Characters’ Fates in “The Confidant” Revealed thumbnail

Even though only half of The Confidant <大太監> has been aired, viewers are already speculating the ending for various characters. With reports of two endings to be aired and leaked spoilers, the characters’ fates in the drama are becoming more apparent.

It is already widely reported that there will be an alternate ending revolving around palace maid, Sin Yung (Nancy Wu 胡定欣). There are currently three scenarios floating around. Sin Yung may end up murdered, remarried, or a nun.

As the most loyal servant to Empress Dowager Cixi (Michelle Yim 米雪), Li Lianying’s (Wayne Lai 黎耀祥) speculated fate is to stand by her until her death, and will continue to live in the palace until he dies. However, there is also a more historically accurate ending in which he will be murdered after leaving the palace at an old age. The viewers will most likely see the more sentimental ending showing Lianying’s loyalty to Cixi, as the second version requires the series to get into more detail at the end.

Empress Dowager Ci’an (Maggie Siu 邵美琪) will lose everything in her power struggle with Empress Dowager Cixi. Ci’an will become insane and most likely end up “imprisoned” in the cold palace. Although according to history, Ci’an was the co-de-facto ruler until she, despite her good health, died of a sudden stroke in 1881.

An Dehai (Raymond Cho 曹永廉), close confidant of Empress Dowager Cixi, will lose his head. Later on in the series, An Dehai will become blatantly arrogant and lawless. He will also constantly turn Cixi against Prince Kung (Cheung Kwok Keung 張國強).

As to the actual reason why An Dehai was executed, history has it that An, the most feared grand eunuch of the imperial court, was beheaded for leaving the palace (eunuchs were forbidden to travel out of the Forbidden Palace without permission). It was also said that the incident was carried out by a province governor after being hinted by Prince Kung who had the support of Ci’an.

Princess Wo Shek (Aimee Chan 陳茵媺) and Yiu Sheung Hei  (Raymond Wong 黃浩然) will part ways. The princess will marry a general far away at the border of China, and live a life of a commoner there after. Sheung Hei will finally fulfill his family’s dream of becoming the imperial doctor.

I feel so bad for Raywond Wong’s character…he did great on episode 15.

    2. Ric says:

I don’t know if this is really related to the article but ********SPOILER********what happened to Raymond Cho after episode 13? The episode ended with him almost dying and then he isn’t mentioned until episode 15, where he just magically reappears. Did I miss something?

    3. Anu says:

Oh what about Power Chan character Sam shun?

      • exoidus says:

Yeah I was asking the same question myself. He will prolly die for some reason. Too bad he has become my fav. in TC.

      • GaryGlitter says:

I think he may end up murdered, married, or a monk.

        • myra-belle says:

The best bet would be “murdered”. I can’t see him given a love interest whom he could marry. And why should an eunuch become a monk? Wouldn’t it be better to leave the palace and live as a commoner?

    4. Mlove says:

Its must be crazy living in the king dynasty. I feel sorry for the eunuchs and the maids. I hope Wayne, Power and Nancy will have a good ending.

    5. Poppy says:

I am currently watching this great drama. However, I missed the first 6 episodes and only started watching from episode 7 which was about Wayne Lai riding the bicycle. Would some very kind person be kind enough to tell me briefly what the first 6 episodes was about. Was it about Wayne and how he came to live and work at the palace or was it about all the other enuochs?

      • myra-belle says:

In the first few episodes, we see some short flashbacks revealling that Wayne’s character chose to become eunuch to receive a good amount of money for his family, consisting of a gambling father, a mother asking for forgiveness for the said father, an older brother with wife and later on, Wayne brought up more money to save his younger brother from the same fate. We saw Wayne trying to live a rather peaceful life with the other eunuchs and maids of a consort played by Selena Li whose fate was the main theme of the first 5 episodes, I believe.

The profile is too toned down.

        • miriamfanz says:

What would you like to see in my posts?
I am planning to have a seperate post that details the political happenings during her reign.

        • Funn Lim says:

I did read your post. That is your post? Which is why I said too toned down. Wiki will be fuller but it may be a bit biased I admit but it is known fact of many things she did. All I can say if I believe she was genuine during Tong Zhi but at the end of his life, as the famous (is it maxim) saying say Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. By the end of it why didn’t those who matters just knife her to death? Because each by that time has own interest to safeguard. In its way the empire fell due to selfishness and corruption, all starting at the top. Guangxu was dynamic it seems, he wanted to change things which she disagreed and in the end he became one of the most pitiful emperor, under house arrest till his death. And why? Because of her. Your posting is not to say too brief but too favourable or rather too in line with the series. The series did not tone down her actions, it probably rewrote them. She’s no saint, Wu Ze Tian was no saint, Empress Dou and many others were no saint but the question lies in their actions after they were in power. In that respect Cixi liked where she was and did everything to ensure she stayed that way, disregarding everybody else. Therefore I feel she was shortsighted. The empire was weakened, probably near death but perhaps still salvagable for maybe a decade more perhaps if she had laid down genuine foundation of reform and change.
