Grace Chan Denies Being Envious of Sisley Choi

After being crowned Miss Hong Kong in 2013, Grace Chan (陳凱琳) was blessed with many filming opportunities. Her decision to join the entertainment industry also entwined her fate with boyfriend, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), whom she often gushed about for being mature and attentive. With luck in both career and love, Grace is currently one of the most highly promoted fadans at TVB. However, good friend and Miss Hong Kong 2013 first runner-up, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝), may be exceeding Grace in terms of career growth.

Not only is Sisley filming dramas back-to-back, but the 25-year-old actress also received the opportunity to take part in a movie alongside Best Actor, Nick Cheung (張家輝). Despite being compared to Sisley often, Grace expressed that she did not possess any envious feelings about Sisley’s successes. “A movie is only three hours long while a television series is 30 episodes. A movie only requires those few hours to showcase the actor’s performance. On the other hand, TVB is a great company where I can learn things. I want to take things one step at a time. Besides, in addition to great acting skills to film a movie, timing is also very important!”

Grace shared that she was also invited to star in a horror movie even before participating in the beauty pageant. Due to her religious beliefs, however, Grace rejected the offer. “At the time, my manager asked me if I cared about filming this genre of movies. In the end, I rejected it!” On why she accepted the role in Blue Veins <殭> despite the supernatural subject, Grace explained, “The paranormal subject in films are much more realistic. Furthermore, it’s not as scary because of the limitations imposed on television dramas!”

    1. @tiffany She sounds jealous as she says being in a movie is not a learning experience to become a great actress. And I don’t like how she keeps using religion as a excuse why she cant be in a movie. That’s messed up.

      1. @jessehsuan I don’t think Grace is jealous or if she is, she and because of her religion, I have a feeling she seems to know how to control the jealousy. Plus, she doesn’t have much to be envious about besides the fact that Sisley has lead 3 dramas this year and she has only appeared in one. She had more meaty roles and dramas released last year so I’m sure it’s just a matter of when TVB decides to release them. I think Grace gets casted in bigger productions even if she isn’t always the lead and somehow she’s lucky in that sense because she gets to work with many veterans.

I don’t think she meant that filming a movie isn’t a good learning experience, but there is more screen time to practice and hone your acting skills in a drama, which is longer in length. I personally enjoy watching dramas over movies (at least Chinese dramas over Chinese movies) for that reason. You get to see the characters develop and build a relationship with them even if it’s only virtually. Sisley and Grace just gets to learn from different veteran actors, that’s all.

      2. @ladykriselle I know you mean well I’m trying to defend your idol , but it is what it is. If Grace is not jealous, then she should not come across like she is
, And she certainly did. Her comments real of jealousy and a lack of knowledge and common sense. She is old enough to know better, or keep her foolish mouth shut.

  1. What a load of pathetic excuses! She should be jealous of Sisley. Grace is getting outclassed plus Sisley is more likeable within the industry.

  2. The two of them has been pitted against each other ever since they debuted in MHK. I hope their friendship doesn’t breakdown due to all these rumours/accusations from the media if they are genuine good friends behind the screens.
I prefer Grace more than Sisley, but as of late, I can see a massive improvement in Sisley, tvb is giving her better more likeable roles and after being in a film, it’s clear to see she’s matured in her performing skills. So she’s growing on me and I find her a lot easier to watch nowadays.

  3. She indeed sounds jealous. She needs to go for PR lesson. By the way, isn’t her lover said she is very smart??

  4. Neither are necessary better than the other. But personally prefer grace than sisley, that’s just me.

  5. So if an actor only has two or three hours to highlight and impress with their talent, as opposed to a drama where they have thirty episodes to improve, does not that say something positive about the movie actor’s talent. This woman just continues with her foot in mouth debacle. She said her boyfriend is so matured. At his age I would hope so
Why doesn’t she ask him to teach her how to handle press questions, when to speak and when to zip it. Whether Grace is jealous or not, she just doesn’t not how to put her comments across in a rational, sensible manner.

    1. @bubbletea having a veteran actor boyfriend should be to her advantage…shouldn’t she leverage on his experience to deal with the media? i think many of us really hope she can clam up…better still, return to Canada.

    2. @bubbletea Same thing I was thinking.  Grace definitely doesn’t know what she is talking about.  A good actor/actress does not need a lot of screen time to showcase their talent – if they have it, they will stand out and ‘impress’ whether they are given 3 hours or 30 hours.  Kevin needs to mentor Grace so she doesn’t keep putting her foot in her mouth and make people dislike her even more.  Personally, I’m still not impressed with Sisley’s acting (and I still don’t like either actress) but at the very least, Sisley has shown some improvement whereas Grace has shown none.  When Grace starts to show improvement, THEN she can shoot off her mouth and be so arrogant with her comments – until then, she should just keep quiet.

