Barbie Hsu Underwent Extreme Diet to Lose Pregnancy Weight

Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) recently took part in Mainland Chinese reality TV program, Are You Normal? <你正常嗎>. Perhaps inspired by her participation in the program, Barbie chatted openly about her phobias, including her fear of miscarriage during her pregnancy.

Barbie joked that her one-year-old daughter was like her boss, whose every wish was her command. However, being a loving mother did not change Barbie’s obsession with vanity. She admitted that immediately after giving birth, she was so desperate to lose weight that she resorted to only drinking liquids – such as confinement soup – and no solids for a week. At the end of the week, she nearly collapsed out of sheer hunger and exhaustion.

On whether she was prone to odd tendencies, Barbie laughed and insisted that she was generally quite normal, unlike her younger sister Dee Hsu (徐熙娣), who was very accident prone. Barbie revealed that she did however go through a stressful phase during her pregnancy. She was paranoid about her fetus being a stillborn and asked the doctor at every appointment, “Is the heart beart gone?!” This upset the doctor so much that he once reprimanded her, as he was afraid of his other patients overhearing the conversation and being frightened.

  1. What more weight to lose? She’s never been on an average weight! Maybe too much weight lost caused the miscarriage. Come on woman! Which is more important? Your weight or the baby that you are carrying?!

    1. @tess she’s talking g about loosing weight after giving birth!

Hormonal changes causing pregnancy women to worry about miscarriage especially no way of telling whether the fetus is still growing unless through ultrasound. The pregnancy process is a very long journey. The fetus can died in the womb for weeks without feeling any symptoms.

Even if loosing weight during pregnancy won’t caused miscarriage. Some pregnant women just loose weigh automatically during pregnancy bc of morning sickness and some of them can’t eat or drink due to feeling nausea or sensitive to food smell. Some moms have this problem after birth too.

      1. @azndoraemon being on a ideal weight before conceiving is also very important. If she’s so self conscious about her weight I’m not surprised if she’s having a strict diet regiment even when she’s pregnant. The explains why she’s so paranoid when is carrying her baby and kept asking doctor if the baby inside is ok?

      2. @tess miscarriages are very common. Many women just have fear of loosing the baby in general not bc of weight loss. She never said loosing weight during the time she was carrying her daughter. Being skinny will not affect from conceiving but being obese will affect it. Read the article again and do research on pregnancy.

I’m going through it right now so I can understand it well. Some women have zero symptoms during their whole pregnancy and they won’t understand women that are having crazy symptoms. Some women throw up all the time and can’t hold any food at all. You have to Go through the pain personally to understand. Every women bodies are different. Hormonal changes can be very evil too.

My coworker lost 10 +lbs during her pregnancy, she couldn’t eat anything and couldn’t even drink any water for 7 months. She threw up even her stomach was emptied. She had to go to the hospital a few times to get Iv (sodium). Her baby is fine and healthy. She had the same problem with her second pregnancy and baby was fine again.

I have a friend that is preg right now and she is super paranoid about the heart beats of her baby bc her previous pregnancy – the fetus died 3 weeks ago inside and she didn’t know until her next checkup. Dr usually only see their patient once a month.

      3. @azndoraemon err actually studies have shown that being anorexic harms a woman’s chance of conceiving much more than the being obese. Evolution favors well nourished bodies, not starving. This is why many women who exercise too much or are in too much stress sometimes get amenorrhea – loss of periods.

Seeing how skinny Barbie is, im surprised she was even able to conceive. But once she did she had to be careful not to lose it.

      4. @coralie I’m not talking about anorexic and I don’t think barbie had that problem and she’s not extremely underweight.

Some pregnancy women instead of gaining weigh they loss weight bc they can’t eat nothing and on top of that they vomit all the time.

Having regular monthly period doesn’t mean the egg will release either. It’s so common for women to skip period but they still can conceive bc there are 12 chances in a month. My sis in law was able to get preg when she didn’t have her period. There are so many factors. Normal skinny is different from unhealthy skinny.

      5. @azndoraemon I only said that because your first analogy was incorrect. Skinny vs obese? That’s not even comparable because one is the semi standard and the other is an extreme, which is why I said between anorexia (one extreme) vs obesity (another extreme), evolution favors obesity.

Gaining or losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean anything during pregnancy as the body can cope with reserves. It’s not healthy for the baby to lose weight, but it won’t always cause a miscarriage.

So your sis in law had amenorrhea?

