Bernice Liu Refuses Botox Injections; Axed from CTI Dramas?

Since receiving back surgery last year, Bernice Liu (廖碧兒) has been unable to exercise and stave off weight gain. In recent photos, Bernice’s face appeared noticeably more swollen than in past years. Allegedly, City Telecom’s (CTI) Ricky Wong (王維基) may have even asked her to get botox injections to slim her face. When Bernice refused, CTI’s original decision to feature her in upcoming dramas was allegedly put on hold.

Face Magazine called Bernice “pizza face” due to her more plump face. The online community also mocked Bernice’s recent weight gain, addressing her as “Big Yee.” One netizen even wrote that the “width of Bernice Liu was equal to twice the width of Moses Chan (陳豪). She is extremely wide!” Since Hong Kong society valued slimmness, in which the latest slimming products were frequent best sellers, Bernice’s broad frame became an object of scrutiny.

When Bernice appeared at a CTI function in March, her weight gain apparently shocked Ricky Wong. An inside source close to Bernice commented, “Bernice’s face was swollen and she was much heavier than before. She did not set her hair on that day. When Ricky saw her, he was a bit shocked. Several days later, a CTI staff member called Bernice, urging her to lose weight. Since Bernice injured her back last year, she cannot exercise. Ricky Wong advised her to get botox injections to slim her face, otherwise it will not look good onscreen. However, Bernice replied, ‘I do not think that I am fat,’ refusing to get botox.”

A CTI Public Relations member, Ms. Cheng, was vague on the matter of botox injections, “Of course, it is best for an artist to look good during filming. However, we will also respect their decisions.”

Bernice’s manager, Gary, also commented that Bernice will not be receiving botox injections. “Since she is filming in China now, her figure will slim down! Getting botox is out of the question! I never heard that filming dramas required such terms. Even if there were such terms, we will not comply with them!”

It was reported that Bernice had signed a management contract with CTI for 3 dramas. CTI originally scheduled to film a new drama starring Felix Wong (黃日華), Kelvin Kwan (關楚耀), and Bernice Liu in August. The insider revealed that Ricky may now axe Bernice or put the project on hold.

Further, it was understood that Bernice was sought to appear in a CTI drama about vampires, starring opposite Terence Yin (尹子維) and Taiwanese singer, Danson Tang (唐禹哲). However, now Bernice’s casting in the new CTI drama became uncertain.

Jayne: Botox injections are a very common quick-fix for celebrities these days. Hopefully, the rumors that CTI is “freezing” Bernice because of her refusal is not true.

  1. The HK soceity, despite being so advanced in so many areas, are still rather shallow when it comes to body image and appreciating an artist for their talent. I respect Bernice Liu for standing by her principle and standing up for herself!

Jesus christ, so superficial. I mean I know it’s the industry but still, the things people write just to sell their magazines these days. so trivial

  2. Can botox slim face? Why not get a good doctor for her to cure what’s wrong inside than what is superficial outside? I mean I am not a fan of her acting but she is too young to have botox. Look at Nicole Kidman. What a total waste of beautiful talented woman, thanks to botox.

    1. Funn,
Botox relaxes the jaw muscles, thus botox injections are a popular procedure for Asians. Teenage singer, Charice had allegedly received botox at 17 in order to get slimmer face. Gillian Chung got botox on her legs to make them slimmer?

Botox and other injection-type alterations are now preferred because they are not permanent (thus considered to be less risky).

I wonder if Sharon Chan and Fala Chen had botox on their jaws because their faces seem noticeably slimmer than before. Sharon’s face shape in particularly is so elongated now. I believe the common reason TVB stars cite is “lymph node massage” to reduce swelling of the face when asked how they achieved miracle facial slimming.

      1. Sharon Chan and TY are reported to be frequent clients of a beauty salon where they got botox to help their face smaller. Of course, both denied.

      2. About Fala, she got a role in Da Mo Yao! I am sure she will look lovely. Her role is supposed to be very beautiful. Surprising news. I thought it was a hoax.

      3. @ Funn

Why did you think it was a hoax? Is Fala not pretty enough for the role? It’s weirder that they can replace the second female lead mid-production though.

      4. I agree that the faces of both Fala Chen and Sharon Chan were bigger and wider. Not surprised if they had Botox injections to make their faces slimmer.

Fala chen did not look very pretty when she was competing for MCI, but she is very pretty now.

      5. In the novel, Fala’s character appearance is quite minimal for 2nd lead female character. It’s more like a supporting female character, perhaps the series also doesn’t have that many scenes and they can afford to switch cast midway.

