2013 TVB Anniversary Awards: Best Actor and Best Actress Nominations Leaked

While the official nominations for this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards <萬千星輝頒獎典禮> will not be unveiled until November 29, Hong Kong media leaked a partial list on November 27, revealing the artists eligible to compete for TV King and TV Queen.

The two categories consist of fifteen candidates each. As expected, this year’s most talked-about stars are all in the running, along with a few surprises. Singer Ivana Wong (王菀之) made the Best Actress list for her TVB acting debut in Inbound Troubles <老表,你好嘢!>. Fala Chen (陳法拉) is also included despite the fact that she has already left the company. Following her win at the TVB Anniversary Gala, Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) can now claim to be an official TV Queen nominee for her performance in Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>. Actresses from TVB’s golden days, Esther Kwan (關詠荷), Kathy Chow (周海媚), Christine Ng (伍詠薇), and Ada Choi (蔡少芬), took their places as heavyweight contenders, although the outspoken Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) is visibly absent.

The nominations for Best Actor also do not disappoint. Both Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) and Chilam Cheung (張智霖) are acknowledged for their effort in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄Ⅱ>, while Dayo Wong (黃子華) joins the fray with his long-awaited comeback Bounty Lady <My盛Lady>. Leading men from TVB’s three major year-end productions are also on the list. The most unexpected is likely veteran actor Lau Dan’s (劉丹) nomination for his portrayal of the stern but loving head of household Ma Fu in the popular sitcom Come Home Love <愛.回家>.

As a response to last year’s criticism, TVB will determine its TV King and TV Queen using both public votes and a professional judging panel. While some of the award hopefuls are generating a lot of noise, their fate is yet uncertain as evidenced by the results from the Anniversary Gala. The final battle will take place on December 16, and it may be one of the most exciting yet given the caliber of this year’s nominees.

  1. I have a feeling that most of the actors/actresses on the list are nominated just to hope they will attend the award ceremony and not to actually give them the award… Like joey meng, esther kwan, francis, chilam,…

    Anyone same thoughts?

    1. they do know that they do not have a high chance but attending it its still alright.

    1. Yeah, Aimee Chan being nominated for slow boat home but no Sheren Tang? This must be a joke? But then again, TVB is a joke! Aimee should not have been nominated for the last steep of ascent last year too.
I thought Fala Chen is better in Will power, she was horrible in TITS2.

      1. Agreed. I stopped watching slow boat home partially because of Aimee Chan.

      2. Aimee was beyond terrible in SBH, worse than Selena Li even. Her acting seems to have gotten worse just when i saw a glimmer of hope in The Last Steep Ascent.

    2. this is ridiculous…..i mean, out of all of TVB’s talented actresses they chose to nominate aimee? Man, she’s preggas right now, so if she really went to the ceremony next month she’ll probs end up giving birth there……..

maybe that was what TVB wanted – surprises

  2. TVB is alwiz suck.. I switch to mainland / taiwan / korea drama due to poor quality and illogical plot.

    1. I’m with you KW. I watch more mainland and Japanese drama. Still can’t stand Korean drama, a bit too melodramatic for me.

  3. B.Actor : Ruco Chan ( most deserved ) / Chi Lam ( acting was good but not alot of ppl can see it cause he’s acting was always good so to them no difference) ,

B.Actress : Kate, Kristal ( can act as the role given to her, somehow fits her. )

  4. Ruco’s name has consistently appeared here and elsewhere on this forum whenever there’s a discussion about who deserves the best actor award. He’s easily the most deserving of the current batch of TVB siu sangs, especially in the roles of Sam Sir and Summer Ha this year. I can’t think of anyone else who can play Sam Sir. It’s a role that’s not only physically challenging with most of the action scenes undertaken by him personally but also one which calls for a wide range of emotions as we follow Sam through the ups and downs in his life. Ruco should win but knowing TVB, they’ll give the award to someone less deserving cos “he’ll have to wait for his turn”.

    1. You took the words right out of my mouth. Sad but true, Ruco is brilliant in both Reality Check and Brother’s Keeper but TVB will not give him the recognition, probably he can’t even make it to the top five.

  5. Ruco definitely deserves Best actor this year but unfortunately, he probably won’t get it because of bias from TVB management

    1. Maybe ruco is overqualified for the award like what some people were saying about some over actors ruco doesn’t need to award to prove his a good actor and ruco doesn’t need the award to prove his one of the best actors ruco won’t get it because his not a favorite among the management group

      1. Who doesn’t need an award from TVB? Wayne Lai is a veteran, and he only got moved up after getting his BAS, and then 3 BA afterwards.

      2. Ruco doesn’t need the award to prove his one of the BA in tvb but the award will help his career go up

      3. Ruco’s acting already proven without awards, but he needs that award to recognize his talents worth and move him up for more market value and more opportunities.

  6. I’d vote Joey Meng for best actress..she was outstanding in ‘A Change of Heart’. As for best actors, a lot of them are really good but b/c of the poor development of characters, it limit them to go beyond their acting level. So this is kind of a toss up for me. But personally, I’d love to see one of the veterans get the award(the ones who have not won yet).

  7. my wishlist for the year is Joey Meng for Best Actress and Francis Ng for Best Actor.

  8. Ruco for best actor!! Kristal or Joey Meng for bst actress. they both deserve it!

  9. Tavia won’t win Best Actress this year but might win Fav Character…I hope Ma Ming or Ruco wins Best Actor and Kristal/Myolie (NOT LINDA) wins Best Actress. Chilam’s character isn’t BA quality, it’s more favourite character.

    1. A character is of course not BA quality, because BA is about acting, not character.

  10. I think Kate Tsui will win Best Actress based on the current high viewership ratings on MyTV. They are really high just after the airing of 3 episodes.