      6. @coralie normally obese is the term people refer to as overweight. When I say skinny vs obese is just normal healthy kind not with an disorder. U still can have normal diet to be skinny without a disorder. I used to work in the infertility clinic and fat people have harder time getting preg, overweight can cause the baby to have diabetic and mother has hard time carrying the baby due to high blood pressure.

If baby is born at 4 or 5 lbs is still healthy bc they will grow after birth. Drs only concern with the growth of anatomy parts of the fetus.

We have to calculate the age, height, muscle weight to determine excessive weight loss or gain to have infertility.

My sis in law didnt have amenorrhea. I was just saying alot of women don’t have period every month and this is completely normal not bc they have to have a medical condition that causing it. Women that have pcos can still get preg. You still can get preg if you don’t have your period, that had happened to my sis in law – this is just meaning irregular period not amenorrhea. Some people have 2 days period some have 5-7 days and is still normal.

      7. @azndoraemon maybe it’s an issue of semantics. I did recently read an article stating that between women of very low weight and women who are obese, IVF is more successful for those who are obese. Whether they’re more successful in carrying the baby to term is another story.

Yes you can have amenorrhea and still have children. The egg stays in you, just that body hasn’t properly disposed of it. There’s primary & secondary amenorrhea and both are symptoms rather cause of an underlying disorder. Regardless not all amenorrhea women are able to have children and those who are have a very difficult time conceiving, so either way it’s biological imperative that women who want children to watch their weight.

  2. She’s trying to lose post partum weight.

This won’t affect her baby, unless she becomes weak as a result … or is breast feeding.

Among my Taiwanese friends – priority on beauty and weight is very very important.. One of my dance friends weighs herself twice daily.

    1. @nomad822 aint that sad? But primarily this is cus Asian countries have no discrimination law and beauty is purported as the universal method to climb the social ladder.

      1. @coralie – Which countries that have this law u are talking about?

I don’t think anyone enjoy being fat or having big belly..,? This is just how the fashion goes. Even men likes to have muscle instead of body fat. This is for ordinary people not just celebrities. Do u see designer clothing have
        Over sized clothes?

    2. @nomad822 – losing weight doesn’t affect breast feeding. My friend who is preg now been loosing weight from her pregnancy and she’s also breast feeding her toddler. Some people have normal body weight but don’t have any milk at all.

      1. @cuckoo as long as her body produces milk then the milk is fine. Loosing weight won’t affects the quality of the milk unless u have disease or cancer.

      2. @azndoraemon:

I stand corrected. Always assumed that a breastfeeding mom (like expecting mothers) also had to maintain a well-balanced diet because the nutrients consumed would affect baby’s intake.

But NOT so according to this article – the only body she MAY be harming (in an insufficient diet situation) would be her own. Because baby gets first dibs at nutrients, and whatever leftovers is mom’s. Nature is cool like that.

Source: Breastmilk and Your Diet – HealthyChildren.org
“If your diet contains insufficient calories or nutrients to fully sustain both you and your nursing child, your mammary glands will have “first shot” at your body’s available nutrients to produce highly nutritious breastmilk, leaving you to rely on whatever is left over. So a less-than-ideal diet will probably not affect your breastfeeding child, but it may leave your body at nutritional risk”

@ coralie: Yes, too much emphasis as ‘the way up a social ladder’, and often the way to hold onto a man. Like standing and fending for oneself independently regardless of looks cannot be done as a 21st cent educated woman. The “男主外女主内” (men in charge of outside matters, women inside) theory which comes with the same crowd and mindset doesn’t sit down well either.

      3. @nomad822 there are tons of info online and people will get all kind of broad answers. What are drs for then? I’m sure my friend dr wouldve asked her to stop b feeding her toddler while she’s pregnant due to weight loss. Keeping a well balance doesn’t mean the mammary glands will produce milk either. In this article I don’t think she is not eating at all- even drinking chicken soup is fine. Now days alot of people became vegetarian – they still can get protein/nutrient. Your body takes time to adapt from carnivore to vegetarian. Once your body is used to the change then things will be normal. I used to eat big meal and then I cut down to half and eat more times instead – my stomach growl so much and I felt weak at first. You can get plenty of nutrient even from drinking smoothie bc you can add all kind of protein and vitamins to the drink. Eating nuts also good source of diet.

I tried not to believe too much stuff on the Internet bc of the variable info given and alot of it are varies from person to person based on body type. I believe the blood test results and the factors I get from two of my drs bc they look at the results first before drawing any conclusion.
