2016 TVB Anniversary Award: Ruco Chan, Vincent Wong, Tracy Chu Lead with 4 Nods

The nominees for the 2016 TVB Anniversary Awards were announced on Friday afternoon, December 1, in a press conference held at TVB Studios. The event was MC’ed by Luk Ho-ming (陸浩明), with the attendance of nearly a hundred TVB artists.

This year, the broadcaster will be handing out seventeen trophies, among them being the newly-established Most Popular Onscreen Partnership award. Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Vincent Wong (王浩信), and Tracy Chu (朱千雪) each lead with nominations in four categories, a head-start in the race.

The Lifetime Achievement Award and the Professional Actors Award will be selected by a professional judging panel. Winners of the remaining fifteen awards will be selected by two different voting teams—one which combines popular online votes with TVB’s judging panel, and another that tabulates ballots from the judging panel and TVB’s own artists.

  1. I’m still not over Over Run Over. Best drama for me to date! (Haven’t seen Dead Wrong though.)

Also quite liked most of the characters in Short End of the Stick. If only they had a best partnership team award.

Hope best supporting actor will go to Carlo Ng.

I assume most people will vote for Ruco/Nancy in A Fist Within Four Walls as best actor/actress. Impact-wise, I still don’t think their characters are as heart-rending as Vincent & Tracy, so I will not be voting for them. My votes go to Tracy & Vincent! #Biased #ORO FTW!

    1. @coralie Actually they are nominated!

      Most Popular Onscreen Partnership
      1. Wayne Lai, Edwin Siu, Raymond Cho, and Power Chan — “Short End of the Stick”

  2. it’s WONDERFUL not to see chatterbox’s name in most improved female artiste.
    My vote:
Joyce Tang and Koni Lui – Most Popular Onscreen Partnership

Philip Ng – Best Supporting Actor
Joyce Tang – Best Supporting Actress
Grace Wong as Fa Man – Most Popular Female Character
Bosco Wong as Sheldon Chun – Most Popular Male Character
    Ruco Chan – Best Actor
    Teresa Mo- Best Actress

      1. @linvin8 omg, last year chatterbox got most improved and this year nominated for best actress….FAINT!!! in what way has she proven herself? who put her name in the list???

  3. My pick! All for fun!

    Best Actor – Roger
    Best Actress – Maggie
Most Popular Male Character – Bobby
Most Popular Female Character – Joyce
    Best Supporting Actor – Carlo
    Best Supporting Actress – Joyce
Most Improve Male – don’t care.
    Most Improved Female – Moon
Most popular Partnership – Short end of the stick group.

  4. Thought Benjamin and Sisley would be in the Most Improved category but they are in the Best Actor/Actress category instead. Not the usual TVB practice. And happy that they finally put Most Popular Onscreen Partnership back.

    Prediction (vs Preference):
    Best Actor – Roger/Ruco (Roger/Bobby/Liu Kai-chi)
    Best Actress – Nancy (Maggie)
Most Popular Male Character – Ruco/Bobby (Bobby)
    Most Popular Female Character – Nancy/Joyce (Joyce/Rosina)
    Best Supporting Actor – Raymond/Hugo (John Chiang/Raymond/Carlo)
Best Supporting Actress – Joyce (Joyce)
Most Improved Male Artist – not familiar
Most Improved Female Artist – Ali (Stephanie/Tracy)
Most Popular Onscreen Partnership – Vincent Wong and Tracy Chu “Over Run Over”/Joyce Tang and Koni Lui “House of Spirit”/Ruco Chan and Benjamin Yuen “A Fist Within Four Walls” (Short End of the Stick”)

  5. I like to have
    Best Actor – Bobby Au
    Best Actress- Maggie Shiu
Most popular Male- Ruco vs Vincent
Most popular Female-Nancy vs Grace Wong
    Best Supporting Actor-Hugo Ng
    Best Supporting Actress-Rosina
    Most Improve Actor-Jonathan
    Most Improve Actress-Katy Kung
Most popular Onscreen-Wayne, Edwin, Raymond & Power
Best Drama – House of Spirit

  6. Pretty much the only categories I care about this year are TV King (Uncle Chi has my vote, though I would also be happy if Roger won), Most Improved Male Artist (definitely Jonathan Cheung), and Best Supporting Actor (tough choice, as there are some solid actors in this category, but if I had to choose, mostly likely either Raymond or Hugo). Good to see that TVB brought back the Best Onscreen Partners award, though whether this going to be another one of those ‘one-time’ categories again remains to be seen. They should bring back the Best Villain award too (that was one of my favorite categories). I’m also curious who they are going to give the Lifetime Achievement award to this year – it better be someone more deserving than who they gave it to last year!!

  7. My predictions from past years situations and my own judgment.

    Best Actor: Ruco
    Best Actress: Nancy
    Male character: Benjamin
    Female Character: Grace Wong
    Supporting Actor: Raymond Cho
    Supporting Actress: Joyce Tang
Best Drama: Fist within walls – guaranteed win

    OR

    Best Actor/male character: Ruco
    Best Actress/female character: Nancy
    Supporting Actor: Raymond Cho
    Supporting Actress: Grace Wong

Note: if nancy wins female character as well, she will be the second person after Tavia to have won awards in all categories for a actress plus her almost guarantee win for Best actress will give her double straight win. Making history this year.

