Nick Cheung Makes Directorial Debut With Horror Film, “Yu Lan Magic”

Nick Cheung (張家輝) will make his directorial debut in upcoming horror movie, Yu Lan Magic <盂蘭神功>. The movie is scheduled to start filming in Malaysia in June and will feature Carrie Ng (吳家麗) and Taiwanese actress, Annie Liu (劉心悠). Describing his female leads as stunning and sexy, however, Nicky claimed his movie will be filled with excitement but nothing pornographic.

Annie was flattered that Nick has included her in Yu Lan Magic. Earlier, she had planned to take a break from filming, but she accepted Nick’s new film since wanted to work with him and support Hong Kong films. Annie will have many scenes that would challenge her acting skills, including being possessed by a ghost in the movie. In preparation, Annie has been watching classic horror films such as The Exorcist.

Former Category III actress, Carrie Ng, will portray Nick’s mother in the movie despite their narrow age gap.  Like Annie, Carrie agreed to film the movie to support Nick’s directing effort. Having left the Hong Kong movie industry for years, Carrie felt it is the right time to return In Yu Lan Magic Carrie will also portray Muk Gui Ying in an opera. In 1994, Carrie also played an opera singer in director Derek Yee ‘s (爾冬陞) C’est La Vie, Mon Chéri <新不了情> so she is not unfamiliar with portraying an opera singer, but Nick arranged for her to train under an opera singer. Carrie is dreading the thick opera makeup application in upcoming scenes.

Having filmed horror movies in the past, Carrie is fearful of what she may witness while filming. While filming a horror film for Lam Ching Ying (林正英), Carrie shuddered as she related, “In that period film, I played the role of a red-dressed female ghost. One day around 4 AM, I was walking out of the makeup room when I saw a woman dressed just like me. However, the strange thing is no else saw her and the director also confirmed he did not recruit any stand-ins for me. Thinking back, it was really horrifying.”