      6. @ Sehseh

Thanks for clarifying. I just read that it was the second female character so I thought it would be a more substantial role. Still, it seems like there’s quite a bit of hype so it might be a good opportunity for Fala anyway.

      7. Well, this might be Fala’s chance to break into the Mainland market. She has indicated that she was waiting for the right script…

As for Sharon, she is way too skinny! You see in her face, body, etc.

      8. What? Fala will be in Da Mo Yao with Hu Ge and everyone? I guess that is her first role in any mainland series. I don’t think it is the first lead since I think LSS’s character is.

      9. Face alteration is really freaking me out… It just seems so painful to go from a square face to a more slimmer face.

      10. well I don’t have time to read through every single comment in detail…

      11. I wouldn’t call her 2nd lead. I would say a supporting character, significant one though. I thought it was hoax because I didn;t know Fala so well known to be cast.

      12. So LSS is going to film Da Mo Yao again? It means her heath is better now. Glad.

  3. ‘I do not think that I am fat,’ refusing to get botox.”

Kudos to Bernice. She rare female that satisfied with their weight. Why need to go fast way for slimming as it harm bodies health.

  4. I am not surprised because appearance is very important to an actress. But, kudos to Bernice for standing by her principles. There are other means to lose weight. I’m sure work will keep her busy.

    1. +1. Good for Bernice for sticking to her guns, although I wouldn’t be surprised if CTI froze her because of them.

    2. Kudos to Bernice for sticking to her own principle..but she’s losing opportunities and MONEY for being too “wide” to be on screen..so in the end, who’s losing?

      1. I agree and fully support Bernice. It is sad that the circle is becoming more and more shallow these days. I never really noticed that Bernice’s face was squared before.

  5. if this is korea, they wouldn’t hesitate. kids receive ps as “”gifts”” for their 16th birthday is very common. its borderline sad.

    kudos to Bernice!

  6. The square face is an unique point of Bernice. I think she is pretty with it.

  7. Can’t blame her for not doing proper exercise when she isn’t fully recovered yet. Not a fan and don’t think her acting is great either, however I got to admire her for sticking to her fundamental values i.e. no botox!

Poor girl the “cheap man of the century” pretended to be innocent while she was receiving surgery.

  8. poor Bernice. She’s just had a string of bad luck and bad press. Seems the paps in hk really hate her and favor moses and aimee.

    1. Well, in hk and most asia countries, the society really values slim girls more than fat girls. Everyone try to be slim here and they sometimes only eat a plate of rice a day while some doesn’t eat white rice at all just to look slim.

  9. I’m proud of Bernice for sticking up for herself. Honestly, it really irks me how shallow the Asian entertainment industry is, especially when it comes to weight. Besides, this is how her face/jaw is structured. You can’t change it (naturally)! She’s beautiful the way she is and I hope she’ll choose to age naturally.

I think it’s a terrible thing to use Botox at such a young age (e.g. Charice, Gillian on her legs). I especially despite the celebrities who advertise it like Gillian, when she went into details about how many shots she had per leg, etc. That just gives fans a reason to use it. Even though it’s less risky than plastic surgery, botox is still a risky procedure (side effects, bad results).

    1. Why most hk actresses like TY, Kate, Linda, fala, sharon, natalie, nancy and etc always look slim off and onscreen? That’s because when they’re onscreen, they can look “average” size there.. I was told that u’ll look a bit fatter onscreen.

  10. Bernice has always had a healthy image and seems very confident. Although the HK actresses and singers probably do plastic surgery etc too, it doesn’t seem as extreme as in Mainland and e.g. Korea.

  11. She looks fine in this picture, her face shape is square similar to Brad Pitt and it will always appear bigger than heart or oval shape face. Her shoulder still seems slim and at the end of the day, she is a pretty girl and if she can act, Ricky Wong should consider her.

    Go Girl!!

  12. Bernice looks fine. Chinese people have to stop being so shallow. If anything I feel many actresses new to gain weight. Too many of them look too thin on television. Can’t imagine how thin they look in reality.

    1. What a racist thing to say. The entertainment industry in ALL countries is shallow.

  13. Glad that Bernice refused to have that botox on principle. Perhaps it was the steroids she had to take for her back that caused her moon face. Once she is off them she should be all right again.

  14. Bernice should not be yelled at, instead she should be commended for rather looking a little chubby than take all those shots and medication to slim her down. Look at all the american artists, they get so fat then suddenly slim down within a short period of time and have the perfect body. They obviously didn’t go dieting and exercising to acheive that result.

