Aaron Kwok, Him Law on the Challenges of Filming “The Monkey King 2”

Opening on February 8, The Monkey King 2 <西遊記之孫悟空三打白骨精> features Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Gong Li (鞏俐), Feng Shaofeng (馮紹峰), Xiaoshenyang (小沈陽), Him Law (羅仲謙), and Kelly Chen (陳慧琳). In a recent interview, Aaron and Him spoke about the challenges they had to face during filming.

Portraying the titular character as the Monkey King, Aaron expressed, “Hours were spent on makeup – and because of the sun we could only film four hours at a time. A professional Hollywood special effects team worked on my costume and it was a hassle to put on. So it was best to not take it off and put it back on. I had to learn how to stay still in it and I tried my best to wipe off the sweat. There’s already a lot of sweating in non-action movies, so you can imagine how the sweat was in an action film. Another challenge would be the pin-like hairs on the costume. I felt like there were 5000 little needles poking at me – it was very unforgettable!”

Despite the number of difficulties, Aaron said the most unforgettable moment was when he was filming a fight scene with Gong Li, who plays the White Skeleton Demon. Although Gong Li could have easily used a stunt double for her scenes, the 50-year-old actress opted to film the wired scenes herself. Aaron praised Gong Li’s excellent work ethics and her down-to-earth personality.

Him Law Addicted to Fighting Scenes

Playing Sha Wujing, the Sand Monk, Him did not mind the harsh filming conditions because he had the opportunity to star alongside Aaron. Him laughed, “I thought it was really fun being able to fight with Aaron. I had to wear muscle suits like Aaron so I understood his pain. But I knew about this going into the movie. I sweated just as much and because I had blue body paint, I had to touch up the makeup so often because the color would fade. Although the Sand Monk never had a significant role in the past, he is a significant character in this movie. He has a heroic touch to his character and that’s what makes this film different and refreshing for the viewers!”

  1. saw the 1st one and those CG were so fake not even Hollywood standards… still dont understand chinese people still watch it… it’s so fake seems like a B movie category. Hope the sequel it got improvement.

      1. @msxie0714 wow that totally surprise me, most likely a lower budget cause the CG was obviously overly fake in many ways. I might be picky but I was expecting some Hobbit and Jurassic World CG 😉

    1. @vodka Of course it’s not Hollywood standard. Hollywood’s special effect is the best in the world. Even their budget is so much higher. The CGI of this movie was not as good as the Hollywood big budget movies, but, I still think it’s beautifully done.

  2. agree, the first one was awful. i am stunned tha him law has to wear a muscle suit. isn’t he already very well built?
