Andy Lau’s Crazy Fan, Yang Lijuan, Regrets Father’s Death

In 2007, an obsessive Andy Lau (劉德華) fan by the name of Yang Lijuan (楊麗娟) caused a media outcry after her extreme methods to meet Andy Lau were exposed. Her parents suffered large economic burdens in order to pay for her fan expenses, and her father committed suicide while trying to fulfill her dreams of meeting Andy.

In March 2007, Lijuan and her father traveled to Hong Kong for an Andy Lau fan meeting. Lijuan had expressed her wish to be able to meet Andy personally so she could introduce herself to him. Though Lijuan managed to take a photo with Andy, she was unable to talk with him privately. A day later, her father ended his life by jumping into the Salisbury sea. He left a posthumous letter, which was a plea for Andy to meet his daughter again.

In response, Andy criticized Lijuan’s unfilial behavior in sacrificing her father’s life.

Yang Lijuan No Longer Idolizes Andy Lau

Self-examining her behavior in the past seven years, Lijuan expressed extreme remorse. After her father’s suicide, Lijiuan volunteered at a charity organization in Lanzhou and refused all media interviews . It took seven years before Lijuan found the courage to speak about her story.

Appearing on a Mainland Chinese talk show yesterday, Lijuan recited a letter she wrote to her deceased father, and apologized for her wrongdoings. She also encouraged another fan on the show to not pursue the extreme actions she did in order to chase her idol. “Andy Lau is not worth it for you to waste your youth,” she said. Lijuan admitted that her “stubborn behavior” led to the tragedy, and cried when speaking about her father’s death.

If Andy Lau had agreed to meet her then, would her father have committed suicide? Lijuan said, “That was only a small goal I had in my head at the time. It’s not as exaggerated as everyone made it seem. Unfortunately, the media blew it out of proportion and nothing could have saved it.”

As for the photo she took with Andy Lau at the fan meeting, Lijuan said that the photo was taken in haste, and she did not even see Andy’s feature clearly. She admitted, “I had wanted to use the media to help me get the opportunity to talk with Andy for about ten minutes. I wanted to chat with him privately so he would know who I was.”

Returning to Lanzhou after her father’s suicide, she tossed away all of her Andy Lau merchandise and burned his pictures. She is finally able to leave the shadow behind.

Andy Lau Had to See Psychiatrist

In 2007 after Lijuan’s father’s death, Andy Lau revealed that he received over 100 letters from crazy fans every day, threatening to kill themselves if he did not meet with them. Andy was shaken and suffered insomnia for nearly two weeks, until he finally saw a psychiatrist to help him deal with the anxiety. The psychiatrist held onto Andy’s cell phones and accompanied him to work for ten days until Andy’s emotional state stabilized.

      1. IKR she so creepy looking and she kinda try to blame it on Andy Lau which didn’t work.

      2. Lijuan father deserve the blame, he should slap her daugther to make her awake

      3. Maybe her father really love her and treated her like a princess so she never gets hit.

    1. whats creepier is that andy lau looks like her father. Her father pretended to die then became andy lau.

  1. If you ask me the whole is insane. I mean probably just a father she has from the sound of it. Your daughter is an insane obsessive fan and you went along w/it? both should have seem a shrink before anything. Sigh…how insane and died over ANDY LAU? haaha OMG..i don’t know whether to laugh or cry for the insanity of these people.

  2. She was able to get that close to him, and he’s holding her hand. What more does she want? She must have threw some major tantrum at dad.

    1. Nah @Kiwiw she is in the news again she talking about it in Chinese media and trying blame it on Andy Lau.

  3. I never get why some fans act like this. Do they really think meeting him will make him fall in love with you?

    1. It’s a mental disorder as mentioned, their obsession with celebrities is beyond anything. I read that those extreme fans imagine and believe that their idols truly exist as part of their own lives,as in they actually share a relationship together (or at least they’d constantly imagine the possibilities of having a relationship with their idol). It’s actually a real mental disorder…

Unfortunately for this fan, her father had to pay the price of her issue, but I’m glad she’s woken up and moved on with her life , or else her fathers death would’ve been even more tragic.

    2. yeah :/ LOL i am somewhat think like that >__< i guess im crazy hahaha

      1. She does not sound remorse at all. Blames it on Andy too…. o.O

  4. Looks like she still think it is Andy Lau fault that cause her father suicide. She never really regret. One crazy girl. Never like Andy but this girl is total nutcase. Actually it is scary how some girls or women willing to fly all over the world to chase stars…very delusion….