Kristal Tin won’t get it. She is not the promoted fadan of TVB.

    1. She is now. She replaces Fala’s position, and joins the current fadans Tavia, Myolie, KAte, and Linda.

She is now in the front row in many TVB important events such as the Aniversary Gala and Sale Presentation

      1. In fact, TVB is planning to give TV Queen award to either Linda Chung or Kate Tsui, depending on the response (viewership ratings and comments) from the public. Since Linda’s acting in “Brother’ Keeper” was not highly complimented nor Kate’s acting in “Snipers Standoff”, TVB had to push the airing of “My Prime Lady” forward to just before the Awards Ceremony. It is ob obvious.

  11. I thought the list was already released by TVB. I just saw a segment about it on the Scoop.

  12. Why is TVB always so behind? I felt Kenneth deserved BA more last year, but his hype seems to be greater this year. I hope Ruco wins it this year 🙁 rather than possibly being hyped next year.

And i support Joey Meng for Best actress! And Tavia is doing well in On call II too…

    1. I just caught up on the Hippocratic crush 2. With the exception of the first 2 episodes and the overuse of “no face angel”, I actually enjoy the series. I agree with sweetmisery that Tavia is doing well, she’s good actually. The new girl Tracy Chu is quite good for her first series. So much better than Christine Kuo and I think she’s better than Eliza too!

      1. I agree! Tracy Chu is doing a lot better than those heavily promoted newcomers.

  13. hope Kenneth Ma wins Best Actor! i like his acting in Trimph in the Skies 2 and his acting in other dramas are great too in the recent years.

    1. So he should win best supporting actor for TITS 2.

For On Call 2, his acting is not as good as On Call 1 + he & Tavia have little screen times.

  14. i also feel Chilam Cheung also deserves it for his acting in Triumph 2 . It feels pretty hard to choose a Best Actor this year!

  15. Sharon Chan and Selena Li didn’t get a nomination for Best Actress.

      1. She should be nominated in stead of Amie Chan in Slow Home Boat

    1. May Chan should’ve been nominated for Bounty Lady. She’s amazing in BL.

  16. Anyone realized Natalie Tong isn’t nominated at all? She was great in Bullet Brain and should at least nominated as BSA

  17. BA. ^^
Francis is more deserved in TITS2
Law is more deserved in HC2
    LauDan ^^ support him
I think Roger and Michael Miu is also pretty good.
Wayne lai definitely in it for Will power???

    Always root for
    Kristal Tin
    Joey Meng ^^
    Fala Chen
Anyone know the girl act :”> in love come home that in love with John Ma???
So far im not very impressed with many but these are people i like from their series

  18. Esther Kwan for Best Actress.
Elena Kong for Best Supporting Actress.

  19. Fala Chen left TVB, she’s still nominated; and Maggie Cheung Ho Yee was not nominated last year. TVB is so unprofessional.

    1. You should say “inconsistent” (instead of unprofessional). Perhaps Fala Chen has not decided to choose her path yet, at least not HKTV or NowTV yet. Otherwise her name would not even be shown in any lists.

      1. Fala Chen still keeps her relationship with Txb while Maggie burned the bridge between them.

  20. By putting those veterans and experiences actors in the nomination lists just for a show off but do not nominate them I find tvb has no standard….if all these veterans and good artists have a chance taking home the BA awards that will be a nice showcase to watch.

  21. Looking thru all the comments here, it’s pretty obvious that many readers feel that Ruco deserves to win over Kenneth. These do not appear to be only from die-hard fans of Ruco but from people who know how to appreciate good acting. On the other hand, comments concerning Kenneth mostly say that he’s likely to win but doesn’t deserve it(other than multiple posts from a certain person supporting him). Even if Ruco doesn’t win BA this year, seeing all the support for him is already a win in itself for him. Rooting for Ruco all the way.

      1. to those who gets to vote, i really hope you vote for who YOU think deserved it not who you like. im not saying you cant vote for who you like but if you want its up to you. everyone has their own decision.

    1. You must understand life. This is life. No matter how good ruco’s acting, he also wont have any chance to get Best Actor at least for the next 10 years. Too far future i not dare to predict but at this moment no way! Example Justin LO, he is a great singer and sing better than many singers. But yet he wont be getting any most popular singer award. This is life of him. So he must accept it. Life is not about 1+1=2. Not means you good at it then you can get the awards. There are many others variations to considered with. That’s why you are not a millionaire ^^

    2. I hope Ruco and the TVB management gets to read all these positive comments about him. Ruco needs to be encouraged all the way.

  22. what the hell is Mandy Wong nominated for her role in On Call 2 instead of Always & Ever.

her performance in Always & Ever is good because I really hate that evil character.

Her screen time in On Call 2 is little. I am up set with On Call 2 because the casts from part 1 has little screen time. I am sick of watching Eliza Sam, Tracy Chu, and Ko Ming Wa.

  23. We all know TVB won’t give the award to Francis Ng and his Sam Gor character is already legendary anyway. And Dayo Wong’s already Best Actor with or without the award so he doesn’t need it. Most deserving would be Ruco Chan.

As for Best Actress, Kristal Tin HANDS DOWN.

  24. Ruco > Kenneth for most dramas (:
I hope voice of stars win the best variety show award! 😛

  25. chi lam is a good actor his performance in the series with gallen and adam was awesome and his acting skills of course is way better these days

      1. Easy. If you watched Always and Ever, you’ll know why. Her performance was amazing!!!

  26. I will vote for Francis or Chilam if he was in TVB but he isn’t, so it feels like TVB is just doing this for the sake of continuing the partnership. But they acted well, so both are still deserving of an award.

On call II roles are sort of plainer, but I will commend Kenneth Ma’s acting 🙂
