G.E.M.’s Concert Prices are Higher Than Sammi Cheng

For the first half of 2015, top headlining acts have already been lined up at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Scheduled to perform in January, G.E.M.‘s (鄧紫棋) concert tickets have reportedly sold better than even Cantopop superstars, Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) and Jacky Cheung (張學友).

Known for her powerful vocals, G.E.M.’s popularity increased even further due to her participation in Mainland China reality TV program, I am a Singer: 2 <我 是歌手2>, which helped her earn millions of fans from China.

G.E.M.’s popularity led to a sharp increase in her concert ticket prices. Previously, the most expensive ticket offered was a VIP package priced at $1200 HKD, which included limited edition G.E.M. merchandise and a backstage meet-and-greet. The same VIP package now costs $1880 HKD. The prices for G.E.M.’s tickets are even more than the prices commanded by superstars from overseas.

In contrast, the most expensive tickets offered by Sammi Cheng and Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅) only cost $680 HKD.

Whether such high prices would disgruntle fans remains a question. While some diehard fans would pay any price to interact with G.E.M., others may find the price hard to swallow.

  1. Not shocked at all. She’s got a growing fan base while Sammi and Jacky have a shrinking fan base. The newer generation are not going to be jumping on the Sammi/Jacky band wagon.

There’s no disrespect, just simply a basic supply and demand logic in place.

    1. G.E.M. sings a lot better than Sammi Cheng anyway. Perhaps it is worth the price to interact with her at her concert.

      1. both have very powerful vocals but gem’s can sing many different styles of songs.

      2. Absolutely agree! Though im still a JC fan, but GEM really brings something unique to the music industry. It’s not due to chance or packaging that made her famous. She’s actually famous for her talents – much deserved!

Hmmm…sorry to say, but the person who translated this article totally missed the point.  First of all, the Jacky news is not confirmed yet – even the original Chinese article itself said that the info about Jacky holding a concert in HK  in May is “rumor” only.

Second, the original article never said that GEM’s concert tickets are more expensive than Jacky’s.  The article only mentioned her tickets being more expensive than Sammi Cheng’s concert tickets (not sure if the person who translated misinterpreted or misread the original article).    The mention about Jacky was only to say that the Hong Kong Coliseum will be busy in the first half of the year due to all the “superstars” who are reportedly holding their concerts (Jacky’s name was thrown in there because he already announced back in July that he will be doing a World Tour concert in 2015 – no dates have been confirmed yet).

    1. Me 2!! She’s not that good.
And offering VIP passes is one thing, Sammi and Miriam don’t have that so the price is 680$

    2. may i ask how she is arrogant? i dont know anything about her :/
      wha happened?

  2. What a waste of money. I wouldn’t even meet her if it was free.

  3. I don’t know about her personality but her songs are freaking good/catchy. I think she’s the new Sammi of this generation.

    1. I think GEM’s more amazing; she’s such a tiny person but she has a powerhouse of a voice. Surprises me a lot.

  4. I’m not a fan of hers, and i’m not a bias. I’m also someone who hated all these new singers nowadays in HK because they simply CANNOT sing. I’m a fan of the 70s, 80s and “early” 90s (golden era) cantopop.

But my point is her singing is better than miriam and sammi.

  5. She’s not worth even half the price. But thats life, we can all hope to get rich from idiots.

  6. Is she good? Yeah, compared to other singers in her generation. However, her remake of Beyond’s “Like You” really sucked. If whining through a song is good, then oh gawd.

    1. @CGC
I agree. I happened to watch her perform the song on TVB and was really disappointed by it. I don’t follow Gem but heard that she has a nice voice so I was kind of shocked by how much I hated her rendition. I won’t hold it against her though because, IMHO, not too many can do Beyond’s songs justice, except maybe Sandy Lam and Jacky Cheung.