    1. it goes for some males too. men and women can be stalkers

    2. That is one crazy psycho women. And I agree with you @Ita i feel she didn’t learn her lesson and don’t feel remorse cause she is still trying blame it on Andy Lau for her father’s death.

  5. If these entertainers had to spend fifteen minutes with each genuine fan, and fifteen with each fangirl or boy, they would have no time for themselves. This woman got to pose with him for a personal photo, what else did she want from Andy? She wanted private time with him to profess her love to him or something?. Wake up, he would have never dated you, or the other delusionals. Why do so many Asian fangirls habor the fantasy that these men will date them and marry them?. I guess that is why they are called fantasies, cause these pipe dreams are unattainable.

She said Andy is not worth it. That is the only sensible thing she said. Him or NO other celebrity is worth it. These men and women are no better than the general public. A celebrity is a normal human being who is more famous than most people, and have more money than a lot of people. I hope she does not put her new celebrity crush through what she did to Andy,

If Andy saw a psychiatrist, I hope she saw one too, cause she needed it more than Andy. I still think that the father should not have encouraged her abnormal obsession with Andy. His death was his fault. The actions of a silly man. No matter how much his daughter was obsessed with Andy, he should not have done what he did. It is sad to say this, but it is the truth.

    1. That’s why I said WHOLE family is crazy. Who in their right mind killed themselves over a celebrity or even doing all those things for fans.
That’s why sometimes in forums on series discussions, I see news that fans brought the favorite celebs snacks, food, pillows etc etc… those r not majorly insane but crazy in some ways too. HELLO, they are celebs, they think they don’t have money to get their own food and whatever else?????? OMG, these psycho fans out there.

      1. What, I disagree… Buying food for celebrities doesn’t really categorises them as ‘crazy fans’. Yeah, celebrities has the money to buy these things and I’m sure fans know that too. But it’s just the thought. Its the same thing as buying flowers or anything else, you think celebrities don’t have the money to buy flowers or any kind of item ? I just think food is just a gift like any other gift. It’s just a way of showing their support in my opinion.

Although In Saying that, obviously some gifts can cross the line from being a nice gift to being just plain creepy. Buying food or any type of present for their idol is far from being crazy or psycho if you consider the many fans out there who spend their time chasing after idols and even stalking them, waiting for them wherever they go…

But I’ve always wondered, receiving sooo many gifts from fans, where do they find the space to store all of it o_O

  6. You people seem to forget even though she was a bit crazy children in china are a bit more over protected by parents due to the child policy. Yes he may have been hasty in killing himself and not seeking his daughter help but maybe from his perspective he was just trying to see his only child to be happy without truly thinking the best course of action.

    1. @Lol

I beg to differ. I know unless a family has lots of money, the family hasto stick to the one child policy in China. It does not however, give the parent/s an excuse to spoil that child beyond reason. If what her dad did had to become a trend in China, there would be a lot of orphans in China. Parents need to step in and encourage these adult children to seek help when they realize their offspring are living in unhealthy, obsessive fantasies.

Maybe her dad did and she said she was going to take her own life, who knows. It would not surprise me if that is what really happened. The father probably took his own life over the stress of selling his body parts and the house, and incurring other financial debts just to support her obsession of following Andy all over the world.. Yes, she should feel sorry and live with the pain of losing her father in such an unbelievable, senseless tragedy. She needs to accept responsibility for her part. However, when all is said and done, what pops did was ultimately his decision.

      1. From the beginning of time, western entertainers never hid their relationships from the public, in fact, thse relationship were encouraged by the studios, and marriages were used as examples to promote family values. The Asians on the other hand, hide these relationships to attain the almighty dollar. Western fans were and are adapted to accept the fact that these men and women have desires and love lives, and they have to face that reality whether they like it or not.

      2. No studio, manager or whoever should have the right to dictate the love lives of these celebrities. The celebrities play into the lies and hypocrisy of it all. Some are so enticed with the love of money that they lie and deny their most precious loved ones for the sake of cash. In other words, they sell out. Andy and others have done this. He denied Carol for years and would have continued doing so if the certificate was not leaked. These men and women have no backbone not to stand up to the studios, and PR people and tell them, I have a spouse and I will not lie about him/her. You don’t have to say who the spouse is. or you can simply not DENY, or ADMIT.

  7. After reading the article, I do believe that her father suicide is her fault and she shouldn’t blame on anyone but herself. & her father shouldnt end his life just because of his daughter obsession on wanting to see Andy Lau.

