Li Bingbing Cried Over Initial Ugly Image in “Transformers 4”

Blockbuster film Transformers: Age of Extinction is one of China’s most anticipated films of the year, and star Li Bingbing (李冰冰) is definitely feeling the pressure in being part of such a big film. Transformers 4 is not Li Bingbing’s first Hollywood film, but the action thriller was more difficult to film than she originally thought.

Recently, Bingbing went on the Chinese talk show Day Day Up <天天向上> to promote the upcoming film, which opens on June 27. She shared that one of most of her dialogue in the film is in English. “My English is not excellent, but I had to present myself as an excellent English speaker. I had to really memorize my dialogue well, but the script was always changing, so the experience was a lot more difficult than I originally thought,” said Bingbing.

Many fans praised Bingbing’s looks in the film, but the actress said that she originally looked quite “ugly”. When the first set of character photos came out, Bingbing said she almost cried because she did not like her appearance. She then hired her own team to style and design her outfits. She also said she had to change her character name.

Bingbing revealed, “I portray a CEO in the film. Originally, my name was supposed to be Liao Xiumei (廖秀梅). It’s not that the name is not good, but it is weird, so I changed my name to Su Yueming (蘇月明).”

  1. transformers4 opens on the 19th june in hongkong not the 26th. it is the world premiere with the whole cast of transformers that will be present on that event.

  2. Wow , really ? I wonder if all of this really happened and how big is her role. I don’t hate Li Bing Bing, in fact I like her look more than Fan Bing Bing but this doesn’t sound nice when you complain about the changing script and costume design …etc and Michael Bay allowed her to do all of that? Look what happened to Megan Fox, good luck with finding a change to work in another Michael Bay movie

    1. Yea but Megan Fox didn’t have the Chinese money backing her. If Michael Bay didn’t allow it, they would probably back out from the project ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) which would’ve meant no Transformers 4

      1. Yea Megan Fox had nothing back her up and added to that she has ass for brain. LOL! 😀

      2. you are not serious lol…without chinese’s company backing it, i’m sure trans4 still going to happen.

      3. Yup, Chinese or not Transformer 4 still going to happen but with Chinese involvement, extra icing added to the cake. The more the merrier. LOL!

      4. You must be kidding right? Since when Hollywood movie depends on Chinese Funding?

      5. They don’t depend on Chinese funding but they’re depending on Chinese box office. With their population size, it’s a market you can’t ignore. Close to 70% of the last Transformer gross came from oversea.

      6. “Bingbing said she almost cried because she did not like her appearance. She then hired her own team to style and design her outfits. She also said she had to change her character name.”

It is obvious that westerners cannot understand Chinese and Asian looks, the way they put make-up on them is just so, so, so, you know oriental. It sucks, their outlook is so shallow in this aspect.

You look at the Asian backdrop and props too, they often look so ‘primitive’, medieval, and all along, nobody can or has tell them otherwise. Not HK, not Taiwan, not Japan.

Not until China comes along, and have a more prominent say in their imagery. This is good, very good.

Look at the movie, ‘Fast and Furious, it is helm by an Asian director but it is again the orientals who play the villains and baddies. So cliche but the gwailos love it. Not until the Chinese say, no, we don’t like it. They stopped.

      7. i agree western folks really have no idea how to put make up on asian faces. you never hire a western make up artitst to paint asian faces. i once had it done and it totally looked ridiculous. i know how bing bing feels.

      8. I wonder did Zhang Ziyi cried since she is usually the lead in the hollywood film?

    2. They are not allowed to even have the movie in china’s box office unless they meet certain conditions, one of which is to star a chinese star and have 1/3 of the film funded by china’s producers. It is in everyone’s best interest that she stars in it. She also has more experience acting than Megan Fox that Michael Bay would respect her opinions than someone stuck up like megan fox.

      1. Michael Bay is the alpha male. If he doesn’t listen to the male actors, he certainly won’t listen to anyone else but himself.

  3. It doesn’t seem like she has much of a role in the film. It’s so typical of China to make a mountain out of a molehill. Li Bingbing has a minor part in a Hollywood film and all of a sudden the film is China’s most anticipated film of the year.

