Bowie Lam and Fann Wong Star in “Xijiang Garrison”

Starring Bowie Lam (林保怡) and Fann Wong (范文芳), new mainland Chinese drama, Xijiang Garrison <屯戍西疆> is an epic series based on the popular novel of the same name, telling the story of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corp (XPCC). The series will be aired in 2014, the 60th anniversary of the XPCC.

Filming on location at Hami, Xinjiang, Xijiang Garrison also features mainland artists, Ti Jing (叶静), Lian Jianmin (陆剑民), Ma Rui (马睿), and Xiong Xiaowen (熊晓雯). With a top caliber production team, an excellent script, a talented cast, and the support from the locals in Xinjiang, Xijiang Garrison is an ambitious drama that is already hailed as a sure success.

The Xinjiang Production and Construction Corp is an economic and semi-military governmental organization in the Xinjiang region of China. It was formed 58 years ago with goals to develop frontier regions, promote economic development, ensure social stability and ethnic harmony, and consolidate border defense. Since its formation, the XPCC has built farms, towns, and cities, and provided land and work for disbanded military units. In its earlier days, the XPCC focused on settling, cultivating, and developing sparsely populated areas such as the fringes of deserts.

Through the memories of a company commander played by Bowie Lam, Xjiang Garrison tells the story of the daily life, struggles, romance, and the fate of two families through three generations of XPCC.

Antiques as Props

In order to achieve the authenticity of the army from six decades ago, the production team of Xijiang Garrison spared no expense in recreating the history of XPCC. Many of the locations selected for the filming are in fact the original buildings used by the corporation. However, as they were in extremely poor conditions, army barracks and training grounds had to be restored, and ex-army personnel from the era and advisers were brought in to help reconstruct the sites.

While going through some of the buildings, the production team stumbled on furniture from the army personnel and families. Some of this furniture was also moved to the studios as props. Consultants were also brought in to make sure the body gestures, uniforms, ragged clothing, and daily lifestyles were as accurate as possible. The viewers will not only be watching a drama, but they will also witness history in Xijiang Garrison.
