Jackie Chan Wins Lifetime Achievement Oscar

Jackie Chan (成龍) will make history with his lifetime achievement Oscar.

On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it will present the martial arts star with an Academy Honorary Award at its upcoming Governors Awards, an awards ceremony that celebrates artists who have made lifetime achievements in the film industry.

The 62-year-old will be the first Chinese member to receive this Oscar honor. Film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster, and documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman will also be receiving the Academy Honorary Award.

Jackie Chan is celebrated for being a pioneer of modern martial arts cinema and is regarded as a cultural icon. He has directed and starred in over 30 box office successes in his 50-year film career, and has received worldwide recognition for his stunt work. Jackie Chan is also one of the highest-paid actors in the world, with a net worth of over $350 million USD.

The 2016 Governors Awards will be held in November in Los Angeles.

  1. Woah! Major stuff. But not the.. Is it cecil de mille? The one that has a spotlight in the main oscars? So he won a technical award?

    1. @funnlim No, not the big one…he’s actually one of 4 people sharing the award. It’s considered one of those technical awards that will be given out separately at some dinner thing. Of course the HK media are blowing this thing out of proportion, making it seem like Jackie is getting the highest honor available at the Oscars (and the gullible HK/Mainland audiences of course believe it, since they won’t know any better).

Right, it’s not even the big one – at least it’s something.

Congrats to Jackie Chan. I’m not a fan of his personal life at all (such a jackass and a total mess), but I can acknowledge and am proud of his professional accomplishments. One of the few (internationally) famous Asian actors of our time. I’ll give him credit for his work ethic/performing his own stunts.

      2. @lyu310 To be honest, Jackie’s primary ‘claim-to-fame’ is the fact that he does his own stunts and puts his life on the line to do so – that’s pretty much it.  If we look at his career only (not even going to count his personal life) – well, honestly, he’s not a good actor by any means and his ‘martial arts’ isn’t even true ‘martial arts’ (it’s pretty much old-school Chinese opera acrobatics).  Of course, in the eyes of Hollywood (and many Westerners who still have a stereotypical view of Asians, particularly Chinese people, and so don’t know any better),  he’s a ‘huge martial arts star’ on the level of Bruce Lee (kind of a joke if you ask me – if I were a Bruce Lee fan, I would be offended).  And yes, he IS the most famous Asian in Hollywood – that I do give him credit for (and that’s why it’s no surprise they would want to give him an award)….with  that said though, if proper credit was truly to be given, then three-fourths of the award should actually go to Jackie Chan’s former long-time manager Willie Chan — because if it weren’t for Willie, Jackie wouldn’t even have a Hollywood career in the first place (and wouldn’t have become as famous as he has been on the international front).   I  hope that when Jackie gives his acceptance speech, he at least acknowledges Willie and the huge role he played in his career (though I highly doubt that he will)…personally, I would be curious to listen to Jackie’s acceptance speech primarily to see if he ends up putting his foot in his mouth like he seems to do every other time he opens his mouth (hopefully he actually seeks professional help in writing his speech and doesn’t embarrass the Chinese population with the stuff he says)…

  2. That’s brilliant. well deserved! Jackie Chan changed my life. I now have a passion for all Chinese cinema. All my love and thoughts to him. x
