2014 Jade Solid Gold Awards: Jinny Ng Wins Song of the Year

TVB’s 2014 Jade Solid Gold Awards was held on January 18. Hosted by Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Amigo Choi (崔建邦) and Bob Lam (林盛斌), a total of 38 awards were given out.

In previous years, only singers who have signed contracts with TVB were allowed to receive nominations. This year, JSG broadened its horizons by nominating any singer, including non-contracted singers, who were featured in the JSG music charts of 2014.

Despite the new change, many artistes who are signed to Universal, Warner, and Sun Entertainment did not attend the awards show. Due to JSG’s no show, no award basis, most of the winners were from EEG, East Asia Music, and TVB’s own record label, The Voice Entertainment.

Winners of the Gold Song Gold Award and the Gold Song Awards were chosen from results based on the surveys conducted by the Hong Kong University and TVB’s own voting polls. Recipients of the Most Popular Male Singer, Most Popular Female Singer, and Most Popular New Artist awards were decided by a panel of judges and results from popularity polls.

    1. This is because you can hardly make a living anymore with HK music. A lot of singers want to make a movie or drama, like Kay Tse (with no acting experience).

      1. this girl’s singing is just mediocre plus the song isn’t even good.

      2. Don’t you think that if the song wasn’t good, why would it be popular worldwide?

    2. AGREE…….I dont even know what the youngster are singing nowadays

    3. no singers, no actors/actresses and no good scripts in hk anymore

speaking out songs – i don’t even know what they are singing now days.

  1. I really don’t understand why they give out so many awards

    1. Maybe they wish to “convince” the audience that these ppl could sing.

      1. Tess
Have you ever heard some of these singers sing live?

There are some singers here who can definitely sing and deserves their awards.

    2. Yup, it’s actually quite ironic.  Back in the old days, when JSG only awarded 10 gold song awards,  there were too many great songs and not enough awards to go around – now, there are barely any good songs deserving of an award, yet they choose to award 20 gold song awards….talk about an upside down system!

JSG is becoming more and more of a joke!  No wonder the ratings for the show were so poor (average 14 points, dipping all the way to 12 points – lowest ratings ever for this show). Looks like most audiences don’t care about JSG anymore (since it has gotten so ridiculous) and don’t even bother to watch the show (even the artists themselves don’t even bother showing up anymore).  For those of us who grew up with JSG, it’s actually quite sad….personally, I prefer that TVB do some damage control and end this award show before they tarnish its reputation even further (but of course, that’s wishful thinking, since we all know it’s never going to happen…..).

      1. agree, not only the songs are bad now but also the singers are not the class of the stars from ’80 and’90. i feel very lucky that i have experienced the golden era of cantopop, after the death of the icons leslie, anita, roman, cantopop is literally death, nobody can continue the legacy they left behind. rewatch the jsg-award of 1985 and compare it to jsg-award 2015 then you will see how deep cantopop has sunk.

      2. “Chok” winning the once-coveted Gold Song of the Years was the final dagger to the heart of the HK music industry. Please don’t let it happen again.

  2. If I am Joey yung I think I would be embarrass to receive the award. Every year it’s her not because she is that good but there is no more female singer in HK.

    1. They could have given it to miriam yeung, ivana wong, Kay tse, fiona sit etc

      1. Joey is obedient and easy to control. Give her the award and continue to milk as much as you can from her popularity before she gets married, has children, realize she’s a complete puppet. Miriam is married with children, outspoken and difficult to control so she’s not worth the effort. Ivana, Kay and Fiona…who are they? Not worth the award either I guess.

  3. I thought there were only 10 Gold song awards, now it is 20??
    This is really quite embarrassing

    1. TVB got rid of most of their award categories last year. There use to be best duet, mandarin song, commercial song, singer-songwriter, Asia Pacific, etc. Guess they felt handing out 28 awards would be too little.

  4. If there’s ever a time to consolidate the four HK music award ceremonies it is now. It seems like there is at least one record company that is not on good terms with one of the award organizers. It can only help the industry.