This year is similar to 2011 for Kevin and Myolie in Ghetto Justice. There really isn’t other choices because if we judge popularity or acting wise its Nancy and Ruco. The song and series is a sure win as well.
Supporting actress should be Joyce or Grace. Its safe to think that Grace Wong will get an award this year, but it’ll be sad to see Joyce not getting something so mabey its evenly split. Since Jonathan Cheung is popular and did well acting wise so it’ll be a historical moment if he can win most improved and supporting actor award. No one has done that and TVB should arrange this because he’s deserving for this.

  8. My picks would be:

    Best Actor – Ruco Chan
    Best Actress – Nancy Wu
Most Favourite Male Character – Vincent Wong (although a personal favourite would be Louis Cheung as Tim Yau in TSFH)
Most Favourite Female Character – Grace Wong/Tracy Chu
Best Supporting Actor – Raymond Cho/6-Wing
Best Supporting Actress – Grace Wong/Joyce Tang
Most Improved Actor – Jonathan Cheung
Most Improved Actress – Moon Lau
    Most Popular Onscreen Partnership
Wayne Lai, Edwin Siu, Raymond Cho, and Power Chan — “Short End of the Stick”/Vincent Wong and Tracy Chu — “Over Run Over”

  9. TVB’s going to do whatever it wants, but my personal picks

    Best Actor: Roger Kwok
Best Actress: Maggie Shiu or Teresa Mo
Male Character: Bobby Au Yeung or Vincent Wong
    Female Character: Joyce Tang
    Best Supporting Actor: Raymond Cho
Best Supporting Actress: Joyce Tang or Akina Hong
Improved Actor: Moon Lau or Ali Lee
    Improved Actress: Jonathan Cheung
Onscreen Partnership: Wayne Lai, Edwin Siu, Raymond Cho, and Power Chan
    Best Series: House of Spirits

For Lifetime Achievement, I hope veteran Bowie Wu gets it.

Benjamin Yuen in Best Actor and Grace Chan in Best Actress category are both laughable.

Ruco and Nancy will probably get something, since there’s so much hype… If he doesn’t get BA this year, Ruco probably won’t get it next year since quite a bit of veterans are coming back in some already pre-hyped series.

  10. Favorite Actor: Ruco or Bobby
Favorite Actress: Alice, Maggie or Joyce
Most Popular Male Character: Vincent, Raymond Cho or Bosco
Most Popular Female Character: Natalie, Grace Wong or Mandy
Best Supporting Actor: Power, Matt, Or Joel.
Best Supporting Actress: Jade, Akina or Florence
    Most Improved Actor: Jonathan
Most Improved Actress: Moon, Ali or Tracy
Best series: A Fist Within Four Walls, House Of Spirits or Brother’s Keeper 2

  11. My picks for the following main categories:

Best Actor: Roger, Bobby, Ruco, Vincent
(Initially i thought that Vincent will not have the chance to win in this category although i personally like him in EU. But seems like he’s 1 of the hot favourites & even Roger Kwok said that his vote goes to Vincent, so he may stand a chance)

    Best Actress: Maggie, Nancy, Kristal
(I totally forgot about Maggie. Yes…she is 1 of the solid actress & it is her high time to be awarded. Although i know Nancy is good in her acting and is popular for this category, but i still cannot accept if she win the title for 2 consecutive years quite easily. So perhaps give it to Maggie who deserves the award too)

Best Drama: A Fist Within Four Walls vs House of Spirits
(I personally like Law Disorder too, but i don’t think it can compete with the above two very well-received dramas this year…which i also like. Anyway, hope Alex Fong & Uncle Liu KC get something for their solid performance in this drama).

  12. I’ll narrow down to the top 5 from the 4 main acting categories (in no particular order) and my picks for winners with asterisk*:

  15. when benjamin yuen and fa man can win most popular already can know tvb rigged it to the max wtf tvb. Purposely want to give all the fist drama actors and actresses to win everything. TVB can go die la stupid. The most rigged award of on earth . lolol…

    1. @lam86 wahaha go back to yr hole small boy. Butt hurt much ? Hahaha hahaha. Back peddle again? What happened to “tvb award winners are selected by professional judges ” and it is made of gold and not mickey mouse award? Eating yr words again? Well that is expected of a troll like.you. muah hahaha go and lick your butt hurt butt boy. Hahaha haha haha.

      1. @isay wahaha u appear when tvb rigged the award? U got shame anot stupid? When benjamin and fa man can win adi know super rigged on earth la kiddo nob..u wan so excited to rigged award? wahahahhaa…ok enjoy it…

      2. @lam86 grow up sour grapes. Peddle peddle harder and harder. Butthurt loser. I’m in a good mood and won’t argue with back peddling snake like.you. Ruco win is rigged ? Who do you think you are to be qualified to judge? I let his sterling results in all 3 regions speak for themselves. Go and lick your butt you need it real BAD!!

      3. @loveruco Exactly right! 君子报仇十年不晚。He should shut his big fat trap instead of making a donkey out of himself by backpeddling again and again. Can’t even grow b-alls and give credit where it’s due, smh!

