Chilam Cheung Has An Incurable Disease In “Return of the Cuckoo”?

Two teaser trailers for the romantic film Return of the Cuckoo: The Movie <十月初五的月光> has been released. The upcoming movie, which is a sequel to the popular TVB drama of the same name, was a household success when it aired in Hong Kong in 2000, achieving an average of 36 rating points during its broadcast.

To support the film’s release, TVB will rebroadcast the original series on its main channel TVB Jade, airing every Saturday on midnight starting October 17. The film will open in theaters on November 12.

Return of the Cuckoo: The Movie reportedly takes place after the original television drama, when Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) meet again after being apart for 15 years. Most of the original cast members have returned for the sequel, including a new character played by Joe Chen (陳喬恩), who plays a mute.

Fans were filled with nostalgia and excitement when the teaser trailers were released, which had the drama’s classic theme song “Wishing Kwan Well” <祝君好> playing in the background. Seeing Chilam riding into the streets of Macau again have given fans’ fond memories of the classic TV series.

However, many fans were shocked to hear Chilam talk in the teaser trailers, leading to hot online discussions about what the sequel could possible be about. In the original drama, Chilam plays Chor Gor Gor, a boy who lost his ability to speak after getting physically abused by his mother. He was later adopted by QE, played by Nancy Sit (薛家燕), who has a daughter Kwan-ho, played by Charmaine. Chor Gor Gor and Kwan-ho fall in love, but Chor Gor Gor believes he is too unworthy for her. Kwan-ho later marries Szeto Lai-shun, played by Steven Ma (馬浚偉).

As seen in the trailers, the film will probably be about Chor Gor Gor and Kwan-ho reuniting, possibly even ending up together as a couple. Chor Gor Gor is also shown to have the ability to talk again. But these surprises have raised several questions: What happened to Szeto Lai-shun? How come Chor Gor Gor can talk again?

A netizen revealed that the sequel is actually about Kwan-ho dealing with the death of her husband Szeto Lai-shun, who was killed in an accident. Another netizen said that Chor Gor Gor will have an incurable disease.

So what will the sequel really be about?

  1. If I recall correctly, Chilam’s “Chor Gor Gor” regained his ability to speak towards the end of the series. Since the movie is a ‘sequel’ that is taking place 15 years later, it only makes sense that he can talk?

  2. Chor Gor Gor had regain his ability to talk in the series back then. The doctor that cured Cho Gor Gor was recommended by Szto Lai Sun and the first word Man Cho said was ‘Kwan Ho’.Hope this series would bring them back together with a happy ending or it will kinda be a waste of time…

  3. If people are surprised when they hear Chor gor gor speak, they must haven’t watched the series well since he already regained his ability to speak in the series.

I really want to know how they will explain Chamaine’s situation, since she was married to Steven Ma’s character PLUS she had (if i remebered it correctly) 2 children. Where did they go?

  4. Generally the sequel will never be as good as the original. Everything will be different. The most disappointing thing about the sequel is that, they won’t include all of the original cast.
They will never bring back the original cast memebers such as Steven ma, Lau Dan and Mannor Chan, Sherming Yiu who acted as Michael Tong’s girlfriend and Chan Kar Yee, who acted as Kwok fung’s wife. Plus, if they are really planning on making a sequel, they should’ve make it a TV series instead of turning it into a movie.