  8. You know she must have been really really obsessed in order for his father to take his own life like that,I can’t even imagine.

There’s nothing wrong with idolizing celebrities but it is up to a certain extent. Besides if she were to talk to him for 10 mins about either confessing her obsession for him or whatever I’m pretty sure it won’t be the first time Andy had heard that.

It’s just sad to see people obsessing over people in that way….fangirls. I do notice they’re pretty aggressive in HK.

    1. Not just in HK, there are aggressive fans everywhere around the world. Agree, there isn’t anything wrong with idolising, but when it affects your everyday life or even causing issues with you and your family or friends, that’s when it becomes an issue imo..

    2. This fan is from China not HK. Anyway there are major obsessive fans all over the world not just HK or Asia.

    3. That very word idolizing is a scary word indeed. You can have your favorite celebrities, support them, buy their stuff, travel to meet them, or even give them little gift tokens, nothing wrong with that.

When it gets to the point of what this fan did, it is beyond scary. There are some scary things too, like attacking and lying on others who speak negatively about a celebrity, starting fights with fans of other celebs. I see a lot of people who will give up their own families for these people. I see fans who do not want to admit the faults and bad habits of these entertainers and will pounce like a lion or tiger on anyone who dares to speak against their leader. Now that is scary.

  9. Is it just me or does anyone think the entire family is cray cray?! I just don’t understand why her father will commit suicide over his daughter meeting andy lau.. If they were poor enough why would they go to extreme lengths for her to meet him?
Obsessive fans are scary as heck.

  10. I vaguely remember reading about this when it happened. The dad got into some major debts to fund his darling daughter’s obsession. It seems that when she finally got to meet AL but was not granted private time with him, the dad got very p1ssed after all that he had done to fulfil darling daughter’s wish and took his own life partly as a form of protest against AL. She looked really creepy in that pix, the way she was staring at AL! Just crazy obsessive to the max!

  11. Pure obsessive-fan disorder at its worst! Fans like that’re typically delusional approval seekers. Unfortunately, this condition is very common. As it were, a few posters here clearly display this mental disorder by incessantly replying to posts all day long, defending their POV on their idols against *all* naysayers from dusk-to-dawn, literally. Geezus. They’d stop trying to live vicariously through their idols.

I think the only person worthy of some pity is her father. Such unconditional love is exceedingly rare.

    1. Well, the mentality of fans is questionable when they go into a threat and use dirty underhand lies to turn other commenters against someone who does not bow down to their idols, and speak negatively of him or her. Yang’s case was just more public, and unfortunately her father paid the price with his life.

Some people will and HAVE maliciously set out to destroy others by accusing them of doing things they never did, or would ever do. Thank God there are fair commenters who called them out on their evil lies

No one will torate a small, small, small child being hurt, attacked, or insulted by anyone, especially if that person is an adult. There are cases of people accusing others in public forums of doing that because they know the backlash that will happen. The accused person does not worship their idol so it was spitefully done. I abhor and loathe people like that. It says a lot about the fan mentality and it is not pretty. I believe the vicious liar will attack that person if they get near the non worshipping, person who dare speak out against their idol. Sad and very frightening.

    2. Well there are over zealous fans who will pounce on commenters and spread vicious lies about them because the commenters who do not worship their idol. I know. It happened to me recently. You have to shake your head and pity such patheticness.

  12. I think the whole family is nuts, firstly to have a crazy obsessive daughter, and then unreasonable parents who just spoil her and indulge her every whim.

The only victim of this incident is Andy Lau who is blamed by everyone for not satisfying these nutters and leading to the dad jumping into the sea. They are solely responsible for the outcome.

Apparently around the same time, a fan (could be yang, I cant remember as it was so long ago) waited for Andy outside his apartment and pushed Carol to the floor.

    1. Some people have accused others of child bashing because they know how people feel about kids, and will never tolerate someone bashing children. The only thing is, it was a vindictive lie and accusation, done so that others will attack the person accused of bashing. It was done because the accused person would not bow down and worship their god. When it comes to that, you do have to question the sanity of such over obsessive fans.

      1. ANDY WOULD HAVE FIRED THE BODY GUARDS WHO LET SOMEONE PUSH CAOL TO THE GROUND. NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE. LINK TO THE NEWS PLEASE.

