Elanne Kwong To Leave Current Record Label

Elanne Kwong (江若琳) announced that she will leave her current record label Stars Shine International, the music company that has cultivated the singing careers of Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣), Joyce Cheng (鄭欣宜), and Alfred Hui (許廷鏗).

For weeks, it was rumored that Elanne’s reasons for leaving was due to a rift with Linda, Stars Shine’s current favorite solo artist. The rumors claimed that Stars Shine has neglected the promotion of their other singers by pushing all of its resources on promoting Linda, who will be releasing her third album by Stars Shine in November 2013. The company will also be investing on Linda’s upcoming photobook and first Hong Kong solo concert.

Elanne, however, has only released one album under Stars Shine since joining the label in 2011, the same year which Linda joined. Elanne’s 2012 album, Skytree <天空之樹>, was also poorly promoted. The negligence reportedly incited Elanne to pay a fee for early contract termination with Stars Shine.

The gossip further alleged that Joyce Cheng and Alfred Hui, also unsatisfied with their careers at Stars Shine, plan to leave the label when their contracts are up.

Tabloid magazines referred the Linda and Elanne rumor as “a battle for power” and compared it to a modernized version of palace drama, War and Beauty <金枝慾孽>.

Linda and Elanne’s Responses

Linda said in a recent interview that she did not feel she was receiving favoritism from Stars Shine and expressed her astonishment at the rumors. “I am very good friends with Elanne. We’re not fighting.” As for the rumors that she is fighting for power, Linda said, “It happens, but I don’t know how to do it. I just want to better myself.”

Elanne shot down these rumors on her Weibo yesterday, stating, “There’s a recent report [about me], and I must clarify it. My reasons for leaving [Stars Shine] are very clear. One – my contract has expired. It’s true. Two – after careful consideration, I’ve decided that I have a new direction to strive for. I want to thank everyone at Stars Shine for taking care of me. I am very thankful! Please do not drag Linda in the water; she is a very good friend of mines! We have both encouraged each other, and [she’s] very heartwarming. My dreams to sing have always remained with me, and I believe that one day, these dreams will come again.”

No matter how you look at it, the company’s focus was not on Ellane. Was it due to Linda and her crappy singing?
