“Return of the Cuckoo: The Movie” Releases Extended Teaser Trailer

China 3D Digital Entertainment has released a second teaser trailer for the much-anticipated film sequel of the 2000 TVB drama Return of the Cuckoo <十月初五的月光>. The film’s first teaser, a trailer that introduced the film’s cast, was released on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Return of the Cuckoo stars Chilam Cheung (張智霖), Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), and Nancy Sit (薛家燕), reprising their roles from the original television drama. Unable to be together, Chilam’s Chor Gor Gor and Charmaine’s Kwan Ho find each other again fifteen years later, ending with a moving love story.

The second teaser focuses on the heartwarming romance between Chilam and Charmaine that will be played out in the film. The trailer opens up with Chilam blowing on a silver whistle, as if calling for Charmaine, and tells her, using sign language, that he will always be with her no matter where she goes.

In another scene, the trailer introduces a new character Kei Kei, played by Joe Chen (陳喬恩), who seems concerned about Chilam’s relationship with Charmaine. In addition, Chilam and Charmaine filmed a tearful scene at the Macau Tower, 230 meters up from the ground.

Return of the Cuckoo will start playing in theaters on November 12.

  1. If I remember correctly the series ended with her married to Steven AND having twins or 2 children. So this moving love story involves first the killing off her husband and her children I suppose? May I add I liked the fact she didn’t end up with him and generally one of the worst series and the worst performance by Charmaine who was already rather horrendous back then. Now we have this movie. Sigh.

LOL….I thought it was a horrible series back then but it was popular somehow. You gotta admit HK audiences have some tastes sometimes. Just like how people love that Triumph of Sky series and I thought it was a load of BS as well and they also have no more creativity and had to remake the same stuff over and over and now crossing over to films. SIGH….
I remember snake woman was married to Steven and had twins as well but somehow the movie version probably wrote all of that off and carri\y on like they were still single? They both look awful or should we blame the stylists and made up artists cuz they certainly do not look good right now. I know it’s after 15 years but still…LOL…
The only TVB series that i love was ‘The Green Hope & The Seed of Love’ but they were so very unpopular or should we say HK audiences do not like inspirational and educational series but just keep recycling old series. Sigh…..

      1. @kiki Generally the sequel will never be as good as the original. Everything will be different. The most disappointing thing about the sequel is that, they won’t include all of the original cast.
They will never bring back the original cast memebers such as Steven ma, Lau Dan and Mannor Chan, Sherming Yiu who acted as Michael Tong’s girlfriend and Chan Kar Yee, who acted as Kwok fung’s wife. Plus, if they are really planning on making a sequel, they should’ve make it a TV series instead of turning it into a movie.

Me 3. I also thought it’s a horrible series back then.
      Twisted logic and inconsistent characterisation.
I think this series got popular mainly because of Chilam’s Man Chor.

As for Kwan Ho’s husband and children, maybe the movie will say they divorced and the children follow the father. Husband and kids all dead with be a terrible fate for Kwan Ho.

I know, it was such a lame plot and it was just so popular so i totally don’t get HK audiences’ taste sometimes. What i hated most about it I remember was this kid you adopted and treated as your own son but he can’t date your daughter just cuz he’s mute? WTH is the logic? I mean, she continues to live w/him and let him take care of her but can’t accept the fact that he cant be with your daughter. I remember telling my mom back then, WTH do you watch this **** LOL…I watched bits and pieces while she was watching but few episodes in n you know the whole lame story. lol…

    3. @funnlim her hubby and kids might either die or divorced; hence, that mobby crying scene in the pic. Chilam consulting her, encouraging her to move on with life by doing daring stuff like bungy jump. By the end of the movie, they’ll get together and live happily ever after…. again. Lol.

Yea, I didn’t like the series back then either. It was so forcefully melodramatic. Charm was still learning then too. So nothing captivated me about the series.

It’s weird how TVB thinks mute can’t be with a normal person bc of his disability. They insisted the two are on 2 separate worlds. But it’s okay to write a normal person marrying a mentally challenged person who thinks they’re only like 8 (referring to Charm and RL Sister of Flower or something like thay).

