TVB 2014 Sales Presentation: New Storylines and Fewer Sequels

This year, much of TVB’s productions had been sequels to previous dramas. For 2014, the company has decided to stay away from old storylines to come up with new exciting themes. The TVB 2014 Sales Presentation features 16 dramas in total, comprised of only two sequels – Tiger Cubs 2 <飛虎II> and Inbound Troubles 2 <老表, 唔係呀嘛!>.

Executives Tommy Leung (梁家樹) and Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍) are each responsible for eight dramas in the new year. One of Tommy’s proposed productions, Apostle Walker <使徒行者>, aims to garner high viewership ratings with its recruitment of a star-studded cast. The crime thriller will feature Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Raymond Lam (林峯), and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) as the main leads. Recently having signed a contract with TVBC, Charmaine’s return has gained wide attention. Veteran actor, Tony Leung Ka Fai (梁家輝), was originally supposed to star in the drama, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injuries.

In Apostle Walker, Raymond will take on the role of an undercover cop with a complex triad background. Although the sales presentation clip was only a few seconds in length, it showcased many action scenes involving gunfire and explosions. Official filming of the drama will begin in January. At this point, Raymond is unable to confirm whether he will actually take part, since his schedule may be due for change.

A major hit from Catherine’s productions include Walk With You <陪着你走>, starring Moses Chan (陳豪), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), and Priscilla Chan (黃翠如). Myolie will portray a blind runner, in which the touching story is based on a real-life one. Getting used to a blind woman’s life and working with guide dogs for the first time will serve as a new challenge for her. The drama is set to start filming in February.

Besides starring in Property Protector <守業者>, Tavia Yeung (楊怡) will also be female lead in the newly proposed series, Extensive Eyesight <天眼>, alongside Ruco Chan (陳展鵬). She expressed, “I think the drama will be a good one. I’ve worked with Ruco before in The Other Truth <真相>, and we get along well. There will also be a refreshing feel with the addition of Tony Hung (洪永城) and Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘).” Details for the new modern drama have not been released yet, since it is still in the planning stage.

Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) sees her fiery policewoman role in Tiger Cubs 2 as a big breakthrough. Speaking of the idea of sequels, she exclaimed, “Sequels are fine, but there shouldn’t be too many installments. If the story continues on and on, it would be tedious for the actors. It’s hard for them to achieve a breakthrough.” In November, Linda will star in a new period drama, Big Apothecary <大藥坊>, where she will portray the first female doctor in China.

  1. i’m actually quite anticipating 2014 dramas, it seems refreshing and i’m glad they’re stepping away from sequels. added on with the fact that they’re starting the new policy of needing an almost completed script before starting filming as well as more hours to rest, i am expecting the quality of tvb dramas to be higher because the artists will have more time to fully prepare and give us their best performances.

    1. also super glad Fred was mentioned in this article hehe, noticed by Tavia too! excited to see how that would turn out!

    2. I don’t think I will have that high expectations because I don’t want to be let down by tvb. And they usually do.

  2. sorry but can anyone tell me what happened to Virginia Lok?

    1. Maybe TVB came to their senses and realized that she was not too bright so they fired her???

      1. @HTS: LOL…unfortunately, no such luck. She’s still there and in her same position (head of production and artists’ management)…she’s probably just trying to keep a low profile nowadays given all the negative press she’s been getting the past few years. I doubt TVB will ever get rid of her….

      2. Thanks for the info! Gosh I am so disappointed that they did not fire her. She is such an idiot.

      3. Well, in the lighting show the media still put all attention on her instead of all other artists. Sandy Yu and Catherine Tsang tried hard to get her fame by pulling 620 to TVBC but too bad, they can’t.

If 620 leaves Txb, perhaps better to ask Sandy Yu and Catherine Tsang to go together. Their favorism card game isnt any less annoying but clearer than 620. Sandy Yu’s comments are much more stupid, such as the one we are having.

  3. OMG my wish is fulfilled!!!! Ruta is in another drama after 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

    1. Im excited for this pairing too- really wanted to see The Other Truth 2 happen, since the ending for the 1st installment sucked big time T___T loved the chemistry between Ruco and Tavia. Looking forward to their collaboration again.

