound feel going into Phase Three and he has more of a tie-in to his other work.

      4. @sodi In my opinion, other than the meaningful type (the award aiming ones), all other movies aim commercial success :).

  6. I love this drama so much that I try to re-watch the entire series once a year.

  7. i made an account just to comment on this LOL omg
this is my fav drama of all time!!! i gre up watching this drama. i rewatched this more than 7 times LOL louis koo was perfect!! i hope the movie will be good T__T

  8. i wonder what the plot is going to be like?? ahh i hope all the oroginal cast agree to return!!! 😀

  9. The movie has room to write. Actually the series and the original novel are not similar so the movie can run with a different plot to the series. Or it can just cut a part and make a story instead of running through the whole novel/series.

Personally, I hope the plot of the movie is closer to the novel than the series.

  10. I recently am re watching a step into the past for the third time lol hopefully the movie version is as good as the original version.

  11. Raymond lam’ s professor king & kevin cheng’s law ba can make into movie

  12. Superman v batman: dawn of justice

Professor king v lawba: dawn of law of physics

  13. If they really do a movie version and want to use back the same actors, it can’t be a remake of the series. All the actors are 15 years older. It will have to be a sequel. Even back then, I felt that Jessica was a bit too old for the role of the young Wu Ting Fong.
Now, if Jess play the role of Chiu Nga or Chiu Nei, it the movie it might work. These 2 are in their 30s (but still very beautiful) in the novel.