      4. @isay @loveruco you stupid just duno what is shame. Just go to tvb fb see how many bashing the noob ruco. Use ur fking brain la and still got so excited on the legendary rigged show. Even rigged than 2012 let wayne confidant to win.

      5. @lam86 you can’t say anything else but call people stupid and say the show is rigged? You’re a b-all-less backpeddling donkey. Go and read your previous posts praising tvb awards as fair professional blah blah gold standard blah blah and feel ashamed of yourself. Slimey snake go lick your butthurt butt and just shad up. Or you’ll just look more and more like the rude ill bred snake and donkey people here already know you are. I’ll do you a favour. I’ll send you an air cushion. Cheers sour grapes!

      6. @isay So are you barking the show is not rigged to the max? Or just donkey and that loveruco like you not knowing it but majority people knowing it? Its allright normally for tvb to rig but this is the first time they rigged all the main awards and u still want to bark? Got shame anot? I told u before we need to judge independently every year. I did not say every year will be very professional. Since this year they rig it in such a way, no point for you to bark nor for i to argue further…88

      7. @lam86 oh just shut the fark up. You can continue to bark like a mad dog but no one who’s sane will take you seriously . So now it’s up to you to decide which year is rigged and which is genuine and all professional? Who do you think you are to be qualified to judge? At best whatever you’ve written is just your opinion. You lost your credibility the moment you started flip flopping. The opinion of a pathetic sore loser worm like you isn’t even worth 2 cents Sore loser!!!!! Bleaaaaah to you.

      8. @lam86 btw i want to throw this back at you: pl state “in my opinion ” whatever you’ve written otherwise you will make yourself look very stupid. Sounds familiar? Yeah you bet it is cos this is what you’ve written about everyone who dared to criticise your dear Grace Wong. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Muah hahaha. Karma works in mysterious way butthurt LOSER!

      9. @isay everything knows the show was rigged. Only donkeys lke you are so excited with it. Loser? You enjoying barking on a rigged show? What a nub..lol

      10. @lam86 only a butthurt donkey like you keeps flip flopping to suit your argument. So is tvb awards rigged or not? Is it mickey mouse award or not? Is it professional or not? Is the trophy gold or not? Make up your mind donkey. Don’t say something and then back peddle. You have no backbone and no shame. And pleaseeeeeee pleaseeeeee state that all.you’ve written is just your opinion or you’ll look reallllllly reallllly stupid. I’ll be generous. Ill send you 2 air cushions. Your butt is hurting reallllllll baaaaadddddd. Hahaha haha i so enjoy throwing back your rubbish in your face. Talk about shooting your own foot! Loser!

      11. @lam86 hmmmmm now that you mentioned perhaps it was rigged – not to give best partner to Ruco and ben as you predicted. Otherwise Fist will have clean sweep of all categories open to public voting. Hahaha haha think about it donkey if you can use your brain that is if you have one. And pleasseee a gentle reminder: state “in my opinion ” if you don’t want to look stupid ok?

      12. @isay not perhaps but a fact that it was rigged and the obvious one as the majority knew it. The fact even rigged than sg and malaysia. If roger to be nominated in msia or sg confirm the weaker ruco not even have any chance at all as many malaysian bashing the result at FB tvb. Only donkeys like you still dreaming at coconut shell .Duh…

      13. @lam86 hey flip flop snake, i see that you still can’t make up your mind. Rigged when Ruco wins and not rigged when he doesn’t? Get real. You can’t have your cake and eat it. Now you say TVB is even more rigged than Singapore and Malaysia? You’re getting more and more absurd and desperate. Many Malaysians are bashing Ruco in FB tvb? Show me the proof. He won ALL the polls be it weibo sina facebook oncc and whatever there is. Ruco is very very very popular in malaysia not Roger, Roger won’t win even if DW competed. Get real don’t get sore! Btw, TVB results are audited get that into your thick head or is there even a brain in there? Stop flipflopping. And a gentle reminder pl state :In my opinion” in all your posts muah hahahha ….you forgot or are you stupid? As for the timing to air DW, it is actually an advantage for dramas to be aired near awards date cos people have short memory spans. Many producers want their dramas to be anniversary dramas for that reason. In fact, there was talk that the timing of the drama was to push Roger for 4th time TV king cos the drama was slated to end just before polls closed. Too bad this drama lacked appeal as can be seem by the poor ratings. It appealed to some but not the majority of the viewers. There wasn’t much noise generated in discussion forums and many have commented that after the initial few episodes, the drama started to get boring and they gave up half way. So bleaccch to you spineless snake, suck it that Ruco and Fist swept ALL the awards in ALL 3 regions. Butthurt much? Just shad up and i will stop reminding you how much your butt hurts.

