Sean Lau’s “Overheard 3” Grabs 11 Hong Kong Film Award Nominations

The official nominations list for the 34th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards was released today, with crime thriller Overheard 3 <竊聽風雲3> leading the pack with 11 nominations total, including one of two Best Actor nods for Sean Lau (劉青雲). The final winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Center Theater on April 19.

As expected, Sean Lau picked up two Best Actor nominations, one for Overheard 3 and the other for Insanity <暴風雨>, marking the 15th time he has been nominated for the award. He is also the only one among the Best Actor candidates, namely Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), Eddie Peng (彭于晏), and Huang Bo (黃渤), to have previously won the Best Actor award.

Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) received a Best Actress nomination for her role in SARA <雛妓> — the first time she has been nominated for the award since Simply Actors <戲王之王> in 2008. This time, her competition includes Sandra Ng (吳君如), Vicki Zhao (趙薇), Tang Wei (湯唯), and Zhou Xun (周迅).

Singer-turned-actress Ivana Wong (王菀之) set a record for the most Hong Kong Film Awards nominations for a single person, having received three separate nominations for Best New Performer, one nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and one nomination for Best Original Film Song. However, her multiple Best New Performer nods may work against her, as the votes in that category will likely be scattered among her three roles.

The biggest winner of the night is expected to be Overheard 3, which picked up 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and two Best Supporting Actors. Tang Wei’s The Golden Era <黃金時代> and Eddie Peng’s Rise of the Legend <黃飛鴻之英雄有夢> each received 10 nominations.

  1. if sean wins its because hk just giving him another award daniel should get it

  2. lol overhead 3 is just so so. No quality already. 10 years later hopefully new blood will create something good.

  3. How ironic when usually movie stars blast TV serie using the same people over and over again nothing is special…

oh hey look HK film is heading the same direction keeps on recycling…

    1. hi, hk is just a small place you know, its already a miracle they have brought so many stars in the past.

  4. I wonder how many awards for all three films? I don’t suppose tits movie will get any nomination next year eh?

  5. The fact that ivana Wong gets nominated three times in the same category is a complete joke

    1. THAT I don’t understand. More chances, but the votes will be split or what?

    2. agree,i dont like ivana wong either, she is a overated atress and singer, not even pretty too.

  6. How come Loius Koo is not nominated?!?! He deserves to win best actor. Even Daniel Wu has a nomination and won.

  7. Daniel had never won before. Even Lau Ching Wan had only won once despite being nominated for 13 times before this. Honestly, if Louis kept acting in the same movies with Lau Ching Wan, he will get overshined by him every time. His chance will come one day, but not this year. He didn’t produce a great performance in 2014 (he was good in Aberdeen, but not great)

  8. Wow sean has 2 nominations for the best actor it’s not only Hong Kong that give the awards to the same people over and over even the U.S does the same with oscars

    1. He doesn’t even need to learn English jet li and Jackie chan English is poor

      1. Yes, but Jet ji/ Jacky chan selling points are their comidic action skills. Sean is drama actor just like Chow yun fat.

      2. Jet Li’s selling point is his COMEDIC action skills? Sure about that?
