Cecilia Liu, Eddie Peng and Hu Ge in Love Triangle in “Da Mo Yao”

Fans of Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步惊心> can look forward to another sweeping periodic love drama soon. Based on Tong Hua’s <桐华> novel, Da Mo Yao <大漠谣> will feature a popular cast consisting of Cecilia Liu (刘诗诗), Hu Ge (胡歌), Eddie Peng (彭于晏), Fala Chen (陈法拉) and Kristin Tin (田蕊妮). Da Mo Yao’s filming director and production crew are also the same team that created the mega hit drama, Bu Bu Jing Xin.

Synopsis of “Da Mo Yao”

Set in the Han Dynasty, Cecilia Liu plays a “wolf girl” who grew up with a pack of wolves. She was eventually adopted by a Hun and then learnt to write and fight under him. Cecilia’s character lost her adopted father in a rebellion, and then travelled to Chang’an where she met Eddie and Hu Ge’s characters.

Eddie plays a warrior and Hu Ge portrays a disabled gentleman. It was love at first sight for Hu Ge and Cecilia’s characters, but little did they know that Eddie was also in love with Cecilia. Cecilia decided to profess her love for Hu Ge, but Hu Ge rejected her love due to his disability and feelings of inferiority.

Feeling dejected, Cecilia returned to her homeland. Eddie, who was also devoted to Cecilia, followed her back. During the journey, the pair braved dangers together and their romance gradually blossomed.

Fala and Kristin portray Cecilia’s friends, and Fala eventually became the favorite concubine of the emperor. In her plans to make her son to become the crown prince, Fala unscrupulously plotted against Cecilia and Eddie. On the other hand, Eddie and Hu Ge were also oppressed by another powerful force, which put their lives in danger.

Cecilia and Eddie in Steamy Scene

Portraying a couple deeply in love, stills of Cecilia and Eddie in a kissing scene emerged. Cecilia showed her fair shoulders and Eddie flaunted his well-trained body. Embracing each other, the pair had a long and intimate kissing scene.

Aside from Eddie, Cecilia also shared a passionate kissing scene with Hu Ge earlier.

Da Mo Yao has completed its filming and it is expected to air on Hunan TV in a few months’ time.

  1. I cannot wait to see this drama! It seems really interesting and engaging. I love watching Hunan TV dramas.

    1. Me too and I love the photos from the photobooks too. I wonder if this series will be accurate to the novel?? I think there was a novel about it if I remember correctly.

      1. It is written by Tong Hua, same as BBJX. The story is more intimate, smaller scale though.

      2. Oh I remember now since I just checked the info about it.

  2. Maggie Cheung Ho Yee also acted in this series as an empress.

    1. I like Maggie Cheung Ho Yee… too bad she has the reputation of being difficult to work with 🙁

      1. TVBFanatic,
The good actors who are strongly passionate about their craft are often rumored to be difficult to work with. Look at Alex Man, Wong He, and Francis Ng.

These good actors are often principled and don’t just “phone in” their performances. They expect everyone else to do their parts well. It is because of their strong work ethic and high expectations, which when met by people with lesser dedication, may result in building this reputation of being difficult to work with.

      2. I can see why they are difficult to work with if they are experienced actors/actresses. However, I think they should be more understanding to the younger generation who are less experienced and are still learning. As seniors, they should teach and guide them instead of always expecting too much.

    2. I don’t find it ‘bad’. On the contrary, that’s what I respect Maggie as an actress besides her excellent acting.

    3. love maggie… looking forward seing ths. th kissing scene looks steamy. lol

  3. I am looking forward to this one although however much I like Hu Ge he doesn’t quite fit the character description of Meng Jiu. But he is a good actor. I somehow don’t like Eddie Peng’s face but it seems spot on casting and I read he can ignite a passionate scene even with a dead tree. Liu Shi Shi.. seems stuck in her BBJX expression. I am looking forward to Fala. Maggie Cheung is in this as well?

The costumes however is excellent as any Tang Ren productions and the dog is super huge and super cute.

    1. The steamy scene is steamier in the book since it goes beyond kissing. I wonder will it go beyond that and whether will it be censored.

      1. Did you read the book Funn? did they go full blast in the book???

      2. I read a fan translation and they were bathing in the same scene together and yes, he was seduced and they went all the way. She was pregnant before they even married. The book is quite a revelation in the sense theirs is a hot blooded full on relationship.

