Crystal Liu Takes On Another Fox Goddess

Eternal Love, the TV adaptation of the novel Three Lives, Three Worlds <三生三世十里桃花>, was a record hit in China, putting the nation in obsession with the tragic love story between a fox goddess and her crown prince. But the same can’t be said for its movie adaptation Once Upon a Time—and though the movie featured China’s hottest young stars Crystal Liu Yifei (刘亦菲) and Yang Yang (杨洋), the movie failed to win critics and viewers. With a lifetime gross of only 530 million RMB, it barely made a profit from its 150 million RMB budget.

Once Upon a Time only adds to the string of box office disappointments that Crystal has been going through in the last few years. Films like The Four <四大名捕>, For Love or Money <露水红颜>, and Never Gone <致青春2:原来你还在这里> all failed to earn back estimated costs. Once Upon a Time, despite its favorable release period, was plagued with negative reviews that had affected its box office performance.

Nonetheless, Crystal may have a chance to reverse her “box office poison” with the upcoming Hanson and the Beast <二代妖精>, a comedy film that also stars William Feng Shaofeng (冯绍峰). In the film, Crystal plays the fox demon Bai Xianchu, who arrives to the realm of mortals (earth) to repay a debt of gratitude. She ends up falling in love with a mortal (William).

Hanson and the Beast is not Crystal and William’s first collaboration. The successful young actors had starred in 2011’s White Vengeance <鸿门宴>, playing husband and wife.

The film comes out December 29, 2017.