    1. Totally agree with you, but unfortunately, given how the HK music industry works, it’s never going to happen because it would mean the TV and radio stations lose their ‘bargaining chip’ with the record companies (and the record companies lose the ‘perks’ that they enjoy with the current system).  Also, the argument of who would be the main organizer (meaning who would have the power to call all the shots) is something that the TV and radio stations would never be able to come to terms with — we already saw a glimpse of this several years ago when this very topic (consolidating the awards) was brought up and the TV / radio stations even had meetings to discuss it, but none of them were willing to relinquish control (and the ‘talks’ went absolutely nowhere).

I think we’ve already seen with the whole TV licensing fiasco that what is ‘best for the industry’ doesn’t matter in the face of personal gain (whether that ‘gain’ is power, control, money, face, etc.).  The TV and radio stations in HK don’t give a damn whether the music industry is in shambles or not – as long as they still gain something from it, they are not going to want the system changed.  The unfortunate reality is that the days of the HK music industry being able to unite together for a common good are long gone (that ‘unity’ died when several of the big name ‘influencers’ – such as Anita, Leslie, Roman, James Wong, etc. — left us and the ones who remain are either retired, nearing retirement, or are no longer as active in the music industry and are not going to waste their time rebuilding something that is going to get knocked down anyway).  It sounds pessimistic, but unfortunately, it’s the truth.

  5. It’s very amusing how every singer from EEG would get an award from TVB no matter what.

    1. Actually now you should change EEG to The Voice Entertainment (Sing Mung). Im pretty sure that in the next years, JSG will only have Sing Mung band.

    2. this awards have no meaning tvb just gives awards to everyone who have connections with tvb.they should change te name of jsg-awards to self-promotions awards or favour own sons awards.

  6. How that is the song of the year, is beyond me, one reason I guess, because it’s in a TVB series, Jade Solid TVB awards lol.

  7. I recently get to know Phil Lam he song is sooo good and 高山低谷 it’s golden. JSG Awwards have no longer anymore meaning CPOP is dying while KPOP is dominating.

    1. Agree with you on 高山低谷. I heard the song and this singer just about a week ago, and it’s definitely one of the best songs this year. I think he’s the only singer from the Big 4 Record companies that actually received awards from TVB.

Also agree with you on the JSG awards. Most singers that receive JSG awards don’t get as emotional because they know these awards are easy to get if you are not from the Big 4.

    2. To me kpop is worse than coop. Most Korean singers can’t even sing live properly. They rely on auto tune and loud backup singing/music to cover up the singers voice. People like kpop so much cause the pop music style is close to America’s and the singers are all good looking dancers. At least HK singers care about their singing skills and their lyrics have deep meaning.

      1. I somewhat agree with you eventho I like Kpop. You just need the look, and be able to move around then u will become famous.

      2. If you actually listen to the lyrics, KPOP is regurgitated cliches mixed with shallow verses. HKPOP’s lyrics has always been better. Too bad, pop music is more than just music. It is the marketing, the performer’s charisma, and the audience’s taste. Most HK people don’t like HK stuff. They worship anything that is foreign. The music industry is fighting an uphill battle.

  8. Glad Hins Cheung won Most Popular Male Singer. This is his first award ever.

  9. I’m actually starting to dislike that song so overplayed in Line Walker & now it’s played way too often..

    1. I never get tired of that song. So happy that song won an award here in Canada too!

  10. JSG has not been relevant since Ah Egg and hottie Vivian Chow left the ship. TVB got arrogant, thought they were the #1 source for the listeners of Cantopop and clearly they be wrong. We will do. Ot have to listen to that horrible sound leaking from TVB. The Voice Entertainment? The fick is that? They gonna try and push that Eason Chan wannabe?

    1. Did you even watch Voice of Stars???? The creation of a TVB Music group was suggested by Eric Moo (巫啟賢) in one of the episodes. He strongly urged TVB to help these artistes to singing careers or they will waste their talent.

And some of the Voice Entertainment Group singers were praised by Jacky Cheung (张学友) saying that they got potential.

  11. Congrats Jinny but actually I will like the song as long as she doesnt sing it live.

  12. I surely miss the TOP 10 JSG of the cantonpop era 80’s and 90’s … sad to see not only the downfall of canton music but also but also once the best music awards show from back in the days.

  13. Never understood why song of the year award goes to the singer and not the composer/producer.
