TVB Scraps “The Voice of the Stars 2” Due to Mainland Competition

When auditions for the second season of The Voice of the Stars <星夢傳奇> were announced in April, over 200 TVB artistes went to audition for the singing competition in hopes to become the next Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘). Last year’s The Voice of the Stars, a singing competition for established artistes, brought fame to 30-year-old Fred Cheng, who has been named as one of 2013’s biggest stars.

However, in light of the competition TVB will face from the third season of The Voice of China <中國好聲音>, which has been holding recruitment in Hong Kong, TVB decided to indefinitely halt production for The Voice of the Stars 2. Many TVB artistes who have cleared their schedules to audition for The Voice of the Stars 2, including Sheldon Lo (羅孝勇), Penny Chan (陳國峰), Ng Yip Kwan (吳業坤), Adrian Chau (周志康), and Daniel Chau (周志文), have no choice but to temporarily hold their projects and wait for further notification.

The Voice of China 3 will be a co-production between mainland China’s Zhejiang TV and Hong Kong’s Now TV, TVB’s rival station. A TVB insider revealed that many third and fourth-line TVB artistes have auditioned for The Voice of the Stars 2, but due to tough competition from The Voice of China, TVB decided that it would be better to bring back The Voice <超級巨聲>, a singing competition for aspiring singers instead of already established artistes.

Penny Chan, who made his debut in the industry through The Voice 2 in 2010, admitted that he auditioned for The Voice of the Stars 2. He said, “We’re still waiting for our results. I think it’s going to be an indefinite wait. We don’t even know if the program’s going to happen. There’s too much going on.”

  1. Why are they auditioning again when they were from The Voice?

  2. Really like Voice of the Star. Disappointing news!
It was one of the few good show.

  3. They should exclude the singers from the voice since they already competed, this is replication. I like the voice of stars from last year but the “2” sounds so disappointing. Can’t TVB comes up with better and newer ideas?

  4. doesn’t sheldon lo already have a record company contract? isn’t he set to release an album? why does he get to audition for the voice of stars 2?

  5. I agreed. Since they have already done their singing competition therefore they shouldn’t allow to compete again.

  6. The Voice is for the public, the Voice of the Stars is for TVB artists. I actually think TVB should keep the Voice of the Stars, it is a very different feel because you already know and love the artists. However, this is showcasing them in a different light, which made Fred so popular. People already knew him from TVB dramas, but no one knew he could sing like that.

    1. yeah…i thought that Fred would able to sing like that i didn’t even know….<3 but good on him that last year he won to be the winner!!!! 🙂

    1. Because Sheldon cannot make his name out so he has to try his luck once again in a competition for established stars. Some from The Voice but has good career such as Alfred, Jay Fung, Hurbert Hu does not need to come back to competition due to that reason.

  7. Thank god they’ve cancel the show if those are the ‘stars’.

  8. Good decision, I wouldn’t want to watch the same people again.

  9. You tryna compete with the talent in China? Have people watched The Voice Of China before? Most average competitor from China can sing better than all the artist put together in HK. Scrapping this show is common sense!

  10. They should replace it with show about the United States Monarchy. This family is awesome. It’s like my friend Winnie says, “There’s the Beckham’s, the Pitts, and The United States Monarchy.”

  11. United States Monarchy is incredible…I love them…would love to see a show about them. It would be like having our own Kardashian’s except soooooo much cuter!!!