      2. cAROL HAD BODYGUARDS EVEN AS EARLY AS THE NINETIES. THE FAN WOULD HAVE BEEN HELD BY THM AND ARRESTED FOR PHYSICAL BATTERY. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN BIG NEWS, NEVER HEARD OF IT.

      3. Sorry, but what are you replying to in my post?

Hey. The carol pushing thing was something i heard in the tian ya forums years ago, no link.

    2. How can anyone be able to enter apartment building and wait for him outside his apartment? Did he live in low cost apartment, where there’s no security guard? There’re many layers of security: at the entrance having bodyguard, at the lift: card scanning machine and everywhere having camera. Do you have any proof?

    3. I highly doubt that is true about Carol being pushed to the ground. If so,it would have been all over the news. Even though many hate Andy for not opening acknowledging Carol fit many years. One thing I have a good feeling about is that Andy always protects her very well so I highly doubt anything like that can happen to her.

  13. her poor father loved her so much that he was no longer irrational. he uprooted their family, and sold all their stuff just so they could come to hk to pursue his daughter’s dream of meeting andy. when that didn’t go as anticipated, he thought killing himself would fulfil his daughter’s dream. i wish she had woken up before her father made this sacrifice. or i wish the parents had put a stop to it years ago. it’s just a very sad story for everyone.

  14. I think if he had just revealed that he had (longtime) girlfriend then his crazy fan numbers would reduce significantly, but the fact was he didn’t have the courage to tell this truth for afraid of losing fans, that was the contradiction. She was young then, not able to have mature thought and probably she’s not educated enough. Her father loves her so much because she’s the only daughter

    1. you must be kidding? so now, it is Andy’s fault, that she is crazy and also drive her dad to insanity? honestly, some people need to take responsibility for their own action.

    2. I agree with cuckoo, she did’nt mean to blame who’s fault here she was just giving a general opinion it might be right ppl may have this kind of action or obsessions towards their idol why not , nothing surprise to me.

    3. I am not sure if people knowing that he has a girlfriend and is married would make that much difference since we saw another crazy fan who knows all that but yet still wanted to offer her virginity to him. These crazy fans have major psychological problems that are way beyond just idoliizing anyone.

      1. I don’t know either. But the first thing I expect is he didn’t lie so many decades. A girl growing in non-showbiz, she’s surely fantastic higher because she doesn’t have experience, if she’s got some experience with some men, her fantasy’s surely gone far away.

  15. Everybody makes choices in their life, and she made hers and thus she needs to face the consequences. People today always take things for granted and don’t even realize that consequences knock on your door sooner then expected…

  16. Ok, this girl had and probably still has issues, but all sides have to take some responsibility.
Andy Lau and the entire HK entertainment industry exploit the fan culture, so they’re not saints in any way, so no ‘poor Andy’ crap please. I understand he’s probably never asked his fans to behave the way they do, but then again, his entire career rests on these girls and their obsession, so he’s really in no position to criticize the girl’s behaviour. The girl’s father should have done what a father should do, parent and teach his daughter rather than indulge and enable her fan obsession.
End of the day, it’s easy to blame this girl for being stupid and crazy and delusional, but people have to realize the problem goes beyond this girl and permeates HK/Chinese culture. Everyone, from the girl to celebrities to the media to the entertainment industry to marketing companies to parents, etc., need to take some responsibility.

    1. @MT

Very, very wisely said. I agree with every word. I am going to get into trouble for my comment but so be it. I know each continent and each country has its own unique cultural practises, but the Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan and Korea people take it beyond normal boundaries

      1. Yes, a lot of people have a part to play in this, and other incidents like you mentioned.. Whenever the celebrities are called out for their wrongdoing, obsessed, neurotic fans go bonkers on anyone who dare to offend their idol. This is a part of that culture, and a very unhealthy one to boot.

    2. I personally feel that even though some may think that the entertainers have some blame, however, I think the fans and their families have a choice. It is not like they are forcing them to idolize them or support them. It is sort of like when someone tries to sell a product, whether you buy it or not is up to you.

Fans who idolize is normal if they know what their limits are and use idolization in a positive way then it can help rather than harm them. That was personally how I handled it when I was a teenager. But with this girl or any other fan that is crazy, their psychological problems go way beyond just idolizing anyone. I think her parents were crazy as well.

    3. @Mt,
I agree with you to some extent, but as I have said, the fans and public all have a choice. It is not like Andy or anyone is forcing them to support or idolize them. I also do not agree that his career or any established actor/ actress rests on it. That applies more to the younger and newer idols with a young and handsome face. Andy is and should be past that.