    1. I know right. I remember Edison CHen was only in 2 minutes of the Batman film, and everyone was making a big fuss over it on the internet…oh please lol

BUT I must say Li Bing Bing’s English is really good! Go watch some of her interviews. It only took her a short period of time to learn it. I say she’s pretty decent.

I also want to add that this movie is going to suck really bad lol. I remember watching the first two Transformers movies and forgetting what the movies were about shortly afterward haha. If I”m still a kid, I MIGHT enjoy it…but not this time.

      1. Yup, everything about Edison it’s only take 2 seconds and game over. LOL! “D

      2. “everything about Edison it’s only take 2 seconds and game over”

        LOL

So funny!!! You’re on a roll today.

      3. edison chan..2 secpnds in batman ? didn’t notice…proparly the gals said the same )

    2. Most ppl feel proud to see their own race participate in a Hollywood movie. I dont see anything wrong with that. Of course without a chinese to play a minor role, Transformers won’t die, but what the film makers want is money, if they’re going to make extra bucks by putting in a chinese then why not?

      1. “Most ppl feel proud to see their own race participate in a Hollywood movie”

not really if they have a kelefah role, like fan bing bing in x-men,where she only have to say one word in the whole movie,no im not really proud of that.especially she is such a great star in china, lol.

    3. Other than China, Transformer 4 is also one of the most anticipated films of the year all over the world :). It was not out of a sudden from the begining.

Edge of tomorrow by your logic will be Japan’s most anticipated film of the year? I will say no :P.

    4. Mt… i like your comment “…and all of a sudden the film is China’s most anticipated film of the year…” wakakaka

    5. To be fair, there really isn’t much room for any actors outside the main ensemble of big american stars. The rest are robots. Everyone aside from Marky Mark’s little circle are going to be minor.

  4. Since her character is probably not important enough the famously in control macho director let her have her way. I thought Fan Bing Bing, not Li Bing Bing? I am confused.

    1. Fan Bing Bing was in X:Men, maybe you got the two Bing Bings mixed up.

    2. Me too, I got mixed up between the two Bing Bing(s) all the time. One is with pale skin like a ghost and the other is better:)

    3. I agree with Funn that her role was most likely very small so the director let her do what she wanted. I thought it was Fan Bing Bing instead of Li Bing Bing too. The photo above is of Li Bing Bing.

      1. Li Bing Bing in Hollywood has different status to Fan Bing Bing. You should not forget that Li Bing Bing has big role in Resident Evil 5 and upcoming 6 and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

      2. not surprised that li bing bing is more popular than fan bing bing,li is more down to earth and speaks better english than fan,fan looks more like a diva.

      3. Yup, another small potatoes. This crybaby is actually not bad. 😀

  5. It cracks me up when they participate in a small roll of American films, they highly popular in China.

    1. It does not crack me up. It just made me very angry that they are being make use of.

And you say Americans don’t exploit?????

      1. Bigger
Even though you may think they’re being used, but you should know china is also making big bucks out of any western movies that have chinese actors or actresses in it. So I wouldn’t consider them being used.

    2. me too,we used to have big stars that have played lead roles in hollywood like jacky chan, jet li and cyf,but now are they satisfied with a kelefah role?

      1. If you have to direct a movie to critique or give comments on movies, then you obviously should shut your mouth on all things happening in this world.

      2. If you have to direct a movie to critique or give comments on movies, then you obviously should shut your mouth on all things happening in this world.

BTW, how many movies have you directed? LOL! LOL! 😀

    1. Being a director is not easy and is even harder than being an actor or actress because you need to teach the cast how to act and tell them what to do. Plus, you do many other things too. Regardless of how bad any director is,they deserve a lot of credit for their hard work.

  6. LOL, “I had to try really hard to remember my lines.”

In the North American version, She had 2 words in the entire movie, “Time’s up!” and a total of 3 minutes on-screen. LOL

    Big star she is!

    1. I knew their roles are tiny and are almost like extra background people but yet they are openly praised, strange. I guess taking part in any western/American movie is a big deal for Asians.

      1. Anon said of Fan Bing Bing in X-men if I get right. Heard that Li Bing Bing got a quite big role in Transformer since its theme is partly in HK. Let’ s see because the movie is going to premiere.

