Michelle Ye Disses Chen Zihan on TV: “You’ll Always Be Lead No. 2”

Michelle Ye’s (叶璇) recent guest appearance on a Chinese talk show has raised many eyebrows, earning some pretty fiery responses from netizens.

A few days ago, Michelle and fellow actress Chen Zihan (陈紫函) guested on an episode of BTV’s talk show Miao Fu Talk Show <苗阜秀>. In the episode, Michelle took the podium to lambast and criticize Zihan, calling her unpopular and a “thousand-year lead no. 2.”

Michelle said, “At least I was popular before. I’ve played bigger roles than her, had movies with higher box office and had dramas with higher ratings! I haven’t even said anything yet! What right do you have?”

The 36-year-old producer-actress then ranted on about why Zihan couldn’t get popular, saying, “Why is she called the ‘thousand-year lead no. 2’? I’ve seen her performance as Green Snake in Legend of the White Snack <白蛇传>. No wonder she’s always number two.”

Michelle said she also questioned Zihan’s character, criticizing her for marrying a divorced man and joking about how she had just received a job offer from a producer facing plagiarism rumors.

Although viewers knew that the dissing was scripted to enhance the feeling of show, not many fans were very happy with what Michelle said to Zihan. A netizen commented, “I’ve grown up watching Chen Zihan’s roles. To be honest, I have no idea what Michelle Ye has done.”

Another said, “I know Chen Zihan and Michelle Ye are old partners and they frequently collaborate in dramas. I don’t know if they’re really close friends, but are they really close to the point where they don’t mind sneering at each other on a TV program?”

However, some netizens did defend Michelle’s actions, saying, “This is a gimmick to promote the program.” Another said, “It’s obvious that this is all scripted. It’s just a matter of whether the script is high quality or low quality.”

In regards to this “controversy”, Michelle responded on Weibo, “Just received a call from the staff. Viewership ratings have shot up [and] it has topped trending topics. Congratulations Miao Fu and Chen Zihan!”

Zihan said, “It’s my first time going on a show like this. It’s definitely a new experience! I’m guessing that the new disses will start tomorrow? Let’s wait!”

  1. Ouch. Who would want to go on tv and be bashed like that? Even if its scripted its pretty bad. And what is wrong with marrying a divorce man? Personally think this is bad taste.

    1. @happybi She didn’t just say it was wrong to marry a divorced man in the video. She questioned her character for marrying someone that got out of a 10 year marriage. Could possibly be alluding to some sort of 3rd party relationship rumours etc?

And it’s all part of the show. Chinese shows are weird.

I haven’t watched clips of this subject article but I have never like Michelle Ye as she comes across as someone who has a bit of an attitude. Then when she gets to the mainland she gets even more weird. But the most interesting and shocking thing about her recently was she found herself a mainland stylish b/f and she thinks she’s hitting the jackpot and praising him like there’s no tomorrow. While we can never fully trust any media news but when you hear the way they respond to those situations you kind of find it a bit credible b/c she does sounds crazy at times. Especially the way ppl accused the b/f of cheating on a ex and the way she responded to the reporters are so comical and acts like H.S girl who had her very first b/f and while there is nothing wrong w/the way you praise you current squeeze but the way she attached an ex for accusing her now b/f of this and that is completely appalling for a woman. You as a current g/f had no idea of what happened in that relationship? But yet she says she is basically saying she is low class and my current b/f is the BEST blab blab blab. She even said the ex had no right to say that her b/f is a JERK only she is qualified to say it? Excuse me? As an ex g/f she had no right to say he was a azzzzz? You know she is the that’s a bit classless. And the worst situation w/her is the DOG incident. Whether or not your dog intentionally bit off that woman’s ear and back of her head, its YOUR PET/DOG that did that to that woman??? She didn’t apologize and nothing over that incident or something? That is one crazy ass evil hearted woman if you ask me. LOL… That is just so sad that she was actually once a good tvb actress and now all news about her is just so sad but I guess she still thinks she’s one of those that got better exposure after hitting the mainland jackpot.

      2. @went never was a fan of her acting and yes, I remember what happen to her bf. Totally agree with you about her. Will be interesting if she and her bf will end up marrying. What a jackpot for him! Got a sui yu. Ha!

      3. @went Regarding the dog incident, you should probably check the facts before you accuse. Michelle did offer to pay for the person’s medical expenses.

Also, what’s wrong with her praising her boyfriend? Everyone does it, even other celebrities. As the current girlfriend, she would know more about her boyfriend’s life and his ex than the media. She has every right to comment about her boyfriend’s previous and current life. More right than anyone else for that matter. And whatever she says is her own opinion. It’s a totally subjective topic. That is not called “classless”.

lol…Yes, its very classy to have a manager responded to a situation like that. Did I say we can not praise our b/f like there’s no tomorrow? I don’t think I have said that in my post. If you hear clips, she says the ex has no right to call him a jerk but only herself can. lol…laughable. I can see you are a fan, that’s good at least she still have admirers even if some ppl think she might be hypnotized lately…. With fans she still have market no matter what kind of negative publicity she gets herself into.

      5. @went Well i can see you’re applying your own principles of what you consider right or wrong, “classy” or “classless” to someone else’s situation. This has nothing to do with fandom. Not everyone thinks the way you do, don’t try and convince others to agree with you, it’s a free country/world.

Also, great grammar you got there.

  2. Chen Zihan was initially smiling at first and then it started getting awkward. And as for Michelle, was she just summarising what was said about Chen Zihan on the web and re-delivering it in her own dialogue?

Anyway, weird show. I wouldn’t want to watch it. Its not funny and is bad taste of humour.

  3. Sorry to post this here but did anyone else hear that Kimi passed away last night? It is so sad. He was so young. R. I. P.

  4. Just watched the video. It sounds like the point of the show was getting someone that’s more popular than the guest to analyse why the guest isn’t as popular? Like some sort of constructive criticism?

Surely the guest would’ve seen the script or known about the style of the show being going on it. Seems to me Michelle was just doing her job.

  5. Getting married with divorced man is so much better than being together with a single man who had many girlfriends in his history, like he had many wives before but not registered?

  6. I feel like Chen Zihan is underrated, she does have some lead roles, but her supporting roles are just more significant and more popular. This show is pretty lame, and for michelle or any actor to come on it and agree to do this doesn’t make their character look good either.