      14. @isay sorry donkey, i dont just judge that,i judge overall. Rigged because based on the nomination and also the other category not just best actor mr donkey. If really judge by professional+citizen for all the awards, u dun dream benjamin and grace can win. Bobby, joyce, vincent, louis anytime good acting and popular than that 2 dudes. Thats why you are such a donkey. And also look at the nomination for best actor, totally abandoned alex fong and uncle liu and put benjamin, vincent there? And when u talk about the audited even show you are legend donkey. 2013 they showed the results by percentage clearly. And then 2014 show abit only. 2015 and 2016 not even showing. And also mr donkey ruco can win in msia and sg because dead wrong was not nominated. After roger got robbed from ruco, u can see so much of bashing in TVB Fb and majority agreed roger’s acting way above ruco in fist and you still living in denial. You wont see such bashing in all the previous tv king winners except ha yu 2009 but although rigged an award to him people will forgive since he is old.Btw enjoy and excited for this rigged show mr donkey..Good day donkey…

      15. @lam86 Butthurt ass slimey back peddling snakey, if the show is rigged why you so butthurt for what??? You forgotten to state “in my opinion” again so that makes you a very stupid person by your own words. Win is win la. No need to be so butthurt. You say one thing and then backpeddle to another to suit your argument. That makes you a very sore butthurt loser. Too bad, next time don’t put your foot in your mouth or shoot your own foot and then desperately try to wriggle your way out of your stupidity by flip flopping here and there. One minute you say gold standard la, awards is worth a lot of money cos made of gold la, professional la blah blah and then sudddenly this year it is rigged. FYI, just becos you don’t think Ben and Grace are as popular as bobby or who on earth doesn’t make you right. You forgot that what you’ve written all this time is just “in my opinion’ donkey? Your opinion doesn’t make it fact, it is just your worthless opinion. Everyone has an opinion but no one is as stupid or stubborn as you to think that you’re right and it is FACT. Check out meaning of FACT in google and tell me if your opinion is FACT. Bashing in forums? The only bashing i see is from you this butthurt donkey who doesn’t know when to shad up and keeps braying up the wrong tree trying to force his worthless opinion here. Your opinion only la, not FACT donkey. I just made a check for the benefit of you donkey that your Uncle Lau and Fong were indeed nominated for Best Actor. Too bad not enough people think they’re good enough to be in top 5. That is life. Too bad for you butthurt butt snakey.

      16. @isay
Not Ruco’s fault he got casted in a role that lacked depth. I’m sure he would have pulled it off if the role is more difficult because he always does. However the reality is if best actor was based on one performance and not on past achievements then Ruco definitely does not deserve the award. Rogers role wasnt popular and was irritating at times but the acting was top notch. Almost every lead role this year has been more demanding than Ruco’s. I have Roger, Kenny, Vincent and Hugo ahead of Ruco this year. Benjamin I have level with Ruco. Ruco has had at least 5 better performances in the past than ‘a fist within four walls’.

      17. @jimmyszeto This is betw slimey and me. I have no issues with others’ opinions including yours or slimey’s. I only have issue with the fact that he keeps flip flopping his words to suit his argument. As I’ve mentioned, everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone thinks they’re right. Likewise I and many who support Ruco for his win are entitled to our opinion and think we’re right. Please respect others’ opinions and not try to reason or force yours on me. That would be much appreciated- freedom of opinion. Your opinion is in no way superior to mine. By the fact that you said Benjamin is level with Ruco i already strongly disagree with your opinion. IMO(note, this is my opinion, especially Slimey snake) Benjamin is no way even near Ruco in acting chops, yet you said they are level. That is a joke to me, sorry to say that. However, if that is your opinion, i am not going to try to convince you otherwise. Peace to you.

      18. @isay You have my support and I also disagree Ben is same level with Ruco. No way he is. Btw, I too can’t stand lam86. I am happy Ruco win. He should have got it earlier.

      19. @isay
I have clearly stated my opinion and not forced my opinion at all. I have also analysed and explained why I think this way. Ruco is a better actor than Benjamin. I think that too but he hasn’t been able to demonstrate that in this role at all because the character is not complicated at all. I have not read any of your previous posts so if you have an opinion can you elaborate more on why you think Ruco’s performance was the best. Can you discuss why you think Ruco outperformed Roger Kwok and Hugo Ng? Just a friendly discussion. Its better to discuss in detail than just make statements.

      20. @jimmyszeto haha you think he can explain how ruco outperformed than roger Did ruco even outperform than KC lau and Cheung keung in law disorder? Did you actually watch how kc lau and cheung keung epic lawyer battle? Without going into court scenes and solely on their acting skills to bring the drama into so intense!

      21. @jimmyszeto you merely stated in one sentence that Roger’s role was popular and was irritating but his acting was top notch. No offence intended but that isn’t an analysis. It’s an opinion. I think fist role is something different for ruco. For once he’s a blue collar collie not very brainy but kind and simple minded somewhat rash, more brawn than brains. I find it a refreshing change. Plus to do those fight scenes was a challenge as he had no martial arts background and had to undego some hard training plus physically bulk himself up. If you saw the NG shots you will know what i mean about how difficult it was to do those few secs or couple of minutes fight scenes. He was physically bashed up. Not trying to hype his sacrifices unlike someone btw. His role evoked laughter tears anxiety excitement for us watching the drama. It is not a flat role so i dont get why people say it’s an easy role compared to roger in dw. I don’t see Roger having a breakthrough role in dw. It’s no different from his previous one that won him the ba. So i say kuen lo showed me a different side of Ruco. He fully deserved his BA in all 3 regions.

