Charmaine Sheh Learns to Take a Break and Slow Down in Life

It has been 16 years since Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) joined the entertainment industry after joining the 1997 Miss Hong Kong Pageant. Since then, she had always possessed a workaholic attitude. After winning the TV Queen title in 2006, her career status further cemented as she became TVB’s Top Sister. However, after discontinuing her TVB  management contract in 2011, Charmaine expressed that she is exposed to a new philosophy in life. Taking a filming break for the last 6 months, Charmaine enjoys her life and tries to make the most out of her free time.

“It’s a new start, and I am learning to live life. Women truly need to have good maintenance of oneself instead of abusing youth. I’m now beginning to understand the meaning behind this, so I take breaks from work and try to manage my time well.”

Charmaine explained that she now only accepts dramas when she is interested in the plot, and she only attends events she like. “I didn’t mean that I had no freedom in the past. It’s just that before, I always carried a “work work work!’ attitude. But now, I have learned when to stop and take a break.” Was Charmaine unable to choose jobs she liked back in TVB? She replied, “I could choose, but I didn’t want to upset others. I am friends with all the producers, which resulted in continued work on a non-stop basis. There was one year in which I had to film over one hundred episodes. It was very scary.”

Acting served as a very good chance to gain life experience. Charmaine expressed, “An actor is actually rich in experience. Take myself for example, I have filmed around 50 dramas, in which I portrayed 50 different characters. It’s almost like I lived life 50 times. And with my own life altogether, I’ve turned into someone who has experienced a lot.”

Besides the heavy workload that caused Charmaine to lack sleep for many years, her mother had once suffered a life-threatening disease. “It was then that I realized the world is not only about work. There are so many other things. God gives you the chance to enjoy family happiness. If you don’t cherish it, then you might not have access to it next time.”

The media has always been interested in Charmaine’s love life. Regarding the constant circulation of rumors, she expressed, “I am just an actress, and I have my own personal life. I cannot change the way I live because of other people.” When will Charmaine find her other half? “It’s all up to fate, just like the birth of my nephew. At first, my brother and his wife never considered having a child, and they spent ten years without one. However, one day they called to tell me that my sister-in-law was pregnant. For situations like this, I feel like everything is fated. I believe I will find my other half, and I am currently on the lookout for someone good. We need to be able to understand each other, because a relationship lasts for life.”

Charmaine mentioned that women need to have good maintenance of oneself. What are some of her skincare remedies? She laughed and said, “I wash off my makeup no matter how tired I am. That’s the most important thing. I have a pet peeve about my face being unclean, so I repeat all procedures four times. I also have sensitive skin, so I avoid trying too many different new products. I continue to use the ones I like.”

  1. She’s gonna find herself a husband. It’s about time. Career will always be there, but having a baby there a time limit for that.

    1. There are advanced fertility treatments that would make it possible to give birth to a healthy baby even though she is getting up in age.

  2. I must say I didn’t like her in the beginning of her career because her acting was so stiff. I think I started liking her after Return of the Cuckoo and every series after that her acting has been superb. I loved every series she’s been in.

Correction though…she didn’t win first place in the pageant. Wasn’t she in third place if I remember correctly?

    1. I agree she’s pretty and she’s a relatively good actress. But some of the series she was in really sucked, like When Heaven Burns, for instance. The storyline and script were horrible and she was so pretentious in it. Not only her, every other actor (Bowie Lam, Moses Chan, Maggie Shiu) was horrible. I could’ve given that series a miss.

      1. It is a personal choice …… “When Heaven Burns”. I enjoyed it very much.

      2. Also I think it was Charmaine Sheh’s best performance so far.

  3. I’ve always admired Charmaine because I think she’s very smart and pragmatic in her life. I’m glad that she can unwind nowadays, because it’s not healthy to work non-stop.

  4. Of course she can safely relax now and does not need to worry especially over money matters now that she’s earning more than enough to support her. She’s wise, too, to take it easy and enjoy the fruits of her hard labour. Maybe she can start lookeing for a nice man now and begin seriously to start a family. That would sound perfect then.

    1. She needs to think for her future family too since when was money ever enough? Which is part of the reason why many who are way richer than her still continue to work.It depends how you live and how you spend…Earning money is a pain, but spending it is fast…

      1. But it is true that she should learn to enjoy life and relax instead of just working all the time.. At least she has a job that she likes and is making big bucks too. UNlike many others who don’t earn much and/or do a job that they dislike…

  5. I really like that photo of her used in this article. As a fan of hers, I am glad that she is now slowing down and resting more! It is important to take care of one’s health regardless of being famous or not. I think it is important for the actor/actress to appreciate and like the plot because if an actor/actress didn’t like it, I feel like they won’t be able to portray as well as they would liked it. But that depends, I think.

  6. It is about time for Charmaine Sheh to think about her second career ……….. get a good husband and perhaps start a family. I think Charmaine likes children. She was holding Janet and Timmy Hung’s new born baby girl in a photo posted on her TVB Blog.

  7. I like watching Charmaine Sheh because she is pretty and versatile. She looks pretty in both modern and ancient drama series.

She worked really hard to achieve her goals. She did not want to get rich by getting a wealthy husband at her prime time (when she was young). She knew that her voice was weak, but worked very hard to improve it by reciting newspapers and books. Eventually she was able to portray a radio station DJ impressively in “When Heaven Burns”. Her acting is matured.

  8. I love what she says in interviews, and she looks nice and relaxed in that picture. Also admire her as a working woman, particularly her money-savvy ways, and interpersonal relations skills.
Not to mention I have enjoyed watching her since I was a kid, and hope she comes back in a good production(MITP was a boring watch I’m sad to say…)
I wish her luck in finding her Mr Right.

  9. I’m not a fan of Charmaine’s acting (or any of the recent TVB actresses for that matter), but I have to hand it to her for having a good head on her shoulders. I think taking things slow is exactly what she needs to mature as an actress. With less pressure to focus on “work”, she can pick out a good script and invest her time into the acting aspect of things.

  10. Charmaine is slow to realise that we all need to pamper ourselves. I have been doing it all the time. She’s wasted some of her best youth …. ha ha ha
