Faye Wong to Sing “So Young” Theme Song

Rumors have been circulating around for months that the legendary Faye Wong (王菲) would lend her voice for the theme song of Vicki Zhao’s (赵薇) directorial debut, So Young <致我们终将逝去的青春>. On March 27, Faye fueled the rumors when she uploaded a photo of her in the recording studio on her official Weibo page.

The rumor was officially confirmed by Vicki herself a few hours later when she reblogged Faye’s studio photo, writing, “Allow Faye to let everyone know what a youthful song really sounds like! This is for all the unique people out there!”

So Young’s theme song is composed by the critically acclaimed mainland Chinese composer Dou Peng (窦鹏), who is best known for his music works in the films Suzhou River <苏州河>, Getting Home <落叶归根>, Design of Death <杀生>, and Thousand Year Love <云之锦>. His score in Design of Death also won Best Music at the 2012 Changchun Film Festival.

The theme’s lyrics are penned by So Young screenwriter, Li Qiang (李樯), who volunteered to helm the lyrics himself.

Faye had kept her music career in a low-profile manner in the last few years. Other than making appearances at major grand events and solo concerts, Faye remained in “semi-retirement.” It has been nearly 10 years since Faye released her last studio album and almost two years since she last sang for a motion picture theme song.

Netizens speculated that Vicki must have pulled a lot of money out of her pocket in order to convince Faye to come back, but an insider close to Faye said that Faye is not interested in the money, and that her return was to help out a good friend.

Faye’s reemergence to the music scene also sparked discussion among netizens about whether or not the legendary diva will release a new album soon. Faye made no response in regards to these assumptions, but the carefree Faye is enjoying her current lifestyle and will only release an album if she has the urge to do so.

Distributed by China Film Group, So Young stars Mark Chao (趙又廷), Han Geng (韩庚), Yang Zishan (杨子姗), and Maggie Jiang (江疏影). The movie will be released on April 26, 2013.

  1. Eithrr She doesn’t age that well or it’s the photo. Can’t believe Nicholas dated her before. Imagine if they are still dating, Nic would look like her son.

    1. She kinda resembles Jessica Hsuan in the pic above

  2. Couldn’t tell it was her, thought she look better years ago… how old is she really?

      1. Holy mother, it’s almost been 20 years since Chungking Express.

  3. She looks good at 45. That is normal. She has kids & already 45 reaching to 50. What you expect?

  4. i think she’s kept up pretty well. We just always remember her long hair, final fantasy look ..

Gosh, I hope I age well … i can’t even think of someone in the industry i want to age like …

      1. thanks dd and tammya … all listed are great examples 🙂 can’t believe none of them came to my head!

Can I also add Chingmy Yau? She’s looking awfully hawt still!

      2. Not really fair to compare them with and without makeup on. Have you seen the picture of Carina without makeup, it’s pretty on par with this one of Fayes. I think the one that actually aged the best is Cherrie Chung, since she has always gone the natural beauty route, wearing very minimal makeup.

      1. that’s true also. just watched the 2013 Raymond Wong Hotel Deluxe and thought her and Momo looked great! 🙂

Also, IMO, raymond wong beat eric tsang this year. my stomach curled when i was watching hotel deluxe.

  5. I like Faye and all, but to call her a legend is a bit over the top…I mean she got famous for doing a cover of an English song by the Cranberries(?) and dated a younfer guy, I can’t think of anything else too memorable. Anyways, it bugs me that the term “legendary” is so offen misused.

    1. she’s got a great voice and widely recognized all over Asia. I’d add her to the legend list.

I wonder if Sally Yeh would be consider a legend? Also Sandy Lam … both are my personal fave but the Legend list should be stricter … Faye will make the legend list in my opinion.

    2. The term ‘legendary’ is pretty subjective. No matter how great someone maybe in their respective fields…there will always be doubters. So I dont think the term is misused, perhaps overused would fit more.

As for faye, I can understand why people see her as a legend. Mind you, a legend in her own career, nothing to do with her personal life. If personal life is incorporated, well then no one is legendary. Somewhere in everyones life line, they probably did something, probably more than once, that would irk people. Of course, if its not exposed in the light, doesnt mean it doesnt exist or existed.

    3. I am actually not a fan of hers but even I would classified her as a legend in Cantopop.

    4. I would not call her a legend. She never really paved any roads for anyone and she has not contributed to cantopop in anyway since abandoning it in the late 90s. I don’t really see Faye as the singer to look up to.

    5. I would probably classify someone a legend as someone people will still remember and look up to after she dies..

      If you look at

      Anita Mui
      Leslie Cheung
      Teresa Tang
      Roman Lo???

I would assume most of the people on the list above are legends now..

      Jacky Cheung?
      Andy Lau?
      Tony Leung?
      Chow Yun Fat?
      Jackie Chan?

Will they become legends in the future?

      1. Jackie Chan is a legend. He is in danger of making a myth out of himself with his silly political statements.

Chow Yun Fat is a legend.

Andy.. no yet. Jacky, not yet. Tony Leung.. which one? Both not yet.

    6. Non-Chinese people only know her for the Final Fantasy song that she sang.

  6. I don’t really think there’s such thing as aging well. Fact is, we all will age. At different phases of our life, we won’t look same as the previous phase. Who doesn’t want supple skin like a baby? Collagen depletes as we age. I think some celeb look better than others because they cover up with makeup. Take the makeup off of everyone and you get their real age face. As we age, most are less concerned with their looks as well and I admire those who step out happily without a care about what others may think. With age, comes true confidence.

  7. Faye Wong is definitely legendary. She broke through the stereotypical music and gave us endless great hits which till now many people still love! These days new singers just dont have that compared to Faye Wong.
She is definitely a pop legend.

It would be great if she releases a new album! She has definitely been missed.

  8. Faye is such a COOL ICE diva who is very successful and has everything a woman can dreams of.. successful music career, movie that specially written for her with Leon, happy family with great husband & likeable children as well.. she is so rich and carefree and she decides when to make music again & not allow anyone even her management company to decide her career path… She is comparable to the Victoria Posh Beckham in terms of coolness, mystic, great husband, fashion and kids

    1. looks great on the outside but never know what’s really happening inside closed doors

  9. Wow…. what happened to her? All of a sudden… she look so old and so different!! Completely can’t recognized her!!!

  10. that looks like very successful movie makeup to make a young beauty look like their idea of what a middle aged version would look like – she reminds me of Nicole Kidman in the photo – but someone said their mom saw Wong Fay in real life and that she is BEAUTIFUL – I can’t say that about any more than two starlets I have seen with my own eyes – Yammy Lum and Chun something Yi, runner up for Miss Hong Kong with the dolly voice who married an older mustachioed filmmaker who asisted Wong Kar Wai with Grandmaster. It must be such a joy to live in Hong Kong where so many natural beauties are right there.

but I guess there is no one I really want to see with my own eyes … someone saw Tony Leung Chiu Wai with their own eyes and said that he IS devastating – I find that incomprehensible.