      22. @isay
I’m not going analyse it in one paragraph. We have plenty of time to discuss this. ‘Ruco had to bulk himself up and had fight scenes’. The award is about acting. Myolie had to gain a few stones for her role in the past. Doesn’t mean she should win an award. Roger lost weight for his role but I’m not going to use it to justify his fine performance.Almost everyone had to fight in the series including kk Cheung and Carlo Ng. Ruco’s role of a young brash, righteous man has been done to death in every genre. If you have watched the series involving Roger Kwok are totally different.
        1. One is of a man with brain injuries causing him to act like an innocent child.2.One is of an evil money hungry paralysed individual who schemes to get his own way. 3.One is of a character with mental issues due to being mentally tortured from being stranded in a cave for 10 years.

Ruco had a tougher character to play in ‘every move you make’. Like I said it’s not Ruco’s fault that he had this character in ‘a fist within four walls’. He did the best that anyone could have done within the same role.

      23. @jimmyszeto Fighting scenes involve acting too. If you don’t believe me watch Ben’s and Ruco’s fighting scenes and tell me who’s more convincing. Im not saying he shld win becos he had to bulk up and do fighting scenes. It’s just one aspect of this role for him which made it different from his previous roles. So almost everyone had fighting scenes but not from ep 1 to the last. I say ruco did very very well for an actor with no martial arts background. Since you brought up diversity of roles Ruco did act as a mentally retarded man in his atv days and was highly praised too. Also if you watched fist you will know that ruco acted as his own father as well. Notice that the way he handled both roles are different. You never confuse the dad for the son cos the way they spoke was different even down to the eye expressions was different. That is the subtlety of his acting that many people admire. We laughed and cried with kuen lo and could feel his guilt when he realised that all along he had misunderstood his dad. Also his shock and heartbreak when he discovered the truth about Diu Lan. Then acting as a blind guy was something that he hadn’t done before and again he played it convincingly. He wasn’t just the “brash young man done to death”. Obviously we have different taste cos you mentioned hugo as a good actor but I found him to be too OTT in Bk2 so much that he was like a caricature.

      24. @isay
Wow. You wouldnt even class Hugo as a ‘good’ actor. Where have you been the last few decades including last year? Thanks but I saw every episode of ‘a fist within four walls’. If you look back at my comments they you will see I was one of the first that guessed ‘pudding man’ as the villain. Since they everyone has been called the guy ‘pudding man’. Ruco is one of my favourite actor in TVB. Still don’t think he should have won this year. Of the actor/actors there were many who had no fighting backgrounds that did well. There have been many actor/actors who have played 2 roles including the parent but managed to not confuse their roles. That’s their job as an actor. It’s might be a fresh role for Ruco but this typical carefree role has been portrayed by many actors during the years. Wong Fei Hung has also been portrayed as young and brash many times and I haven’t even mentioned non-fighting series yet.

      25. @jimmyszeto Well to each his own. I know Hugo started in Singapore TV many years ago and moved to HK. He isn’t exactly class A actor all along (IMO). I think he’s OTT in BK2 you don’t and I’m fine with that. I for one strongly don’t agree with your taste in terms of assessing acting ability. If you can even say Ben is on Ruco’s level (don’t know if you mean just in Fist or overall) it clearly shows we have different taste. Other example is Matt. I don’t think he is that good an actor at all, very wooden too but his character was likeable in that Louis Cheung-Tavia drama. If i remember correctly, you like his acting too. Just proves that we all like different things.

      26. Please don’t try and twist my words to make it look like that I think Ruco and Ben are the same acting level. We have to monitor their performances fairly based on the year only. Just because you say that we have different tastes does not explain in why you think Ruco performed ‘better’ than the other contenders. Everyone has different tastes but the overall viewpoint of the best actor of the year should be the majority.

      27. @jimmyszeto
        Who make up the majority?
You, lam86 and a few others on this forum? Just consider the tvb ratings for all the dramas, the results of online netizens polling awards , the winners of awards e.g. yahoo, starhub, malaysia, etc. etc..These results speak for themselves. Pl learn to respect that everyone has a right to his own opinion n move on from here. Thank you.

      28. @loveruco
All the polling are votes based on fans. You shouldnt really join this discussion. It’s no top secret that you are the most biased person in this forum. Even die hard Ruco fans are admitting it’s an overdue award rather than award winning performance. I’m a massive Ruco fan too!

      29. @jimmyszeto Mr Jimmy szeto, you said “Benjamin I have level with Ruco” what did you mean? After i pointed that they are no where same level, you said “Ruco is a better actor than Benjamin.” I’m not certain what exactly is your stand on this but by your first statement, I already know that we have major differences in opinion.
“Just because you say that we have different tastes does not explain in why you think Ruco performed ‘better’ than the other contenders” – I have explained clearly with examples why i think Ruco acted very well in Fist and deserved the award. Besides those i mentioned there were many more scenes that were solid acting (especially the emotional scenes) and they are too many to elaborate. I rewatched the whole series in Mandarin recently and despite the dubbing, i enjoyed his acting simply by looking at his expressions, that is how enjoyable his acting is to me. I can’t say that about the other actors you mentioned. They have not been able to sustain my interest in any drama lately beyond at most 5 episodes and that includes all the veterans that were mentioned. Btw, I’m surprised that you put Hugo level with Anthony. That really makes me wonder if your taste is a bit unusual at times. And Loveruco is right to ask you who constitutes the majority. The people posting here certainly do not constitute the majority. They are the vocal minority. The majority are the voting public and they voted for Ruco, is that very difficult to accept? Roger Kwok himself admitted that if he won, there would be a lot of comments about unfairness from other fans, he said there’s no pleasing everyone. Even the esteemed Mr Chow Yun Fatt voted for Ruco, so did Kevin Cheng. Deserving or not, that is always the subject of a lot of arguments after every awards show. Just becos you think someone else is more deserving doesn’t mean you’re right.

