Louis Koo’s “Z Storm” Stands Out at Cannes Film Festival

Although the stars of Z Storm <Z風暴> were unable to attend the 2014 Cannes Film Festival to promote the film, many film studios have immediately expressed their interest to purchase the international distribution rights for the big-budget crime thriller.

Produced by John Chong (莊澄) and directed by David Lam (林德禄), it stars Louis Koo (古天樂), Gordon Lam (林家棟), Dada Chan (陳靜), Michael Wong (王敏德), and Lo Hoi Pang (盧海鵬), as investigators and pawns stuck in between a three-way conflict among the ICAC, the police, and the government.

A 2-minute trailer was shown at the Cannes Film Festival recently, attracting many film studios. Asian regions like Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Korea have expressed their interest to immediately purchase the film’s distribution rights. Australia and New Zealand were also intrigued by the film’s story. It was also reported that an American company has already purchased the film’s rights, and is also negotiating with Pegasus Motion Pictures for a Hollywood remake.

Critics at the Cannes Film Festival compared Z Storm to the trend-sending 2002 crime thriller Infernal Affairs <無間道>, produced at Media Asia. Producer John Chong also described the pace of the film to be similar to the American television series, 24.

Z Storm, produced at Pegasus Motion Pictures, began shooting in December 2013 and recently wrapped up its production in Hong Kong. It is currently set for a summer 2014 release.
