Nicky Wu Reveals Second Theme Song of “Severe Winter”

Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) revealed the second theme song for his self-produced spy drama Severe Winter <寒冬>. The drama stars Nicky as the historical figure Deng Zihua, an agent who worked for an anti-Japanese activist group. Severe Winter is slated to premiere simultaneously on the four big Satellite TV channels of Shandong, Anhui, Guizhou, Hebei.

The first song “Snowy Night” <雪夜> premiered in August, featuring Nicky’s vocals. The second theme song, also titled “Severe Winter”, is a duet performed by both Nicky and  Yan Yidan (嚴藝丹).  Both songs are written by singer-songwriter Yan Yidan, who made her explosive debut in 2011 when she wrote and performed the ending theme song “Three Inches of Heaven” <三寸天堂> for the popular series Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心>.

Yan Yidan said she was thrilled for the opportunity to work with Nicky and is honored to be given the opportunity to write music for Severe Winter. Nicky has said that his role in Severe Winter is his most touching role to date, and Yidan finds it challenging but rewarding at the same time to be able to compose a piece about the character.

Before writing the song, Yidan studied the script carefully and referred back to revolutionary songs she has heard when she was a child, such as the Russian songs “Katyusha” and “Moscow Nights”. Yidan also visited the set to find more inspiration.

  1. I’ve been looking forward to this drama (which I know is going to have suspense). The second theme song/duet is very well done, nice tune and really reflect that era . Their voices harmonised very well by having the right ‘key “.

However I would prefer Nicky to start off on a slightly higher key for the original theme song. His voice is not suitable to sing such low notes and it makes him sound off-key (a similar mistake in one of BBJQ’s song)

I totally agree with you on this. He should have started it on a higher note on the 1st song. The duet song their voices blended very well together.

  3. Nicky sounds like he has a cold in Snowy Night…but in Severe Winter he sounds like his normal voice