I do agree with you that this girl’s problems go beyond just idolizing Andy or anyone. She has way more serious psychological problems that need to be treated. I do not really agree with the marketing companies and such because like I have said,we all have a choice and no one is forcing this girl or anyone to idolize, support or do anything for any celebs at all.

  17. There is no excuse for the denying that Andy did,but he knows he can manipulate his worshippers, and he sure does. He and others do it all the time. If the triads wanted to find his wife, they will track you so easily it would make his head spin. The paps/media never went close to her, they always took photos from a distance, and never approached her to ask questions. The fans need to stop living their lives through these idols, and the delusionals need to stop their impossible, unhealthy fantasies. I agree with @MT when he/she said all those people are to blame.

  18. I think both father and daughter suffers from some mental disorder. The daughter is now blaming it on AL because she may end up killing herself if the hatred is not directed elsewhere. AL do need to worry because if this woman still harbors hatred instead of indifference after all these years, she may turn out to be a vindictive stalker waiting for opportunity to strike when/where he’s vulnerable.

  19. I have nothing against Raymond, but I agree with @Andrew. Raymond is another serial denier. All for the sake of the almighty dollar. I wonder if these people are capable of true love and respect when they so blatantly deny their loved one for the sake of money. It is sad, isn’t it.

    1. Who does not enter this business not hoping to make money and become famous? If not, then why enter? Sure some do have the passion, but that alone cannot feed you.

  20. Ok, so what if she got the chance to talk to Andy in private? What’s the outcome? She might kill him? Kidnapp him? Dumb fan… Too many stupid fans in this world.

  21. My comment did get removed even though I was listing the facts.

It is a fact Uncle Ray announced his relationship and annoyed the public AFTER his HK concert. He was scared fans will not see his concert and admitted after the concert.

    What a fake hypocrite.

  22. his Yan needs a lot of help still, and celebrities need to stop giving these fangirls false hope by making them think they are available to them

  23. I have not found anyone suitable to marry, ha, and all that time already married. My fans are my family, I am married to my fans, ha, such blatant and cruel exploitation. When I marry, I will let my fans know, these words uttered weeks before marriage got exposed. Made a circus of a funeral, no respect for the dead or family of the dead.

    1. Boy you never pass up a chance to blast Andy. He is not the only one that has done so. But he suffered a lot from it,so in a sense he has been punished but yet sadly many still hold grudges and repet the same old over and over again…. We all know you Hate Andy to death so no need to repeat it over and over again. We all get the message…

      1. Well hello to you too. I am having a good day. And yes everyone enters the business to make money. However, when that money is made by lying and manipulating the gullible, worshipping naïve fans, it speaks volumes about the morals and value systems of these people.

    2. AL’s one of the worst liars in HK showbiz, stringing his fans along with insincere proclamations that they’re like his family. Yet he continues to command a huge following of fans in this fickle showbiz world. I’ve to admit that I’m baffled.

    3. AL’s one of the worst 1iars in HK showbiz, stringing his fans along with insincere proclamations that they’re like his family. Yet he continues to command a huge following of fans in this fickle showbiz world. I’ve to admit that I’m baffled.

  24. I thought I was obsessive (not for Andy Lau), but this article just made me look like a small tiny fan.

  25. Ok, lets be honest here, no holds barred. Fans, no one likes when their idols are caught doing or saying things that are questionable, but there is something called reality, and these idols are not immune to being nasty, indifferent, immoral, ruthless and sometimes plain outright cruel. They have to shoulder the blame for feeding their wallets and their egos with their lies and exploitation.

    1. They know the fangirls and fanboys live in these unhealthy fantasies about one day being their special someone, why do they encourage it?. It is like pouring kerosene oil on an already raging fire. They do it because they know they can, they do it to make money at the weakness and mental sickness of these fans. They are ruthless reptiles. If fans find excuses for their gods, they are just as ruthless, and are crazier than the fanatics.

  26. I think Andy fuelled the idolism of young girls by hiding his relationship with his wife. He doesn’t want the world to know that he’s taken as he knows the young girls will ditch him and his popularity will fall. Thus his earnings will fall too!

Now that he has earned enough, he announces to the world that he’s now married. How selfish of him! And he thinks he’s not directly responsible with all his fans who has gone to the extreme of idolizing him…

    1. Yeah is a human nature of greed to live in a wealthy life, well who wants to live poor. Time won’t wait for us if one don’t make fast money is the same to all these artists