      3. Oh ok, so they did go full blast. Of course, they would hug and kiss at most but nothing more.

    2. Maggie C as Wei Zi Fu and Crystal Tin as Hong Gu (as stated by DramaWiki).

    3. What was Meng Jiu’s disability?? Was he blind?? I suddenly don’t remember..

      1. I don’t think it was s physical disability right? I don’t remember hearing anything about that…

      2. His legs are weak. Needs a wheelchair but was able to at least stand and walk some with crutches.

      3. Oh ok, thanks for reminding me. No wonder he kept on rejecting LSS’s character.

  4. LSS has the blandest expression in photo shoots.

steamy scene. hah. don’t think china can go very far with that without censorship.

    1. Because she does do well with 1 expression and that is a certain cold arrogance.

    1. what is wrong with Hu Ge?? I am really happy to see him.

    2. Yeah what’s wrong with him? He has the looks and good acting

  5. We complain that TVB series have the same actresses over and over again, but Tangren production seem to only have LSS as lead actress.

The show seems interesting enough, even though neither of the two male leads are a draw for me.

    1. You ALWAYS watch a series for way more than just the cast. The cast is not the only thing in any series.

      1. meant to say, You “should” always watch a series for more than just the cast. The plot, script,etc.. are more important than the cast…

      2. He had some leg disability and frequently used a wheelchair.

      3. I will watch this for Meng Jiu which I always thought was Liu Lian Cheng (but much nicer) and so the original casting was perfect to me, unfortunately Wallace probably turned down the role and so Hu Ge got shifted to this role which he wanted.

      4. I would have loved to see Wallace but am really to see Hu Ge as well. The story sounds good so I would watch it regardless of who is in it.

      5. Hu Ge doesn’t fit the description or maybe the writer went overboard. She basically described Meng Jiu as the single most beautiful but melancholic looking man, EVER. Same as for Fala’s role, so beautiful one stare and you’re in love sort of description.

      6. Well, there are characters that just cannot be portrayed by anyone. For example,in Gu Long’s novel, he goes WAY overboard with Lin Xian Er’s description saying that she is the most beautiful women in the world. Basically, she is just drop dead gorgeous and every guy would love/like her at first sight. In JY novel, Xiang Xiang Gong Zhu is so beautiful that a whole army would just stop to stare at her…Which actress/actor can ever portray those kinds of characters in terms of physical appearance??? I think the writers are overexaggerating. Therefore, I think Hu Ge as Meng Jiu is good enough… Do you think Wallace would have been better?? I don’t think that Wallace would fit it 100% either, but then again who would since I think the character is one that cannot be represented by any actor… The character is too ideal just like Xiang Xiang Gong Zhu and Lin Xian Er.

      7. The role screams for Wallace and he was offered the role first but he declined. Quite a huge uproar from both sides of fans I believe. I understand why he turned down the role. The description made it clear how beautiful and melancholic and fragile the character is and I immediately think of Wallace which was 1st choice I believe. Hu Ge is a good actor but he is not spot on.

      8. In your opinion, Wallace may be spot on, but maybe he is not to others?? We all imagine the characters a bit differently. I personally think He Ge is fit for the character as well and others may think he is spot on as well.

      9. I think Wallace fits the role of Meng Jiu more than Hu Ge. But if I have to choose, I prefer the trio of Eddie, Hu Ge and Shi Shi. Haven’t seen Eddie on screen especially in costume dramas for some time, whereas Wallace is churning out work after work.

      10. Yea, I have not seen Eddie in an ancient series in a long time so it is great to see him, LSS and Hu Ge in a love triangle. I feel bad for Hu Ge’s character though. I think Hu Ge fits the character well too but that is just what I think.

    2. Yes, Wallace was offered the role of Meng Jiu but turned it down because he got offered the lead in Yu Zheng’s Swordsman. It’s too bad because the three would have been the perfect leads for their roles.

      1. Jiayi,
Wouldn’t the role in “Da Mo Yao” be more challenging for Wallace Huo rather than “Swordsman?” Was it a matter of timing in which he agreed to film “Swordsman” first?

      2. I wonder the same thing but I am guessing it is because it is a JY novel??

      3. In a way he did commit to Swordsman but the truth is I suppose he is sick of those melancholic sad handsome characters. Whilst Da Mo Yao may look challenging, it is not a leading role although it is a very memorable role. Compared to XAJH, he is the bona fide lead, in a wuxia series he has never done before. Nothing to do with JY novel, but rather if he did not do Liu Lian Cheng, I would think he might be tempted with DMY. But LLC is similar and he just wants to do something else. And between DMY where the lead is a woman and Swordsman where the lead is him, if I were him I too will choose Swordsman.

