Music Album Review: “Girl’s Talk” by Dream Girls
by Dream Girls
Released by Linfair Records on December 7, 2012
Managed by Taiwan’s Dorian International Entertainment, Dream Girls is a pop group trio that consists of model-actresses, Tia Li (李毓芬), Puff Kuo (郭雪芙), and Emily Song (宋米秦). The group’s leader, Emily, was already an established model from Korea by the time she debuted with Dream Girls. She is also the group’s lead vocalist. Models they may be, but don’t let that affect your perspective towards this group’s talents!
As all three members came from modeling backgrounds, I once questioned this group’s singing abilities. All those assumptions flew out the window after listening to Girl’s Talk.
The EP starts off with an emotionally-drenching R&B ballad, “Dying for Love.” The girls sing with great clarity and rhythm. I did not catch Emily’s Korean accent until I listened to the songs a second time. The girls also harmonize very well. Live performances of this single also do not disappoint.
The EP’s second track, “Don’t Stop the Music,” is mediocre at best. I am a fan of upbeat music, but somehow, “Don’t Stop the Music” just doesn’t do it for me. The music arrangement is somewhat messy, especially at the chorus.
A pop group cannot be considered a pop group if they don’t have a bubblegum pop song! The third track, “Because You’re Here” <因為有妳在> is definitely the song that all bubblegum pop lovers will enjoy! With the heavy beat and the sensual harmonization, there is a tint of maturity in the song. Nonetheless, I find myself humming happily to the melody as I listen to the song, especially the chorus!
The last two remaining tracks in the EP, “Love Microwave” <愛情微波爐> and “Letting You Go” <讓你走> are soft ballads. The first with a heavier beat, the latter with a heavy acoustic focus. Both ballads successfully showcase the girls’ vocal abilities. I was a bit disappointed that “Letting You Go” does not feature more harmonization of the girls’ voices, but it is still a very soothing ballad to listen to.
I am very happy that I came across this group, because I am absolutely loving the music that they are putting out so far. Well done, Dream Girls!
