“Book of Love” Wins China’s Box Office

Chinese romantic comedy Book of Love <北京遇上西雅图之不二情书> has grossed over 300 million RMB as of the end of May 1, winning China’s May Day box office.

Book of Love, a partial sequel to 2013’s Finding Mr. Right <北京遇上西雅图>, sees the return of Tang Wei (汤唯) and Wu Xiubo (吴秀波) in a comedic romance that crosses nations. The movie grossed over 300 million RMB after only three days of release, replacing Disney’s The Jungle Book as the top movie of the month, and earning more than double of the Disney film’s first weekend gross. Grossing 100 million RMB per day, Book of Love has launched a new record for romantic comedies in the Chinese box office.

Directed by Xue Xiaolu (薛晓路), who also helmed Finding Mr. Right, Book of Love stars Tang Wei as a public relations manager at a hotel in Macau. She develops a relationship with Daniel, a realtor based in Los Angeles, after exchanging letters. The movie is critically successful. Critics and netizens alike are praising Book of Love to be a far superior movie than its 2013 predecessor.

“It is not just an average love story. Not only is it entertaining, the story and characters are all well-layered. It is this year’s best romance film!” wrote a reviewer online.

Aside from breaking a record, Book of Love is also on its way to break Finding Mr. Right’s lifetime gross. Finding Mr. Right grossed nearly 560 million RMB by the end of its cinematic run in 2013.

  1. This is actually quite surprising considering RomCom generally do not dominate the Chinese box office.