    3. @bubbletea haha, I must agree with you about the acting in movies and dramas part. I think acting in movies is harder to impress people compared to dramas, simply because actors don’t have much time to do that. Each screen time in movies is very valuable while in dramas, actors have more room to develop their characters. Many characters in dramas aren’t so likable at first but become more and more likable at the end. As for Grace in Blue Veins, I didn’t like her at first, but I thought she acted well when she turned evil toward the end.

I know Sisley first in the movie, not through TVB dramas. I liked her in the movie, especially in the last scene when she was crying, it was so touching. So, even a movie is only 1 to 2 hrs, a talented actor can still leave his mark. Plus, in that movie, Sisley wasn’t the main lead, Nick Cheung and the ghost were. What Grace said is kind of the opposite of what it should be.

  6. Can’t believe she use religious reason for movie selection. Then what about blue veins? Lol.

BTW, Sisley new drama is very nice!!! Much more better than BV. And the plot is really interesting, especially the undead part. New twist. Great that tvb taking new idea.

  7. Sigh.. Grace.. what happen to you? You used to speak to well in public. It was one of the reason why I liked you on Miss. HK as you were witty when you speak. Now….She does sound jealous. Not sure if it’s due to translation on the article or what not. She really need to focus on improving her acting and show people she can make it in the entertainment business without her bf.

  8. She definitely sounds jealous and bitter if she’s trying to play down “acting in a film” to the same level as “acting in a television drama”.

  9. Sore loser. To think she was the winner of the pageant, yet she behaves so poorly…good at nothing but just gushing about her relationship with her boyfriend.

  10. She is in denial alright! LOL!

Ever since she tried to parlay her uncle-loving liaison as her career development tool, it has had a negative impact on her work.

On the other hand, her buddy has been focusing on honing her skills and is experiencing the fruits of her labor.

  11. I think the media twisted her words to make her sound jealous.

Maybe she was trying to say that being in dramas at the current stage of her career is better since she have more time to learn acting. Which means theres an assumption that the filming time for a drama is longer than in a movie.

Blue Vein is not very supernatural anymore when they ended the drama with the idea that Vampire is a Virus. lol… They incorporated science into it.

Can any1 explain to me why Christian followers cant act in ghost dramas? Ada Choi rejected a TVB drama bcoz of religion as well. She did act in supernatural drama before and 1 of it she was a ghost as well. So what is allowed and not allowed according to religion. Maybe we will understand Grace’s excuse better.

I dont think Grace is stupid enough to dig her own grave that way. Especially when shes been so good with her comments in the past.

Im not saying she is not jealous. She may and may not. Not really my concern.

    1. @1nit I don’t know much about her religious excuses but I do know that Catholic/Christian people don’t believe in ghosts. In other words, they don’t believe in afterlife. It’s just like Buddists believe in reincarnation. So I guess since her religion doesn’t teach her so, it might as well just not allow her to take part in it (such as filming, etc). Catholic/Christian religion has many strict rules/beliefs, some of them make sense, some don’t. What Grace said is probably just one of its strange rules, who knows.

      1. @june1 The Christian faith, be it in the form of Catholicism, Orthodox or Protestantism, do preach and believe in the supernaturals or para-normals. In fact, exorcism is still a sacred rite in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

On the other hand, your are right that Buddhism in its purest form does not believe or emphasize the supernaturals. The Buddhism practiced in the Far East as in China is actually a blended form with all sorts of native animism and mythologies mixing in. The classic example is the “Journey to the West” saga in which all sorts of mystical deities involves themselves with a monk’s journey to enlightenment.

      2. @june1 Christians believe in three spiritual beings: God, man, and Satan. Christians view ghosts as demons, who are Satan’s followers. Those who are not Christians believe that ghosts are real and try to communicate to the ghosts, when in actuality they are demons. When you open yourself to these things you can get demon possessed or open yourself to the supernatural occult, which is Satan’s world. That is why Christians do not mess with these stuff. Here is an example, where children try to call on the dead or play with the ouija board. They are not interacting with ghosts or dead humans, but demons. Humans do not live after they die, as in the form of “ghosts.”

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3596516/Eighty-children-treated-hospital-outbreak-demonic-possession-Peruvian-school-pupils-say-visions-man-black-trying-kill-them.html

      3. @peachyogurt well, according to you, Grace’s response makes sense then. But it’s just a movie though. I mean, a movie is just a movie, right?? it’s not real. Your ouija board example is for real. I mean, those kids really try to contact those demons/dead people. However, playing in the movie is kind of acting. You are pretending, not like doing it for real.