  15. Go on you Bernice! You’re beautiful the way you are no need to use botox.

  16. HK ppl who mocked Bernice for being ‘big’ are ruthless. What is the point of injecting poison into your body to look beautiful n to impress the easily-forgotting viewers? Bernice gotta love herslf first b4 otrs can love her and she is doing exactly what it is now. Ppl come in different shapes and sizes. Being slim doesnt mean one is beautiful esp. with the help of drugs. To those who resort to drugs, botox etc. to look impressive physically are those of low-classs and low mentality!

  17. It is true that Bernice is not fat and may have healthy weight offscreen, but it is also true that an actor’s volume is “magnified” onscreen; so yeah, Bernice may look “big” especially when being surrounded by stick-thin artistes who look “thin” onscreen(and dangerously thin offscreen :P).

    1. I guess bernice’s figure is suitable in Hollywood while ty, kate, nancy, natalie will be label as anorexia in the states.

  18. Bernice definitely made the right decision in not injecting botox. Over time, she will be able to lose weight so there is absolutely no need for the botox. As for Bernice being “big-boned”, it is completely wrong how people can make fun of her like that. Moses is not dating Bernice anymore so I do not see why they should be compared.

  19. bernice started out okay with her acting and have improved in her acting. But her last few series with tvb, for some reason her acting got worse and worse

  20. She is fine the way she is!! the people that called her fat should be ashamed of themselves…and in my opinion I don’t think moses is/are/will ever be a “deal” that people make him to be…jerk.

  21. i kinda disagree when ppl said chinese or HK entertainment circle is shallow. All entertainment industry are shallow period. Name one that doesn’t. It’s all about appearance and look.

But i would say it is true that in asian society that if you are big bone or wider, you are consider not that attractive. It would be preferable someone skinny like a stick, dainty and small frame..

Poor bernice, hope her back recover soon and can exercise again. I saw her video on youtube, she look very pretty and elegant.

Never know botox can slim face, always thought can only reduce the wrinkle.

  22. Um…..Bernice has always been a fat biatch….why even does this make the news?

    1. she’s not fat! and unless you know her personally to comment that she’s a “biatch” then fine but if you don’t then you’re just full of crap just like the media

      1. According to those photos posted on the above links, Bernice does not look fat or chubby at all. However, the photo posted on this article does show that Bernice looks a bit fat (at least her cheeks).

  23. In all honesty, chicks like Natalie Tong who look like they’re on the brink of death quite makes me vomit out my dinner.

    1. So overly skinny people make you puke but you’re not satisfied with ‘fat’ people like Bernice. Interesting…

  24. Good for Bernice to fight the injections! Hopefully she can find some help in regard her back so that she can exercise like she once did. Natural is always better than fake methods.

  25. Bernice is not fat, at least not her body. She just has a bigger built. However, all artistes in Hong Kong are super skinny. Moreover, I guess a person’s face looks “fatter” on camera. So every artiste has to stay super thin in order to look slim and pretty in photos or drama series.

  26. good on her for refusing all that botox, she seems like a confident woman and thats good to see – these days i won’t be surprised with how the industry probably makes everyone feel insecure with looks and having to look this way or that. also wtf at that poll “does bernice need botox” really guys, really? u guys don’t have another poll topic? i dont even

  27. An actress should be cast based on her talent, not based on her weight. Good for her for standing her grounds. I am sure she’s a role model to a lot of people, had she caved, the tabloid headlines will scream she’s sending the wrong message, and her refusal also cause headlines. It’s tough to be a public figure – she’s is caught between a rock and a hard place. Again, good for her for refusing botox!!! Society as a whole should not value an actress simply on her weight and look, but on her talents.

    1. Actually, what i should have said is society should not place value on any person based on look and weight, not just actreeses/actors.

  28. i don’t know if i should say congrats to those other ugly ppl who do not do botox and plastic surgery. being ugly for the rest of their life just to ‘look natural’. if you are really ugly, and there’s technology out there that makes you look better then why not take it? you just have to find urself a better and reliable cosmetic surgeon.

    1. Correct! If they can bear the risks, they can do it.

BTW finding a good and reliable cosmetic surgeon is very important. Some made themselves just look worse.

    2. OMG, you are one shallow sob!!! If people are happy with themselves, who are you to judge? You might think you are pretty or good looking, i bet there will be someone who looks at you and see flaws. NO ONE is perfect. Besides, i rather risk being labeled ugly over having cosmetic surgeries to enhance my look – IF i am happy with who i am. Unnecessary pain, questionable outcome (i.e butchered) or worse, losing my life just to look good.

Google, i am sure you know how to google 🙂 Yes, the chance are small, but it’s a small chance i will not risk.

These are women with money, so they can afford the very best surgeons, going under the knife is no guarantee.

Ok, I’m totally watching this. 2 of my fave actors in the series.
