Vivian Hsu Confined to Bed Rest in High-Risk Pregnancy

Currently five-months pregnant, 40-year-old Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄) is having a difficult pregnancy. Due to cervical incompetence, in which the cervix begins to dilate before her pregnancy has reached full term, Vivian is at significant risk of suffering from a miscarriage.

To correct her cervical incompetence, Vivian underwent surgery recently. Although discharged after 50 days of hospitalization, the surgical procedures caused Vivian’s uterus great stress and the doctor has ordered Vivian to be bed-bound for the rest of her pregnancy.

Vivian Hsu 10Aside from her daily hygiene routine, Vivian does not leave her bed. Confined to her bed for hours each day, Vivian also has to elevate her legs awkwardly above her head level. This allows greater blood (and oxygen) supply to flow to Vivian’s head. Lying in this position daily is exhausting.

Nevertheless, Vivian has remained positive, leaving a message on her social media account addressed to her future baby, “Hi Baby V, Mommy is eating well and doing all she can every day to support your growth. Mommy knows that you are also working very hard. Let’s both do our best. It’s not easy, but we can do it!”

  1. “cervical incompetence”

I know it is a medical term but I wonder can you serve a notice of termination to said cervical? But then cervical terminates and the end of any chance for pregnancy!

  2. Lying in bed for the rest of the pregnancy is like hell. I hope both can fight through this.

  3. It could fasttrack her to a premature birth – sometimes depending on the severity of the cervix dilation. Prayers with her and possible mentally scared her on her 2nd pregnancy

  4. Being pregnant at 40 is considered high-risk. But she looks extremely well and beautiful. Guess she would able to pull it through just fine.

  5. So servere situation, hope both will be healthy and safe. I not yet study such situation, wonder why first pregnancy can cause it?

  6. First time I’ve heard of this so googled a bit:

What Causes An Incompetent Or Weakened Cervix?

A weakened cervix can be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    – Previous surgery on the cervix
    – Damage during a difficult birth
    – Malformed cervix or uterus from a birth defect
    – Previous trauma to the cervix, such as a D&C (dilation and curettage) from a termination or a miscarriage
    – DES (Diethylstilbestrol) exposure

  7. Torturous, esp for anyone who is very active and doesn’t like to sleep too much.

All the best to her, with a smooth delivery.
