A Second Win? “Brother’s Keeper 2” Kristal Tin Gets Best Actress Buzz

Will Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) win the TV Queen title again? The 38-year-old actress, who won TVB’s Best Actress and Most Popular Female Character for her portrayal of Yiu Man-ying in 2013’s Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, is getting the Best Actress buzz again for the sequel.

Brother’s Keeper 2, which premiered on August 29, is sequel to 2013’s Brother’s Keeper, a drama about two long-lost brothers living against the changing times of colonial Hong Kong and Macau. The sequel takes place in present day, focusing on Edwin Siu’s (蕭正楠) Lo Wai-son and Kristal Tin’s Yiu Man-ying, and the struggles behind their successful bakery chain in Macau.

Plagued with average premiere ratings and even lower ratings on its second week of broadcast, it seemed unlikely that Brother’s Keeper 2 would get any mentions at the TVB Anniversary Awards this year.

But with the broadcast of Thursday’s episode, a winning opportunity may actually be coming their way.

In Episode 14, which aired on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Man-ying hears from the news that her husband’s (Louis Yuen 阮兆祥) flight had went missing while on the way to Okinawa, where she is temporarily staying in. Man-ying freaks out and breaks down, mumbling and crying to herself. After receiving the news that her father-in-law (Yu Chi-ming 余子明) had suffered a stroke from the shock, she rushes back to Macau to visit them, but gets brutally and tearfully slapped away by her mother-in-law (Angelina Lo 盧宛茵), who blames her for her son’s disappearance.

Netizens were very impressed with Kristal’s acting and praised her performance in the episode. A netizen said it could feel the pain and sorrow along with her character, expressing that episode 14 should be Kristal’s representative work. Others say they will endorse her to be this year’s TV Queen.

The slapping scene, though happened briefly on air, was actually very painful to shoot. Kristal said it took them two days to complete the shot due to unfortunate circumstances on the first day. She explained, “I was sick with hypothermia and gastroenteritis on the first day we filmed it. I vomited after several slaps. I went back to work the next day and we successfully completed the shot.”

  1. no doubt that she’s not a bad actress but tvb really needs to find themselves more leads. i didn’t think she was ready for tv queen couple years ago, maybe she is now but she’s not someone at the same level as sharon tung

  2. So is this show worth watching again? I got bored post episode 5, got bored with the fake oil arc, and the go to Japan arc.

  3. Meh. At most deserve some “pity marks ” for those slaps. Netizens seem to think that whoever got slapped deserve to win some awards. Yawn.

  4. If she’s not up for TVB queen, who else is there to compete against her this year? Any half-decent actresses are gone, and the ones that still exist at TVB AND can compete with her were likely in lousy roles/productions where they won’t stand a chance at winning.

It’s not that I think Kristal is TV Queen material, but her acting, the role, and the production she’s in, was established in a way that it is the perfect storm for her to win.

    1. @anon Kristal tin is not tv queen material…never quite liked her. nancy wu in ‘a fist within 4 walls’ is better than Kristal, although her make up could have been lesser. I like Grace Wong.

    2. @anon Nancy is currently her only competitor with Fist. Don’t know which dramas will release next. Maybe there will be another fadan as a darkhorse.

      1. @tiffany To me, it looks like TVB is gearing up to give the TV queen award to either Kristal or Nancy.  Both of them have 1 more series (the Planet Meow series) that will be airing prior to the awards and it is already slated to be one of the anniversary series this year.  Unless there is a ‘dark horse’ to compete for the award (which, looking at all the upcoming series, doesn’t look like there will be) or TVB decides to pull an upset (which is possible but not likely) – otherwise, either one of them will probably get it.  For the record, I’m not a fan of either actress and whether they ‘deserve’ to receive the award this year or not I really don’t care to comment on, since I haven’t watched any of their series this year.  What I find sad is that TVB is in a position now (and actually has been for several years already) where they barely have any decent actresses to compete for the award, so they end up having to give the award twice to someone who may not necessarily ‘deserve’ to get it twice.  At least on the lead actor side, there is still some decent competition with Ruco giving the veteran actors a run for their money…

  5. Are they making up stories now just so that BK2 can gain more viewers? I stopped after the grand finale at episode 5. Never regret.

Kristal should not get TV queen. Nancy should get it. Very little people are even watching BK2 now. Stop making it like it’s a big hit or somethin……