      30. @isay
‘ I have Roger, Kenny, Vincent and Hugo ahead of Ruco this year. Benjamin I have level with Ruco.’
What bit of English from my above statement are you confused about? You are formulating opinions when you haven’t fairly watched all of the series nominated. Do you think watching 5 episodes is enough and no wonder you have avoided mentioning how the other actors did worse than Ruco because you don’t even know. You have seen one performance only without losing interest.Everyone should be entitled to an opinion but you should be forbidden to have an opinion if you haven’t watched every episode with a neutral frame of mind.

      31. @jimmyszeto This bit “Benjamin I have level with Ruco.” what do you mean? Level as in what? Do you mean level as in the placing of their acting skills? Or level as to their chances of getting BA? If it is the former i strongly disagree. If it is the latter i disagree even more wholeheartedly. The competition all along has been between Ruco and Roger. Roger was touted to be serious competitor to Ruco but towards the last week of the awards, he was reported to be out of top 3. If you go to HK discussion forums, there are also people criticising his acting, some said he looked like he was reciting his lines. Others criticised the story as plain boring. As for uncle Lau and Alex Fong, no noise at all.
I have avoided talking about the other actors out of respect for them. I don’t want to be accused of bad mouthing the competition. These are actors I have watched before and I wasn’t all that impressed (mostly just watched them but never made a deep impression on me) but i decided to size out the competition by watching their latest dramas. Alas they failed to change my opinion of them and I could not find the interest to carry on. Roger was in fact one of my fave actors before Ruco came along. I watched almost all of his dramas, from the good to the bad. However this year between Roger and Ruco I much prefer Ruco. Roger in DW I don’t see any breakthrough. He has acted such roles before, it is nothing new to him. Perhaps it’s for this reason that he didn’t win the BA this time.
And who are you to tell me that i am forbidden to have an opinion? I dislike having a “friendly discussion” with you becos you like to adopt a condescending tone especially when people disagree with you. If the dish doesn’t taste good, do you have to finish the whole dish before you decide that it’s no good? Stop being so overbearing, you don’t rule me. End of friendly discussion.

      32. @isay
Yes.Im not bothered if you disagree. I’m just ranking this years perfomances and they aren’t the official rankings. In my opinion Ruco is streets ahead of Benjamin in acting ability but either of them didn’t have a strong enough of a role this year to enter the ‘best actor’ race. Last year Ruco did but unluckily faced the strongest performance in years. My favourite character award this year then yes. You keep on mentioning the polls but if I was voting in the polls I would just be voting for my favourite actor nevermind how he performed and all the noise are from fans supporting their idols. Your opinion carries as much weight as a flimsy feather because you admitted you haven’t even watched all the series of the contenders. In your mind it’s only Ruco vrs Ruco in the BA race. Imagine the judges watching only 1 series. Ofc there will be only one winner. Can’t believe you have been calling it ‘your opinion’ all along. Watching one series isn’t an opinion. It’s stubbornness. Maybe you should go and watch all the series then come back with an opinion. There’s still time!

      33. @jimmyszeto Mr szeto, you’re very funny. Are you suggesting that the judges watch EVERY episode of EVERY drama of EVERY actor nominated before they are qualified to judge? How absurd! I wonder how many of the critics here watched EVERY episode of EVERY drama of EVERY actor too? More importantly, I also wonder if these critics watched EVERY episode of Fist to say that Ruco didn’t deserve to win? Or if they even watched Fist at all or how many episodes they watched. I would say the polls and public voting are more popularity based but this will be moderated by the judges’ panel so in the end the results would be part popularity and part performance based. Instead of arguing whether Ruco or Roger is better because this is highly debatable (individual taste and bias), i prefer to ask if his performance is good enough to win the BA. To me, it is. He may have a better role in COD (again individual preference apply) but to me, his acting in Fist is as good as in COD. It’s always easier to act as a villain but to act as a good guy without coming across as bland and insipid is more challenging.

      34. @isay
Acting as a carefree good guy is more difficult than acting as someone with partial mental problems? Now you are really making things up.Look at Ruco’s performance in ‘every move you make’. That is an award winning performance! The awards is a competition. I don’t deny that Ruco is capable and may win TV King at least another 5 times. Looking at if his performance good enough to win TV King this year is not enough. There might be 10 other great performances in the same year. Would it be fair to watch one series only and grant Ruco the award? Since you aren’t bothered about watching most of the series and is a serious Ruco fan you might as well petition for him to win the 2017 BA award as well right now. Makes no difference since however others perform you will ignore them anyway.

      35. @jimmyszeto It’s interesting that you mention “every move you make” as that was the drama that got me interested in Ruco. He was excellent there!!

      36. @happybi
Yeh. Ruco was amazing in that series although he was only in a few episodes. That’s the type of role where an actor can display his full range of acting qualities. This years role didn’t allow Ruco to show his acting range. It’s not his fault. Same with Wayne Lai. Best Actor material but has only mainly been in a sitcom this year. Some years it is better to ignore the awards and hope for better scripts in the future.

