Chilam Cheung’s Massive Popularity Causes Safety Scare at Mall Event

Chilam Cheung (張智霖) was forced to cut short his appearance at a promotional event after his massive fan base resorted to dangerous tactics to to get a glimpse of their popular idol.

Chilam gained many new fans after his stint on Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄2> as charming playboy Captain Cool. He even achieved a social media milestone on today, having gathered over 5 million followers on his Weibo account. To celebrate, Chilam rewarded his fans with a candid photo and thanked them for their support, saying that he will return the love by working even harder.

Recently, Chilam made a scheduled appearance at a mall event in Chengdu, China. Thousands of fans rushed over to meet their idol, filling up the entire venue. Many of them arrived hours ahead to reserve the best spots, and were ready with posters and light boards to show their support.

To ensure safety, dozens of security guards accompanied Chilam as he made his way towards the stage. Fans immediately surrounded him and kept him in place, their arms raised to snap photos and many reached out to shake his hands. Some even risked their own safety, climbing onto the tall stage setup to get a better look. Despite the dangerous situation, Chilam remained calm and maintained a smile on his face as he greeted everyone.

Due to the size of the crowd and other safety concerns, organizers unfortunately decided to halt the event. They later provided security escort to accompany Chilam to the airport. Unwilling to give up, many fans hired cars and followed behind. Always friendly and appreciative, Chilam complied with all fan requests while waiting for his flight and patiently took photos with everyone. Afterwards, airport security helped divert the crowd and escorted him safely to the gate.

Chilam later posted a message on Weibo, noting his disappointment with the canceled event. “Fans in Chengdu, you are very, very, very, enthusiastic and supportive! I was also very excited to be able to meet all of you today. I know that many of you waited for a long time to see me but the raffle segment was cut short due to safety concerns. It cannot be helped, though it was a little disappointing. Hopefully I will soon have another chance to go to Chengdu to meet everyone. Next time I hope I will be able to sing for all of you! Thank you!”

  1. Happy for Chilam! He really looked very handsome, smart and flirtatious in TITS 2. His portrayal of Jayden was very successful. I love Jayden myself!

    1. I love Chilam’s voice in drama series, very clear, right tone (not too high and not too low), and articulate in words. His English was very good too, best among all the pilots in TITS 2.

      1. Agree! I get so sick of these actors/actresses who jumble up their Cantonese with lazy tones…when Cantonese is their native language!

Glad Chilam is getting the fame he deserves.

      2. agree sometimes even francis mumbled out his lines but chilam has tr perfect voice and awesome looks! love captain cool a lot! jayden is fantastic!

chilam’s popularity is much more deserved than laughing’s popularity a few years ago which was only hyped by the bad tvb! at least we know chilam’s is real because he doesn’t have tvb backing him!

      3. sometimes even francis mumbled out his lines
        ——————————————————–
That is the reason why I did not like to watch Francis Ng. He mumbles a lot in his dialogues. He is okay when he talks like a senior or mentor, but not as a lover.

      4. Yeah, now that u point that out, i realise his voicd is very smooth, easy on the ears..

      5. Yes his English is much better than the others. I’m still surprised at Kenneth Ma’s atrocious English since he lived in Canada and graduated from university. Chi Lam on the other hand only lived in Australia for less than 5 years and didn’t graduate from university. Myolie’s English was not bad actually. In any case, worst English award in TITS2 goes to Ron and Francis. Still laughing at Ron’s “peace” (which was meant to be “please”). I must say

  2. chilam is perfect! love chilam and jayden a lot! love his new triumph themesong too so much better than eason chan!

  3. Even not the best actor (he is not a TVB management-contract artist), I hope he will get the “Most Favourite Actor” award this year.

    1. tvb won’t give chilam that award because chilam isn’t tvb contracted. the award might go to any of those in the anniversary series such as moses or wayne beause tvb is polictics.

  4. Puleez, Chilam isn’t all that hot or good looking and he certainly looks his age (btw, that’s a bad picture of him). He’s just lucky to have played that cool playboy pilot in TITS2 which revived his career.

    1. agreed on that he is lucky to be given the chance to play this well written character but you can’t deny his effort and skills for portraying that character (mr cool) convincingly.

      1. it’s an easy role for any actor as long as he’s ok looking, women automatically swoon over playboy types in uniforms esp smart pilot uniforms. Anyone can play this role like Ruco, Bosco, kevin just to name some. I’m not sure if his character was well written though, cos i read alot of negative comments too.

      2. It is not an easy job for an actor to act Captain Cool. Chilam acted with class and poise, and not like a cheap, dirty and flirtatious pilot.

    2. I have to agree with you! Not that I have anything against Chilam, but he and his role as Mr. Cool are a bit overrated. He really wasn’t that convincing as a playboy, I think women just swoon over his dimples and as a result, lose all evaluative power. The most natural actor in TITS 2, and also the one who spoke the best English, was the guy who played Elena Kong’s husband (they later divorced).

      1. You meant Patrick Dunn? Patrick Dunn’s English is pretty good, but he still pronounced one word incorrectly in the drama series. He said “telephony” as “telephone-nee”. The proper pronunciation should be “tuh-lef-uh-nee”.

I did not hear any mispronunciation in Chilam’s dialogues in English.

Myolie Wu’s English is pretty good, too, but she said “maintenance” incorrectly in the live show when the finale was aired. She pronounced it as “maintain-nance”, instead of “meyn-tuh-nuhns”.