I don’t know, this stuff is confusing and I’m not a Christian myself. But for whatever reason, if that’s Grace’s belief, why would she play in Blue Veins then??? The excuse she gave as Blue Veins is a drama and it has limited horror scenes or something like that is still very lame to me. For more or less, the drama still has stuff that she shouldn’t take part in, what’s the difference then???

      4. @june1 No, still don’t make sense. The undead is not virus like vampire. It’s god”s will. After the thunder.

      5. @june1 Whatever it is, it could be that she is having trouble following her faith. In the beginning, she appears to stand firm for her beliefs. Later she changed and is also dating Kevin who is not a Christian himself. All this means is that she is not practicing her beliefs as strongly as other devout Christians, which is why she appears controversial and confusing because her actions does not represent her values sometimes.

    2. @1nit There is no such edict from the Christian faith that declare “Thou shall not act in any projects involving ghosts”. LOL!!

Seriously, it is not about “compliance with religious rules” as it is just a personal choice based on religious conscience. It is similar to one that someone would not act in a Cat-3 movie out of some moralistic-driven conscience. It is not that they are complying with any rules that prohibit them from doing so.

      1. @aiya thanks for your explanation. If you’re right, I guess Grace just gives a bad reason why she didn’t film that movie but using a lame religious excuse.

I was just surprised about the reply she gave when compared about filming a movie and a drama. I didn’t know much about her religious issues. Now, according to what you said, Grace seemed like she needed to learn how to talk in front of the media cause the two responses she gave was just incorrect.

  12. Like I said, this woman just has a bad case of foot in mouth syndrome. She said she rejected a movie role because of the supernatural subject, yet she took a role in BV, also based on the supernatural. Duh, am I missing something here?. I certainly thought the Blue Vein series was about the supernatural . Her pathetic excuse for an “excuse” is the way supernatural beings are portrayed in a film is more powerful and concentrated as opposed to the portrayal in a TV series. Hahahahehehehohoho. Is this woman that stupid and vapid or is she just outright lost?. I need to know. Can someone help me. @hapibi is so right about Grace being once smart. I too was impressed with Grace during the Miss Hong Kong pageant but she became stupid after she won, and then became even more stupid after she started dating her sugar Kevin.

  13. when being compared, the only thing to do is to work hard and improve…but this sore loser isn’t doing that. i wasn’t impressed with Sisley especially after hearing her high pitch voices and exaggerated acting…but in Presumed Accidents, she has toned down. although facial expressions still rather stoned, she keeps quiet compared to talk too much Grace Chan.

  14. It really doesn’t matter if her answer got twisted during translation, I think with these kinds of question, the best answer is always the shortest one. She was so not careful and just talked too damn much! She sounded very petty. Just congratulate your friend and move on!

  15. Grace seems like an attention seeking person, she’s the type that just can’t wait to show off how great she is or say something that compliments her. She is very overconfident and she just doesn’t seem very humble, she just can’t stop praising herself can she?

Sisley on the other hand did improve a bit in Pressumed Accidents, if only they didn’t pair her up with the 52 Lawernce Ng (27 years age gap!). Please tvb where are the “younger” male (good) actors?

    1. @melody No lar. It make sense with lawernce and sisley pairing. He is undead. Age is not a factor anymore. They look compatible BTW. More compatible than grace and Kevin. At least lawernce never try to act young. He acted his age. While Kevin still try hard to look young. Different class.

      1. @dramadrama lawrence has a class of his own…he doesn’t attempt to dress or act young. at 52, he still looks good.
his role as George in Presumed Accidents cast him as a gentleman who decides to court Sisley’s character.
sisley talks less compared to grace.

      2. @janet72 But I bet you can “trick” him into dressing and acting young.

Just like he claimed that’s how he got into all those cat3 movies way back then. LOL!!

      3. @aiya those Cat3 movies were long time ago…so he was younger then…don’t have to try too hard to dress and act young. if he attempts to dress and act young now, i think many of us will cringe.

      4. Totally agree TVB lacks the professionalism they promote lousy female actresses who are freshees cannot act and stiff such as Grace Chan and Sisley Choi they are so poor no standard not fit to par with Linda Chung or Charmaine long long way to go

      5. @elcmei
I think it’s pretty obvious that TVB show favoritism toward certain artists, they will just promote whoever they want regardless that person is a good/bad actor. I feel pity for those small time actors who have toiled for decades at TVB in kelefe roles and never get promoted. It is unfortunate that not all the actor/actress that can act were given equal opportunity.

  16. I love Grace and she is very friendly but her acting can’t make it!

I love Eliza and Priscilla more!
I don’t like Sisley! She is not pretty and very boyish look.