      4. According to the time frame, it appears that Wallace was already “committed” to DMY before he got offered the role in Yu Zheng’s Swordsman. Because of his good relationship with Tangren, there was no written contract at the time, but more a verbal agreement between him and Karen (CEO of Tangren).

When Yu Zheng contacted Wallace, Yu Zheng didn’t know Wallace was already committed (according to Yu Zheng’s weibo). And he also later wrote that an agreement with the other party (mind you, Karen and Yu Zheng are enemies since the TVB days) was made and that they were really understanding. Karen also wrote on her weibo stating that she talked to Wallace and wished him the best of luck in his role in Swordsman.

As Funn stated, being a lead in the Swordsman vs. a 2nd male lead in DMY, it was obvious which would be the better choice. And most of Wallace’s fans were happy and overjoyed because they didn’t want him to be Meng Jiu in DMY.

These was all speculations of what happened from the fans that have been following the making of DMY….

      5. Also, the filming of DMY got delayed from it’s original filming date because of “cast change” and it took them a month to find a “replacement” supposingly for Meng Jiu but it was difficult to find somebody to accept the role so Hu Ge “fought” for it.

      6. “but it was difficult to find somebody to accept the role so Hu Ge “fought” for it.”

Why? What’s wrong with the role?

      7. I was wondering the same thing. What is wrong with the role of Meng Jiu?

      8. Nothing was wrong with the role, matter of fact, I thought it was a really good and meaty role.

The situation with Hu Ge supposingly “fought for the role”. It was speculated since the 2nd half of last year(2011) that Hu Ge would be leading the production (since it’s a Tangren production and the rule was that one of Tangren’s artist HAVE to be lead-so that means it’s either Hu Ge or LSS).

It was hinted all along that Hu Ge would be Huo Qu Bing (male lead) and the leading actress was still unknown (LSS was not mentioned to be in DMY at all because she just led the production of BBJX). It was also hinted that they would find a famous actress to star opposite Hu Ge.

Hu Ge had an open weibo chat with fans stating that he would rather play Meng Jiu because that would be more of a challenge for him (playing a disabled character), when fans told him that they wanted him they preferred him to be HQB he responded by “if you want me to be HQB, I’ll be HQB”. In which it believed he would play that role to begin with. In that weibo chat, Hu Ge also hinted that he will be looking foward to working with a “brother” again, so fans speculated it would be Wallace.

End of 2011, beginning of 2012 the female lead was announced and it was LSS. Fans were excited, FINALLY a pairing of Hu Ge and LSS and Karen’s ideal cast of Hu Ge, LSS, and Wallace (not confirmed just speculations).

Just before the filming date, the cast changed. One of the lead dropped out, thus the production got delayed. So rumors went flying about who will be the new male lead (supposingly Meng Jiu). Tangren only dropped hints that the male lead would be a famous movie star and fans will find out the day of the Conference. Fans took note of the word “MALE LEAD” and got worried, that the roles will be switching and that Hu Ge won’t be HQB, and the other guy will be lead instead.

When I said Hu Ge “fought”, he said in an interview that he and Karen spent an hour talking and trying to convince Karen that he should play Meng Jiu instead of HQB. Nothing wrong with the role, it’s just that if Karen wanted a suitable famous actor to boost the production, the actor will not likely accept a disabled 2nd male lead role. That’s why the roles were switched (as specualated by hardcore fans of Tangren and DMY-the novel).

      9. Sorry if the above doesn’t make sense, I was typing as fast as I could, so expect grammar and typing errors 🙂 LOL…

      10. Thanks for all of the info JiaYi! You really followed this production very closely. I personally think that Hu Ge will be great as Meng Jiu and can’t wait to see it. When will it air?? I think I will check the info now.

      11. Unless things have changed, the last time I’ve heard was that SARFT have not even approved of this series being aired yet. May even be banned because the series was accused of de-faming a historical Chinese figure HQB. Unless Tangren changed the ending/outcome of HQB from the novel it may never be broadcast.

After the press conference, only several official pictures were released. There after, all the pictures we’ve seen were leaked by fans.

Whether the series get broadcast is still up in the air 🙁

      12. Oh gosh, so many restrictions in China… That is the problem when you have real historical figures in the series. I wonder if they did change the series ending for the character then?? Was his ending in the novel accurate to history then??

      13. No, the the ending in the novel was the opposite. Tong Hua gave HQB a happy ending with a wife and children, while I think in history HQB died at a very young age.