I haven’t heard any praise to Fan Bing Bing in X-men except the ones for her cool skill (Blink). Actually she does not need to act much as her role only requires her to run and jump.

      2. Fan Bing Bing was ok except it was not a role that requires great acting skill, that’s why not much is said. TO be fair to her, Halle Berry and the rest didn’t have much role either.

I actually thought this BB Fan will be in Transformers. Here’s hoping BB Li gets more role but why delude ourselves? Even Mark Wahlberg is not the main guy. The robots are. The rest are supporting cast.

      3. Shia Labeouf was the main lead in Transformer together with the robots (though I never find Optimus that much of a main lead). Hence I do not think Mark Wahlberg will be overshadowed by the robot because it was not the way Bay built the characters in Transformer.

However Li Bing Bing will be merely a supporting cast. The discussion here is for how big her role is. Like Ada Wong in Resident Evil is considered as big role.

Well, Storm does not have many screentime but her appearance is definitely more significant than Blink. Lolz, I think Blink even has less lines than the Vietnamese general in Paris Conference. The one shined with limited screentime was Quicksilver.

      4. funn,”Even Mark Wahlberg is not the main guy. The robots are. The rest are supporting cast”.

lol so true,im sure that li bb role in t4 is heavier than fan bb,but still kelafah.

    1. The title got me. Cry because of an “ugly” image. She’s not even “ugly.” Either the media is making noise for her or she really is a diva like you said. Sounds like a spoiled princess crying because she broke a nail.

      1. If could have been a stereotypical Chinese dragon lady or geisha make-up that LBB objected to. If that’s the case, good for her.

    2. i think she want to prove the DIVA and power,,,, i guess they don’t follow the rule anymore,,, instead of that,, they make their own rules,,, so sad,,,,

I hope one day she don’t accept anymore poor and old’s roles,,,, than she don’t have to hire a team to put a make up on for her like she going to red carpet

    3. I would say if you knew u got money (power)to back you in any movies.. why can’t she “cry’ over her ugly look? She got the recognition in hollywood and of coz she can request for new team to do her makeover. No biggie.

  7. And I am crying over the fact that there’s ANOTHER Transformers movie! Oh my god why!

    1. because its a men’s movie, you women dont understand the feelings about that. especially if you have grown up with watching the transformers cartoons then you will understand what it means.

      1. Agreed! I watched Superman growing up and whenever there’s news about it, I have to click on it. Btw, sister here. 😉

      2. Kolo,
Sorry but was wondering aren’t you female? Just curious, you don’t need to answer.

      3. im 100% he-men,why? may a man not read gossips and discuss about it?,just curious.

  8. It seems like a crap movie! Seriously… T-Rex and 2 headed dragon?? Mixing the genre up don’t make thing cool -.- how is a Dino going to be more advantage in combat with a human form in steel and sword -.- this franchise is getting dumber and dumber >_>

  9. “Bingbing said she almost cried because she did not like her appearance. She then hired her own team to style and design her outfits. She also said she had to change her character name.”

It is obvious that westerners cannot understand Chinese and Asian looks, the way the put make-up on them is just so, so, so, you know oriental. It sucks, their outlook is so amateurish in thsi aspect.

You look at the Asian backdrop and props too, they often look so ‘primitive’, medieval, and all along, nobody can and has tell them otherwise. Not HK, not Taiwan, not japan.

Not until China comes along, and have a more prominent say in their imagery. This is good, very good.

  10. I was quite impressed at her English in resident evil so she’ll prob be fine.

  11. Vanity. Vanity. No all CEOs in real life are gorgeous. Hello?! To complaint her character is too ugly shows she is not a professional or a true actor. There is a difference between being an actor and being a star.

  12. I’d have to see the original prototype to know if this decisions is justified. I will just say that I’m glad there was a name change option – clearly the character is noteworthy enough for a name instead of “female CEO” – she looks good in the split second we see her though lol

  13. If the article is true, then that is quite unprofessional of her to debate and object to her character’s appearance.
Professional actors/actresses will do what is in their power to portray the character as accurately as possible.
