Alex Fong on His First Lawyer Role: “I Had Worries”

Law dis-Order <律政強人> gave Alex Fong (方中信) many firsts. It was his first drama portraying a lawyer in his 30-year acting career. It was also his first drama with award-winning actor, Liu Kai-chi (廖啟智).

But Alex had his worries. With Law dis-Order, a legal drama that focuses more on office politics than court battles, Alex was afraid that the drama would cast an unfavorable light on lawyers.

“When I read the scripts of the first few episodes, I was worried,” admitted Alex. “It made it seem like the legal profession is all about playing dirty and double-crossing each other. I was worried that viewers, especially our lawyer viewers, would find the show unrealistic.”

A lot of research went into his role. Alex asked some of his lawyer friends for advice, and even had them read the script. “I wanted to at least portray the profession realistically.”

Quite a few of his friends have seen the show, and they’ve all said he physically resembles a lawyer. “One of my friends had texted me saying that a lot of people are asking me to be their lawyer. I said Kent Cheung is now offering a 20 percent discount to his clients.”

On his partnership with Liu Kai-chi, Alex said, “In my experience, the best partnership is when one is active, and the other passive. Uncle Chi chose a more active approach to his acting. I am pleased with the outcome.”

Pointing out that many of his fellow colleagues in the industry are having children, Alex was asked if he too would like to chase for another child. Alex and his wife, 47-year-old Hoyan Mok (莫可欣), has one 8-year-old daughter.

“No thanks. I’m too old,” said Alex, who is 53 years old. What if it’s an accident? “Touch wood!” Would your wife like to have another one? “She’s old too. But she’s having the time of her life right now. Our daughter also hasn’t talked about wanting to have a sibling.”

Law dis-Order will air its final episode on Sunday, October 16.