    1. @pillowpooh sisley has a tomboy look…but face is not long like grace. frankly sisley AND grace’s acting CANNOT make it. hope tvb looks at other actresses who CAN act.

      1. @janet72 unfortunately, TVB head honchos already have their favorites who they want to promote, whether they can act or not. They don’t care about giving the actors or actresses who can act a chance. They will continue to promote Grace and others like her who just can’t act. No wonder the film industry is not the powerhouse it once was.

      2. @bubbletea It seems like TVB will just promote whoever they want regardless that person is a good/bad actor. I feel pity for those small time actors who have toiled for decades at TVB in kelefe roles and never get promoted. It was sad that not all the actor/actress that can act were given equal opportunity.

  17. She sounds pretty bitter imo… If she was not jealous and a little more smart, she should congratulate her “friend” and not emphacize how difficult it is to act in a drama :s
Sometimes she really get on my nerves, acting like she’s the best. She doesn’t know how to be humble.

    1. @wellchu grace chan IS a pain to watch. she should be brushing up her acting skills as well as her EQ.
anyway, i agree with elcmei that both grace and sisley CANNOT act. fortunately there are artistes like joyce tang, lawrence, raymond to pull in audiences.

  18. I don’t like either of them but yes, Grace sounds jealous and ungracious. I hate her phony whiny nasal voice when she speaks in interviews. Strangely, she doesn’t speak in such an affected voice in the dramas (thank goodness?)

  19. Oh come on Jayne. Put Sisley’s photo next to Grace at the top. I was thinking they sure do look alike until I realise both pictures are same person.

I now realise why I dislike Sisley. She looks like the prettier version of Toby Leung and I never ever like Toby Leung.

Saw some episodes of the new series, she was bearable but the face… it’s the face… she is not ugly, she is just not my idea of a charismatic face. Therefore I switch to my recorded Nirvana In Fire. NOW THAT is an amazing series, even TVB tries hard to butcher it.

    1. @funnlim Agree. She does look like a prettier version of TL.. but nothing spectacular… no stand out for sure. face just not that pretty IMO.

    2. @funnlim You can’t compare NIF to TVB productions. All the cast in NIF come from acting schools and most of the supporting cast are veteran actors/actresses in China who are top in the stage play industry. It was an amazing drama series that literally outdid every series in China last year (except for maybe The Disguiser).

TVB are absolutely ruining it with the horrible Cantonese dubbing, cutting of scenes and changing the background music to songs that absolutely do not fit (the Cantonese theme song does not fit the series at all). I’ll forgive them for the dubbing since there is only so many dubbers available but the other edits are just terrible.

I suggest for people who are interested to watch the entire uncut series online on Youtube (there are Eng subbed versions available on Youtube and Viki for those who can’t understand Mandarin well).

      1. @phixster I plan to rewatch the full version after I finish with this version so that

        1. I can have the patience of enjoying the details in the fuller slower version

        2. just so I can rant how TVB nearly killed NIF but didn’t

Right now I am at the part where sickly Mei Chang Su raged against the stubborn but righteous Prince Jing. Fantastic stuff. I almost pity Prince Yu, almost.

Basically I think the series can be summarised as the valiant attempts at giving justice to the Chi Yan army and Prince Qi by making the Emperor admit he was wrong. The end.

And Emperor will never admit he was wrong. He did chop off his crown prince’s head.

Ahhhh no worries. No spoilers here.

      2. @phixster I watched the whole drama on YouTube. Very nice drama but the ending . Happy that ‘Mei Chang Su’ won the best actor award in China few days ago in NIF. TVB has censored quite a lot on their part.

      3. @celin i like tge fact thT it started with the news that he will die in 2 yrs. so the rest is jow he gonna achieve everything by then. No spoilers pls. I do hope he dies due.

Tvb cut a lot i think. Jump scenes. Annoying loud music.

  20. I won’t say I don’t care for Sisleybecausr she looks like someone I don’t like, that would be a poor and immature reason to dislike the person. I don’t hate her either. I just don’t understand why TVB constantly promote her and Grace and would not give the women and men who are real professional actors be a chance.

  21. I have a lot of respect for people who are devoted to religion but practice it faithfully without dismissing logic and rationale. These people usually follow rules and help the general populace as much as they can. Community work is very important to society.

On the other hand, I don’t think religion has any place in the modern world. In fact, it seems to do more harm than good. When you have science and education behind you, why do you need to believe in some unknown faux entity? And people who even use it as a reason not to do things, like film ghost movies or something, makes even less sense to me.

But the fact religions still exist in this day and age only serves as testament to how ignorant and blind people still are.

    1. @coralie unfortunately that is not always the case. Some religion have become so cult like that it’s dangerous. Sad but true.