      37. @jimmyszeto agree. Ruco is an excellent actor but just need meatier role that can show his range. I have no doubt he could have pulled off Roger role from dead wrong. Just too bad they dont cast him in something like that. His roles this year just wasn’t that great.

      38. @happybi
It takes a bit of luck to be given a good role and one that compliments the actor. Wayne Lai has been given many great opportunities and grasped them well.Raymond Lam has been granted one after another but failed because his acting range is limited. Some actors don’t come across a suitable role in their lifetime. Ruco got a very likeable character to play this year and has increased his popularity but it is a less demanding role than his role in Brothers Keeper 1.

      39. @jimmyszeto yep. He needs more luck in that dept. Raymond Lam is very limited in what he can portray. Never a fan of his acting but know people like him. Not surprised he never got the tvb best actor award. Again this is my opinion before someone chew me up.

      40. @jimmyszeto “Acting as a carefree good guy is more difficult than acting as someone with partial mental problems?” – to this i just have to say that you’re not looking beyond the surface of Kuen Lo’s character. Who said that his role is just that of a “carefree good guy”? He was conflicted and he had his inner demons as well. I’m asking a pertinent question, much as you’ve asked me, whether you or the other critics here have fully delved into his role? How many who commented that he was undeserving actually watched every or most of the episodes with a neutral mind (as you’ve asked me to)? There cannot exist double standards. What you asked me, you have to ask the others as well. So do I have to watch every episode of every drama as you had suggested before I’m allowed to have an opinion? Who says that you can’t cherry-pick? Do the judges watch every episode? Get real!

p/s i edited this post becos I wanted to add this link to the MV for the sub theme. Watch this if you please and tell me if Kuen Lo is only a “carefree good guy”? I see a variety of emotions displayed in this short clip(except no fighting scenes in which he also excelled) and I laugh and cry with him just watching these excerpts, no matter how many times I watched it.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itNS9mY4wWQ&feature=youtu.be

Plus how can anyone not be impressed with that scene where he swallowed the dope? I also liked that scene where he was drunk and blamed his father for killing Nga Lo’s dad. Without overacting, i could totally feel his anguish and guilt. These are just some of the highlights that stuck in my mind. I don’t really bother if you agree with me.

      41. @isay
You are now being plain rude in indirectly criticising the critics by accusing them of watching without a neutral mind. They have given their opinions on what they have seen and it’s a lot more than you. Just because they don’t cry does not mean they haven’t understood the character. It wasn’t exactly a complicated character. For half the series Ruco had to act as he didn’t want to remember the past, therefore he had to act as a carefree young man.As for all these accolades you have given Ruco for ‘fighting scenes without martial arts background’ and ‘acting in father role without confusing with son role.’ I mean seriously, he’s an actor and it’s a martial arts series. It’s his job as an actor to do this and make it look real. It’s like the minimum requirement of an actor.

      42. @jimmyszeto I don’t understand how I’m being rude when I’m asking them the same question that you asked me? Why do I have to withstand your scrutiny and why can’t i ask them the same question that you asked me? What’s with the double standards? How rude can that be? I’m not trying to be rude, I’m trying to ask what i think is a pertinent question.

“For half the series Ruco had to act as he didn’t want to remember the past, therefore he had to act as a carefree young man.” – no in the first half, he wasn’t just a “carefree young man”, he was a righteous young man who wanted to right what he felt his father had done wrong by killing Nga Lo’s dad. The funny parts were added to lighten the mood.

“It wasn’t exactly a complicated character.” – agree it is less complicated than say 11th prince but in the hands of a less capable actor, the role would probably not be as well received as it is now. Like i mentioned before, Kuen Lo also had his inner demons, he wasn’t exactly a simple character either.

” It’s his job as an actor to do this and make it look real. It’s like the minimum requirement of an actor.” yes of cos but how well this is done is a different matter.

All the news reported that Ruco 大热胜出 which means that he had the backing of the public and the media. Anyways, i think we have come to an impasse. That’s all I want to say on this topic.

      43. @isay
It is rude because you have made accusations potentially at many, many critics of not looking deeply enough into Ruco’s role based on no evidence. While I asked you the same question it was already certain you came in as a massive Ruco fan even before you watched Fist Within Four Walls and had barely watched any of the other contenders. Therefore there was concrete evidence you was 100% biased. What can be more biased than watching one series only and the one series is the one with your idol, then trying to justify that he deserved the award? If you understand the meaning of an ‘opinion’ you should realise that your comments are not opinions. They are typical fan/idol comments that should be reserved for Ruco’s fan club page. Merry Xmas btw!

      44. @jimmyszeto Well i certainly wasn’t trying to be rude but trying to be relevant. If you want to insist that I’m rude then i can’t help it. It seems that you cannot accept that what applies to me applies to others. What made you so sure that they watched all or enough of Fist to arrive at their conclusion? You’re just speaking on their behalf without knowing the true situation. I ask the critics to look deeper into the role. It is certainly more than that of a “carefree young guy”. Like i said i watched the other series to check out the competition. I did not carry on to finish through every episode as you had suggested and I don’t see the need to do so either. I cherry picked as many are wont to do when something doesn’t sustain their interest. Who says you can’t form conclusions and have an opinion from that? Enough said. Merry Christmas to you too.

