Steven Ma Returns to TVB for “Beyond the Realm of Conscience 2”

TVB has confirmed that Steven Ma (馬浚偉) will be returning to TVB later this year to star in Beyond the Realm of Conscience 2 <深宮計>, one of TVB’s several anniversary dramas that will be produced in celebration of TVB’s 50th anniversary.

2017 will mark the big golden jubilee year for the number one Hong Kong broadcaster, as it enters its 50th year on air. Earlier this week, TVB announced Chinese co-productions Line Walker 2 <使徒行者2> and Threshold Again <再創世紀>, cross-border grand productions, will be marketed as anniversary dramas next year. TVB also intends to continue the success of the Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> and Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計> franchises, taking their accomplishments to another level for TVB’s 50th year.

According to news reports, Beyond 2 is planned for 36 episodes and will be set in the Tang dynasty like its predecessor. Unlike past period dramas produced by TVB, Beyond 2 will be shot at real locations rather than in studio. TVB reportedly gave Steven a paycheck large enough to be compared to his salary in the mainland, for Beyond 2.

Reporters reached out to Beyond 2 producer Mui Siu-ching (梅小青) for comment. She admitted, “It’s true that we got Steven to come back to help. We plan to make a ‘leveled-up’ version of Beyond. It’s going to be set in the Tang dynasty like the last one. There will be three male leads and three female leads to carry the show. Steven will be one of the three males and he will play an emperor.” (Is it true that TVB gave Steven a large paycheck?) “Of course his paycheck leveled up too! He has a definite market in the mainland, and filming for the drama will take at least half a year.”

  1. Happy to hear Steven coming back to film for tvb as i miss seeing him in a tvb drama! But not sure about btrc2 as wasn’t a fan of thr first one. Oh well.

  2. Sequels after sequels. Nothing original. Remember when TVB came up with the Yang’s Saga?

  3. I don’t understand why tvb have to spent so much for him, when they have Ruco. Tvb NEVER give him any major, major role on super big productions. Basically, tvb gave Ruco a so so production, but Ruco able to carry it very well…..

    1. @dramadrama

Both Steven and Ruco series are very watchable but the problem is Ruco is overly exposed with many series per year while Steven has acted once in a while. TVB needs to rotate the leads a bit but by not neglecting quality of the chosen leads too. Steven Ma is definitely quality!

      1. @jimmyszeto Well, to me, tvb choose him because he is also known in China. Ruco only focus in HK, so the China people most probably donot even notice him. This mega production seems to join with China, just like other mega productions. But if wanna make Beyond 2, I feel that Hawick Lau will suit better. Haha. Maybe because I don’t really like Steven……

      2. @jimmyszeto … totally agree … Steven Ma is definitely quality … although he may act only in one TVB drama every few years, his dramas are memorable and meaningful with an impact

  4. i really don’t miss seeing him on screen. never a big fan of his, usually i avoid shows with him or linda chung

  5. I hope they don’t fill the cast with all these Miss HKs. I’m so tired of seeing the same faces every time. I kind of wish that they invited Niki Chow back even though her acting isn’t top notch.

  6. What is up with all these grand productions being semi-sequels/follow-ups to their predecessor?

I love Steven though! He’s great.