That’s why Tangren may have to change the ending so SARFT would approve them to broadcast the series.

      14. If that is the case, then they may have to do so or else how would they air the series?? I am sure many are waiting to see it…

  6. How on earth did Fala Chen and Kristin Tin manage to sneak themselves into this Tangren big production? Even as supporting characters/villainesses.

Maggie I can see because she is a darn good actress; but these two? Aiya

    1. Many hong kong actors and actresses do get to play supporting roles in big budget productions from Tang Ren or Yu Zheng. I guess, because they are more known internationally than most China faces, and recently there was news about HK artistes being “beautiful bargains”?
Like Michelle Yim and Lawrence Ng are playing supporting roles in the current airing TangRen production “Xuan Yuan Sword”.

      1. If they are known in HK, they are often offered roles in big and grand China productions. That happened way back in the days too so it is not something new at all. We may not like Fala and Kristin, but maybe they have connections and know some of the producers/directors in China??

    2. Fala landed the role mid-way through the series. I recalled reading somewhere that the producer chose Fala for the role because she resembled the actress who had the role first. That actress got cut because she was plagued with plastic surgery rumors.

In my opinion, Fala look nothing like her. I guess it was a bit of luck since Fala is quite popular in HK. So, some might know about her in China.

      1. That news sounds familiar and I do not remember the name of the actress either.

      2. Her name was Pan Shi Qi 潘时七. Putting the plastic surgery aside, she does look good for the role. Another reason why she was cut was that her acting was terrible.

      3. Oh yea, that is her… thanks JiaYi! Yea, if they cut her out due to bad acting than that is good. It’s not like Fala’s acting is good, but it is probably better than Pan Shi Qi’s.

      4. I agree that she and Fala don’t look alike at all…

  7. Yes being waiting so long for a series that hu ge and cecilia play a couple but it’s more with Eddie.

  8. I too Can’t wait for this series! I am excited to see this pairing.

  9. Can we have other lead actress other than Liu Shi Shi. I used to like her. But, she’s everywhere now.

    1. It all depends on which production company you’re following. If you follow Tangren, you’ll most likely see Hu Ge and Liu Shi Shi. If you follow Yu Zheng’s production, you’ll most often see Yuan Shan Shan and Chen Xiao. Production companies use their own artists to be leads in their series..nothing abnormal about it 🙂

      1. I definitely prefer to see Liu ShiShi or Hu Ge everywhere than Yuan Shan Shan and Mickey He.

      2. I really like Hu Ge and LSS so don’t mind seeing them everywhere… But I would love to see others as well since there are soo many other great actors and actresses these days. But then again, when we watch TVB series we constantly see the same old people over and over again too.

    2. Umm if they are famous then they are everywhere. It’s seems to me that you only seem to watch tangled production. They don’t have anyone else which means liu shi shi is going to be the lead.
You cant just say that you once liked her and then now she is big and getting more fans and being in more dramas you suddenly lost interest in her.
You’re saying you aren’t sick of seeing the same tvb fadans

  10. LSS is actual pretty and can act, I don’t mind to see everywhere 😀

    1. Not everyone thinks LSS is pretty and can act well. Many complained about her in BBJX.

      1. I agree. She is pretty but plain in a way. BUt there is a certain aloof elegance about her. Her acting improved a lot, thanks to BBJX but a lot also doesn’t mean she is great. She is to me an average mediocre actress. To some she is still pretty terrible. I could imagine is Betty Sun Li played Ruoxi, it would have been sensational.

      2. I think Liu shi shi acting is good and compared to some actress from tvb she is better than good.

      3. I think her acting is ok but not so great yet but she is better than a lot of the current TVB fadans.

      4. That is your opinion and once again, talent is in the eye of the beholder.

      5. LSS’s aloofness translates onscreen pretty well which is why i can’t feel much for her character. Her acting is quite stiff. And I do watch many tangren productions. they have other actresses but whether or not they’re willing to bet on newcomers is a different story.

remember, LSS is once a newcomer. Why not give other a golden chance and instead dry out LSS? who has been working non-stop as the LEAD in every drama produced by them?

ping0, that compliment is taking it too far.

    2. Agree with HeTieShou, it depends on how the person sees it. In my opinion LSS is way better than, Charmaine, Myolie, Linda, Fala, kate, and those other over used one. She just gets better and better in each series I watch, it can be the rolls she has been cast onto, or just her present on screen.

    3. LSS is bland but has a gracious charm about her. However, she can’t seem to convey emotions well at all. Pretty mediocre compared to a lot of other actresses.