      45. @isay
Right. These critics might have behaved similar to you.So you are saying that potentially all these critics have not watched Fist Within Four Walls, (watched maybe a few episodes) but decided to form conclusions that he shouldn’t win Best Actor. What’s the chances of that and what have they got against Ruco (who is very likeable guy) to put all the energy into trashing him? You have watched one series this year and insulting critics by accusing them of doing the same. It’s good that not many critics will be reading your comments otherwise they will be extremely offended.

      46. @jimmyszeto ” What’s the chances of that and what have they got against Ruco (who is very likeable guy) to put all the energy into trashing him? You have watched one series this year and insulting critics by accusing them of doing the same. It’s good that not many critics will be reading your comments otherwise they will be extremely offended.”

I really can’t answer the first part of your question but I’ll try. There are those who hate him simply becos they think that he has taken away the chances from their idol or simply becos they don’t like him (for no reason than just not liking his face maybe). People can be quite irrational (just look at several prime examples in this forum, i rest my case). As far as I can see there’s only one person who’s obsessive in trashing him here. In any case, i didn’t say that the rest of the critics trashed him, i said i was fine with their opinion right from the start of our discussion becos everyone has their preference. For the second part, I’m not insulting anyone, just asking the same question you threw at me. I don’t know why you’re so insistent that I’m insulting them. What makes you so sure that they watched all or most parts of Fist to arrive at their conclusion? Why are you defending them? It is an entirely relevant question as it seems most said Kuen Lo was just a “happy-go-lucky guy, how difficult is that to act?” which makes me wonder how many episodes they had watched becos as I had pointed out, his character was much deeper than just “happy-go-lucky”. You don’t even know any of them to be able to say for sure that they have watched all or most part of the series before they came to their conclusion so why are you so sure that their criticism is fair? Why would they be insulted if I asked them that very relevant question? It seems to me that the only person in this discussion who can ask questions is you. When i ask back the same question, i’m accused of being rude, smh. You are free to disagree with me but you can’t have double standards.
Finally, as i mentioned before, Ruco’s win is 大热胜出,not爆冷胜出. The media reports are all positive, no one said that he didn’t deserve to win. As you know the HK media is notoriously cruel and don’t mince their words. He has the media and public backing in this win so a few dissenting voices here don’t matter. In any case, this happens every year whoever is the winner, there’s just no pleasing everyone.

      47. @isay you indeed a donkey of the year before 2016 ended. The show was indeed rigged and not only me who said that, its just donkey and some of his fans refused to accept. If my idol won in a rigged show i wont even bark about anything unlike donkey you that duno what is shame. Majority knew uncle liu, alex fong and roger’s acting are top notch and ruco’s standard is not even on their league. Dum F of course there were nominated but not in the top 5 was indeed an insult to the veteran you little donkey! Not enough people to think they are good enough? Stop living in denial mr donkey. Its tvb that rigging the show that decided it not not by professional and citizen or else you wont be seeing benjamin got nominated in best actor awards with wood acting! GO and read at FB tvb mr donkey how they bashing the results. you wont see that happened in all previous tv king except the ha yu and wayne lai 2012. But at least ha yu was inside most epic drama and wayne lai acting still considered top notch! You indeed a donkey la, if my idol won in such a rigged way i sure silent wont barking like a donkey like u one..

      48. @lam86 you are so stupid. Did you Google meaning of Fact? What you stated us fact? Dont make me laugh in your face. All are just your worthless opinion. I feel pity for you that you cannot be happy for others’ achievements. You’re a boneless pathetic sore butt loser.

      49. @lam86 Ruco should have gotten an award for his performance for Brother Keeper years ago. So he deserves this. Now shut up if u can’t accept this. Over looking his talent just b’cos the result aren’t going your way. just like u can’t accept Raymond your idol not getting in 2012 which to u was robbed by wayne. I can also said Raymond is no where wayne and roger level. The result already out so look forward to next year instead of scolding tvb and others stupid all over tvb fb and others

      50. @isay @lam86
Awards will never be fair unless God chooses the winner. It all depends on the criteria and how the winner is chosen. It will be good if TVB wasn’t involved in choosing the winner because they will for sure choose the winner based on their own business decisions. It will also be better if viewers aren’t involved because they choose based on their idols rather than performances. In an ideal world the judges should be people past and present members of the industry or critics that do not work for TVB who do not know the actors but are able to watch all the series before making their decisions. We don’t live in an ideal world though!

  16. They shld just get those two guys to host every TVB show from now on.

Was surprised at the 3 professional awards but the rest quite as predicted even if shocked Katy won, Benjamin won.. the award was so rushed and wasting time.

And why is TVB’s no. 1 anti fan back in TVB?

Anyway congrats to ruco. His moment and his suit is just god awful. Still feel Roger got robbed.

    1. @funnlim when they announce fan man and benjamin also already knew all got rigged. No way their popularity any better than bobby, joyce, vincent and even louis. TVB is just too awful to rig the show in order to promote their artists.

KC lau and Alex Fong totally got abandoned with their epic acting and just got their pictures being shown on the screen for the sake of showing. What a joke bobby can lost to benjamin!