      1. Totally…..but omg I rather a tot 2 than a new show :p

  4. Apostle Walker sounds very interesting especially with Charm….
Walk with You reminds me of Invisible Journey with Jessica Hsuan and Bowie Lam
Big Apothecary sounds like Jewel in Palace o___O wow TVB is desperate to promoting Linda to number one sister…Hope her acting doesn’t disappoint then
    Looking forward to 2014

  5. Modern drama?? I Thought 天眼 was a period drama 😐

    1. 天眼 is about computer programming. I believe there is some fantasy involved as well.

  6. I really like the sound of 使徒行者 with Michael Miu, Raymond Lam and Charmaine Sheh. Sounds interesting.

And as for inbound troubles 2, not quite sure if I am into that since I didn’t watch the first one..

    1. But this plot sounds similar to Ruse of Engagement! Oh please air Ruse of Engagement first! Don’t waste Ruco’s effort!!
I really hope it won’t be postponed again in 2014 because of Tiger II and this 使徒行者!

  7. May be fewer sequels but the stories are same old same old. All I ask for is good casting, good acting and please do not stretch a story beyond what it should be.

    1. and i ask more martial arts series please do a remake of dragon sabre and heavenly sword with sammo hung as martial art director.

      1. Yes this would be good, provided if they don’t use too much CGI. Those days without CGI Tony Leung, Andy Lau and Michael Miu still managed to “sell” but unlike the ones in recent years where either the acting, cast, storyline or etc just don’t look appealing that much. I missed those days where I wouldn’t want to miss any seconds on a series from the beginning till end. As of now, I couldn’t be much bothered even if I missed a few eps. Predictable storyline, boring sequence, etc… I think TVB has lost its glory.

      2. don’t think TVB can remake DSHSword. I recalled reading somewhere that QY banned TVB from adapting any of his novels.

    2. All I ask is no more self righteousness self indulgent review from Funn!!!!

Ya, her fan-si will say dun read if cant take it, but alas such a waste of bits n bytes.

  8. I hate how TVB artists are divided into two camps. Why can’t they just come up with something and work together? Sick of seeing the same people starring together over and over again when they haven’t even worked with the other half of TVB yet.

    1. i thought that raymond lam is from the camp virginia lok,but he switch now to tommy leung’s camp?

    2. ^ This i TOTALLY agree with you- why are the artists’ awalsy divided into two groups…they work with the same group of people over and over again..it’d be nice to see everyone having opportunities to work with different artists’ within the same company, not that there are many variety of artists’ left in the company anyway-and yet they still like to split into groups…

    3. Totally agree. Same old partnerships, same old stories, slight repackaging, but still boring. TVB have loads of things to sort out including the break up of the two camps!

  9. Another new drama with PANGYi but 真相 2 has not even been announced after like two years and they even confirmed it. What is wrong with tvb:(

    1. Agree! If the plot and scrips are good, what does it matter it its a sequel or not? We have seen many successful sequels before – Burning Flame 3, Forensic Heroes 2&3 , (though not a big fans of FH3), etc.

  10. I have a feeling fred is gonna have a big supporting role in tavia’s new drama due to his popularity from Voice of the Stars…

  11. Paradise Eve is an exciting theme plzzzzzzzzz work on it TVBBBBBBB!

  12. I wonder if TVB can truly come up with new and fresh ideas??? I thought their creativity cow was already milked dry???

    1. Most of the cow moooo over to HKTV which they haven’t start it yet. MOOOOOOOOOOOO

  13. Really hope ‘天眼’ wld work out tavia looks much prettier in long hair and 鹏怡 is the best on screen couple

  14. I wonder where is Ruse of Engagement? Have they decided to completely dump the series?

    1. yeah I was thinking that too… I really want to watch since it has Ruco and Ron.

  15. I wish it was Steven and Linda, I really like them together. Perfect in a journey called life, a watchdog tale, and ghost writer.

    1. it is not like she is filming 4 dramas, she is only POSSIBLY filming one. you hate her that much?

    2. If you dislike her that much just don’t watch the series that she is in. Or if you do watch it, just pay attention to the story, plot and other things and not her.

  16. NEW NEWS: TAVIA’S A PROFESSIONAL KILLER IN TIN NGAN :/

  17. Btw,@jaynestars is there any report on the 2014 sales presentations?

  18. I think that tvb scriptwriters should collaborate with scriptwriters from other countries. That way, both countries could come up with something new.
