Cecilia Cheung Slammed for Unprofessional Behavior

Cecilia Cheung (張栢芝) has seen a fair share of criticism over her wild personality, poor parenting skills, and even her broken English. Her professionalism is also called into question this week after an industry veteran commented on her negative behavior on the film set and shockingly labelled her as a disgrace for Hong Kong artistes.

Although the public loves to nitpick her personal choices, Cecilia is generally acknowledged for her acting talent. However, her acting career seems to have suffered greatly after a series of ups-and-downs in her family life. Once an award winning actress, in recent years Cecilia has received mostly mixed reviews for her performances, and has even been mocked as worst actress several times.

One of her poorly-received films is 2011’s Legendary Amazons <楊門女將之軍令如山>. Filmed in the same year as her very public divorce from Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒), the movie was supposed to be one of Cecilia’s major comeback projects. Not only did viewers find her performance unsatisfactory, her co-star, veteran artiste Cheng Pei Pei (鄭佩佩), also found her on-set attitude unacceptable.

In a recent episode of Mainland talk show Big Shot <大牌駕到>, Cheng Pei Pei spoke frankly about her experience working with Cecilia. Although she gave recognition to Cecilia’s talent, she finds the younger actress unprofessional. “She had a very bad work attitude. She has disgraced her fellow Hong Kong actors. Perhaps she was going through family problems. However she should not have brought them to the set, and should learn to empathize with the crew members.”

Cheng’s comments immediately ignited backlash from Cecilia’s fans. Some went to Cheng’s Weibo to defend their idol, insisting that Cecilia is a hard-working single mom who does not deserve the criticism. Others showed support for Cheng, applauding her for speaking the truth. Cheng herself briefly addressed the issue on Weibo on June 18, agreeing that she may have said the wrong words though seems to stand by her original sentiments.

  1. Award winning actress? For what? Her voice is horrible and acting is horrible. The only thing she is doing a good job in is taking care of her kids. She spends a lot of time with her kids compare to that Nicholas tse. However I believe those 2 boys will be spoiled.

  2. Cecilia’s attitude on the set of Legendary Amazons may have been less than satisfactory. Cheng Pei Pei of course has the right to say whatever she wants.
However, to badmouth a fellow actress three years later on a talk show is bad form, veteran artiste or not. If there was indeed a problem, the professional thing to do would have been to approach Cecilia and discuss the issue right then and there – not to hold a grudge for three years and then dig history and speak poorly of a fellow artiste on national television.
Cheng Pei Pei is commenting on other people’s attitude, but what kind of example is she herself setting? By not talking to Cecilia about her supposed bad attitude, she didn’t give Cecilia a chance to improve or change, and more importantly, to defend herself. And by bringing it up now, is she trying to make the other person feel bad? There’s nothing Cecilia can do now, and her reputation is on the line whether she speak out or not.
Regardless of what Cheng said is true, she just made herself look petty, childish and unprofessional. Next time a younger artiste has bad attitude on set, tell him or her right away, call it constructive feedback if you like.

    1. While what she commented may be true, this veteran is prolly still sore cos Cecilia didn’t idolise her during the filming. Otherwise, she could’ve phrased her criticism in a more constructive way which allows room for improvement in another person.

      1. Why does Cheng Pei Pei need to sugar coat her remarks? Just call it like it is…bad is bad, good is good…average is average…short, concise and accurate.

  3. Cheng PeiPei doesn’t mince words when it comes to opinions of fellows actors/actresses and døesn’t give standard answers during interviews.

    1. After watch Cheng Pei Pei in Divas on the road. I have new found respect for her. she is not a malicious gossiper. When she is ask for her opinion, she give a honest answer. For Cheng PeiPei to make those comments, Cecilia must have behaved in a unacceptable manner. CPP is too experience a actress to watch everything she want to say. I do believe her.

  4. Poor parenting skills? Who are YOU to judge on that? Each parents have their own sets of rules and parenting style when raising their kids. We cannot say that she is a perfect mother (nobody is a perfect parent), but we certainly cannot judge on her parenting skills.

  5. hi there

    1. aiyoh!
    2. cannot act, cannot even sing.
    3. the only thing to see: hair there! oops

    1. Hahaha… somehow when i think of cc hairy always comes to mind. Wonder if that makes me a pervie. ..

  6. Cheng Pei Pei was a star and reputable actress during her days. Believe that she is the stuff who does not say to bad mouth another (in any case, she is entitled to her opinion). It could hv been that Cecilia’s behaviour has affected the film’s crew quite badly, hence, her comments.

    1. Agree with you, Cheng Pei Pei being a veteran star could have a very different working attitude. Maybe Cecilia Cheung is arrogance and thinks that she is being famous and disrespect Cheng and also distrupted the filming process. I didnt feel that Cheng Pei Pei deliberately bad mouthed Cecilia Cheung, it was during an interview that she voiced out her opinion of Cecilia.

    2. A few words from a veteran actress shouldn’t have any affects on her. No big deal, it’s old news. 😀

  7. When different individuals remark about Cecilia’s parenting skills, poor work habits and poor social interactions with others, that seems to indicate that Cecilia has issues which need to be addressed. Many of us may have one major flaw or two, but with all three flaws and still want to be a star for others to look up to??? She is in the public spotlight and needs to media and create a persona acceptable in all areas.

  8. I was reminded of an old axiom when I read this… “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

    1. only if others have said stated the negatives before you…otherwise, those folks will continue to get away with their negative behaviors…

      1. Which reminds me of another old axiom…
        “two wrongs don’t make a right” 🙂

  9. Cecilia Cheung, Angelica Lee, Crystal Huang. This, my friends, is the pattern of articles these days.

  10. All celebrities endure some form of criticism whether it is negative or positive, it goes with the territory.

However to critique Cecelia on her broken English is sheer ignorance and backward thinking. Hello stupid media and netizens, the last time I checked, Cantonese and mandarin were her first and second languages respectively. What do you donkeys expect from her???> This is beyond ridiculous.

Chinese are always preaching this holier than thou purity and chastity. Why is Cecilia being harped on for scolding her children?. One would think that with such ancient thinking and mentality, the masses would be appreciative that she is scolding her kids. Such backward and blatant hypocrisy. Such ignorance.

Although Cheng Pei Pei is entitled to her opinion, a lot of these older artists expect the younger ones to kiss their geriatric backsides. I have nothing against respect being paid to the veterans, but their expect hero worship from the younger ones, probably bowing down to and being addressed as master and goddesses. These veterans usually have more skeletons in their closets than the younger ones, but, being close to 50 or older, the masses, including the press, worship and adoringly idolize them, so the skeletons stay in the closets. Cheng Pei Pei needs to get over herself.

  11. I would have thought going through a divorce earns a little leeway in terms of being moody when working.

  12. Once she trims her bush, all will be good. Feng shui
