Kevin Cheng to Rest More Next Year

Since Kevin Cheng’s (鄭嘉穎) popularity surged in 2011, the 44-year-old never had a single day of rest. Shooting approximately five television dramas per year, Kevin also had to save up free time to record his comeback album, which was officially released on November 13 by EEG. The EP, It’s a Long Story <說來話長>, consists of five Mandarin tracks, all of which were recorded in a single month.

At a press conference in Guangzhou to promote the EP, Kevin announced that he hopes to work less next year. He said, “I wasn’t living my life in the past two years. I was shooting four to five dramas per year, and I spent 11 months a year in the studios. Next year, I will return to TVB to shoot a drama. Other than that, I will lessen my work schedule. I want to live my life again.”

Prepared for Marriage

Love is the theme of Kevin’s EP. The promotional track “The Regret of Happiness” <幸福的遺憾> speaks about the unfortunate experience of meeting the right person at the wrong time. Kevin revealed that the song was inspired by his own past. He said, “When I was younger, I had no career and no money, but I met a girl. We were two people who were right for each other, but met at the wrong time.”

Asked if the woman he mentioned was ex-girlfriend Linda Wong (王馨平), Kevin immediately clarified, “Do not make these assumptions. She is living a very happy life right now. Please do not affect her.” Kevin insisted that he is still good friends with all of his ex-girlfriends.

Regarding the relationship between his Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步惊心> costars, Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) and Cecilia Liu (刘诗诗), Kevin expressed his happiness and blessed the couple. “I really hope everyone can give them space. We are living in a time when secrets can no longer be kept. We all have mobile phones; we can take photos and put them up online. It’s impossible to hide them.”

He added that if he was in a relationship, he would definitely announce it publicly. “But please don’t bother my kids. There is a bottom line. Kids need to be protected.”

Does Kevin envy his Bu Bu Jing Xin costars? Kevin laughed and expressed his desire for a family. “I can see myself having a family and with kids,” said Kevin with a smile. “I am prepared for it, but I don’t know if the other person is. If I do have kids, I will lessen my work even more. I don’t want my children to lack a father’s love. I want to watch them grow.”

EP Release was a “Selfish” Wish

It has been 15 years since Kevin last released a musical album. Though Kevin is best known for his television drama performances, it was music that brought him to the industry. Kevin debuted as a PolyGram artist in 1993, but within two years, Kevin was dropped from the label and had to relaunch his career in Taiwan. Kevin has mentioned that his time in Taiwan had been one of the lowest points of his life.

“My childhood was too fortunate. I didn’t have to do much to debut in this industry either. I wasn’t prepared for what was to come. But I am glad to have experienced what I experienced. If I didn’t, my career wouldn’t have been this smooth in recent years.”

Despite his busy schedule, Kevin insisted to sign with Hong Kong’s EEG and release a new album. “I have a few representative works in drama, but none in music. It’s regrettable. Through It’s a Long Story, I really want to find my own representative musical work.”

  1. awww i hope he gets some rest!!! i’ve been supporting kevin for a long time and so glad to see him so successful both in HK and China and have a ton of jobs and opportunities, but please remember to take care of yourself!!! you’re still as handsome as ever, but if you keep it up, it’s going to catch up to you.

  2. heard he’s coming back to film a series with tavia next year!! REALLY looking forward to it, since they havent collaborated in a LONG time!!!!

loved them in afos eventhoug tavia was only a guest star…..

    1. Me too and it is great that they all seem so close and supportive of one and other.

  3. Isn’t it more relaxing in mainland work less hours a day and get paid more

    1. It is just lesser work compared to HK, but still a lot of work as you know they work a lot more in HK and get paid less which is why many want to film for China in hopes of higher pay.

I have always supported Kevin and am glad that he has released an EP since I have not heard him sing for many years. It was truly music that made him enter the industry. The first time I saw him act was in JDSJ 1999 and I enjoyed his acting and glad that his acting is what made him successful but it is great to know that he still remembers his passion for singing.

  4. Good that he take a good break next year and hopefully during his break he can find his true love haha

  5. Indeed,I also agree with your sentiments, Hannahh. Kevin works much too hard and is still going about in the Mainland promoting his EP. I hope he is finally successful in this attempt to make his fans interested in his singing.