“It was so forcefully melodramatic. “

Yes, this was another reason I dislike the series back then. Melodrama for melodrama’s sake. Tear-jerker plot deliberately made to squeeze teas from viewer, but, not done well enough to be logical/natural.

“It’s weird how TVB thinks mute can’t be with a normal person bc of his disability. They insisted the two are on 2 separate worlds. But it’s okay to write a normal person marrying a mentally challenged person who thinks they’re only like 8 “

The series are nearly 1 decade apart. The scriptwriters group most probably consist of different people. So, the mind set is different.

I think the drama you meant is “Point of No Return” it was a period drama with both Chilam and Charmaine as main but the guy she married that time was Sammul who also ended up dead at the end lol

  2. I remember loving this couple so much, but in this trailer it feels kinda forced? It would have been nice back then if they ended up together, although I was still satisfied with how things ended up in the series. It was open ending, but not abrupt.

I think a follow-up movie may have been more appropriate in the case of Detective Investigation Files IV. Jess and Louis need to end up together, more so than Chilam and Charmaine.

Also, I don’t recall the original tv series being so…weepy. It had some sweet happy moments too.

  3. Feel that there is no charisma between this two in the trailer anymore…
Like CL is always keeping a distant during interviews most likely to avoid Rumours…

    Other than that…

It would be much better if they can like twist the story and not kill off the plot like how Triumph… did (that movie was not a sequel so do not really matters, but u get what I mean).

Maybe the movie can start off by telling the audience briefly such as Kwan Ho liked Man Cho to the really end but couldn’t find Man Cho so married Szto Lai Sun out of grieve in hopes of letting go of Man Cho. As for the two kids, they are fostered by them from their Friend. However when she finally met Man Cho again, she realised that at the bottom of her heart she really loved Man Cho.Kwan Ho decide to leave Szto Lai Sun for Man Cho. Szto Lai Sun respects her decision and divorced/separate with her.

It makes more sense than out of the blue they became single?
Maybe they will give some explanation in the movie, do not really know since its not out yet.

Just my opinion, snake woman hairstyle is kinda forced…
But well 15 years ago, can’t blame much too.

Don’t really look exciting or interesting, but just going to watch it to let go of my frustration of how illogical it was for Kwan Ho to not be with Man Cho in the series. It was really saddening to be honest. Like Cho Gor Gor sacrificed so much…. But really their charisma don’t seem to be there anymore…

  4. I agree that the chemistry Chilam and Charmaine had in the series back then is not there anymore with the movie (at least from what I can tell from watching the movie trailers).  I think that was deliberate though, as I read an interview Chilam did recently where he said that even though there is nothing between him and Charmaine, he didn’t want to give the tabloids the opportunity to rehash their rumors and make up stories again, so he purposely distanced himself a bit during filming.

I don’t intend on watching the movie, as I have a feeling it’s going to totally butcher memories of the original series (just like the Triumph in the Skies sequel and movie did with that series).  And I’m kind of ticked still at the fact that the production team didn’t even bother to approach Steven Ma about  participating in the movie at all, not even in a cameo scene or something to transition things (since this movie is billed as a “continuation” from where the series left off) – of course whether he would be able to participate or not is another story, but not even bothering to ask, especially when he was one of the main leads with an important role in the original series, to me, that’s just wrong.  If they weren’t intending to ask the entire original cast, then why even bother making the movie and having it be a continuation?  Just do a new movie with a new story and cast.  Kind of makes it obvious that this movie was made primarily to promote Chilam…

  5. I guess I must be the only sap here but OMG, my feels!
That song! And Chor gor gor piggybacking Gwun Hou again. <3 I loved ROTC but that ending wrecked me for years! I cannot wait for this redo. I hope Charm and Chilam have that same magic again. I hated Steven's Szeto Lai Sun b/c he KNEW Gwun Hou loved Man Chor more so I'm glad he's dead, Lol. I'm guessing that's why Charm is wearing so little makeup but oh well. "I will wait for you no matter what." Le sigh.
