Jane Zhang Wows in “Empress of China” Soundtrack

After the much-hyped Mainland period drama The Empress of China <武媚娘傳奇> aired, its theme song, “Wu Zi Bei” <無字碑> sung by Jane Zhang (張靚穎), also rose in popularity. Jane is indubitably the reigning Queen of film and drama themesongs.

Apart from singing the robust and high-tempo theme song, Jane also contributed subtheme song “Gan Wei Tian Xia Xian” <敢為天下先> to the soundtrack of The Empress of China. Unlike the theme song, the second song is gentle and mellow.

Both songs are the result of yet another collaboration between Jane and the music industry’s power couple, composers Dong Dongdong (董冬冬) and Chen Yi (陳曦). “Gan Wei Tian Xia Xian” is meant to convey to listeners the gentle and feminine charm possessed by Empress Wu. Jane carries the song perfectly with her smooth and delicate vocals, causing listeners to feel as if they have been transported into the very palace where the imperial harem resided, filled with sensuality but also political intrigue.

“Gan Wei Tian Xia Xian” is reportedly so popular that many expect it to exceed the record 300 million hits that Jane had previously set. With many other enormously popular film and drama theme songs under her belt, Jane’s position as the top singer of theme songs will remain unchallenged for a long time to come.

  1. I’ve always been a huge fan of Jane – she’s an amazing singer…but I don’t feel like either songs for this drama really showcases her powerful ball-busting vocal chops. They’re only mehhh and not as memorable as her other drama/movie soundtracks.

As to FBB…god the more I see trailer of this drama, the more I’m convinced she’s vain as efff. She reminds me of what Charmaine looked like in her past dramas – spotless, even when she’s not supposed to be! It’s just too…sterile. No wonder they call FBB a vase.

    1. FBB is sterile looking in all her movies…over perfect, not a hair out of place. In a couple of quick shots in the trailer, she was actually smiling/laughing….and she does look pretty and her face was ‘unfrozen’ for that moment.

Wardrobe dept, imo, has overspent the $$$. Lavish, beautiful, stunning…all yes but over-the-top (just like Curse of the Golden Flowers).

Never watched Aarif in any movies before so I cannot comment about his acting skills but I reckon he’s a little ‘young’ for this role.

The first theme song has a nice tune to it. The second sounds boring.

      1. Cosign on that! When she actually has emotions on her face, I can see some humanity, but otherwise…a pretty vase.

  2. The two songs were ok, nothing amazing. I watched 1 episode and got bored, it’s nothing new… Even the main character has the same character as every other main character of these type of drama, that it’s not entertaining to watch. And the male leads, none of them are eye candy -.- not to me, so yea, boring overhyped series.

    1. The male leads (or Aarif Lee at least) look too feminine I reckon. But I guess Asians do find that sort of thing attractive.

      1. Haha Aarif reminds me of Wang Lee Hom, except more masculine and proportional. He looks way too western to play this role IMO.

  3. 300 mil hit on what? Youtube? The first song barely only has almost 150k, thatwas 2, 3 weeks ago. The second song a littile over 8k…Both songs are pretty similar imo. I don’t feel as granf and as great as the article say. They’re pretty song and she has the songing chop, no denying it. It’s a littlw hyped. ..