      2. Thank you. When we speak English, of course we have to pronounce the words correctly. Right?

      3. @sandcherry, you’re so conceited that sarcasm’s lost on you lmao.

      4. I am NOT so conceited. I NEVER said that I speak perfect English, but I respect people who speak perfect English. When we speak English, are we not supposed to speak English with the proper pronunciation? Mispronunciation is not the same as speaking English with an accent.

    3. Couldn’t have agreed more. Both CLC and that king Francis Ng are sooooo overrated and perhaps HK audiences are very desperate or else why would they call them great? ahaha…lol…LUCKY is the word. When you are luck enough to play an admiracle and interesting character, anyone will shine or salty fish becomes alive again ahaha lol…

      1. EXACTLY, but i guess a big majority of ppl just love CLC n Francis Ng. haha I for one have always thought both are just way overrated esp big potato head Francis Ng. haha…

    4. lol, Chilam helped to create the character, Jayden. Luck is certainly on his side, but he also worked hard on his performance.

  5. Actually I was wondering for quite some time how come TVB does not really promote him that well… Don’t think he ever got a TVB award right? Glad and happy for Chilam to finally have the limelight which his other half already have during her prime. 🙂

    1. its not that tvb didnt promoted him well,he has done many memorable roles for tvb in the past, but this time the playboy pilot image fits him very well plus the hype for tits2 have pushed his popularity to another level i think.

      1. Really? My favorite series of him is “Return of the Cuckoo” where he played a mute.

      2. yeh,in ripling blossom where he play as a sushi chef is also decent. its a very funny serie.

      3. Rippling blossom was rubbish, it was also the series responsible for making me dislike chilam’s acting cos it was very irritating to see a 40yr old man trying to act cute like a teenager.

      4. @krize150, his role as the mute in ‘Return of the Cuckoo’ (though I’m not a fan of Charmaine) is also the most memorable to me. The song he sang is so sad and poignant.

    2. agree i don’t remember much of chilam’s past series since tvb never promoted him but glad that chilam finally able to breakthrough with jayden koo and somehow able to be more successful than francis who is the pillar of triumph series. that’s a great achievement.

      1. I think the word never promoted should be used sparingly. Everytime he is back with TVB he is the lead in the series. I can name 2 and he was lead in both. There are many more, lead each time. What does promoting him mean? Isn’t it enough he has the lead and all the series he was lead in was considered promoted series? How much more promoted must he be? In TVB’s prospectus? Like you said, he is not a contracted artiste. For a non contracted artiste, he is doing exceptionally well.

      2. “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Cheung”

Look at the list under TVB. He is the lead in all those series from what I can remember.

      3. I agree with Funn.

The word ‘never promoted’ should really be used sparingly.

Putting ‘never promoted’ together with Chilam is so wrong when it comes to TVB.

When Chilam was still a TVB actor back in the 90s, he was very promoted by TVB. He was casted as lead or co-lead in all the series he was in. Heck, he was Guo Jing in ROCH93. That’s a sign of promotion enough.

But, in later period, he was not with TVB anymore. At least, I don’t think he’s a managed artist or even has an artist contract with TVB. I think he just has a per-series contract. At that time, he chose his project himself (or his management company chose for him). He was in movies and mainland series and doubled up as a singer. He’s off the hands of TVB by then. But, whenever he filmed for TVB, he still get lead roles.

      4. If I recall correctly, he was lead actor for quite a number of series – sadly not outstanding. Maybe because of his baby-face look – it’s difficult to take him seriously.
However, now that he’s in his 40s (and with the role of Jayden which seems to suit his looks), he has finally gained most women’s attention.

      5. Younger generations don’t really remember Chilam, his golden years were all before the birth of his son, after having a son he just decided to focus more on family. 2-3 years after stepping into the industry, he was given a role by TVB in Legend of the Condor Heroes as Guo Jing (While Gallen Lo is a supporting actor ), he was definitely very famous back then because of this role. Then he got offered to act with Cold Blood Warm Heart etc, all very high-rated series. His prime time was when he acted as Chor Gor Gor (My favorite…). These are all very old series, mainly 90s, so its not surprising that many people don’t know him. He got managed badly by Wong Kar Wai’s company after that. Thanks to TITS2, his career was revived. Never under full contract with TVB but TVB did give him a lot of chances to shine. TVB never promoted him well was expected tho, since he is not managed directly by TVB.

      6. Like many said, Chilam’s prime time is the early 90’s. He was quite popular with his duet Modern Love Story. His first leading role in LOCH ’94 gained him popularity and securing him a role in CBWH, a grand production. Chilam was considered the lead over Louis and Gallen there. So, yes, he was promoted by TVB. Chilam was not a contracted artist, so he took some time to explore films and Mainland series. But, he still kept a good relationship with TVB that’s why he usualy gets lead roles.

Chilam’s career has slowed down in the past few years for whatever reasons. Captain Cool pretty much revived his career again. Sometimes, it’s all about luck and the role, lol He deserves it though.

  6. wayne lai is only supporting actor material who was crinegworthy in bullet brain. he will fade to background if you put him next to captain cool.

    1. Why not let him be Captain Cool? Minus Fala and the love story but a pilot with an attitude. I think he can do it. As much as you like to think he is only supporting, etc, I know of many people who switch on the TV because Wayne Lai is headlining the series, much like Bobby and some of the old timers. Granted, Captain Cool is popular with the younger generation but there are many who abandoned the series half way even with Captain Cool in it. Same dilemma as Bullet Brain except Bullet Brain has terribly written characters. Face it; Wayne is very popular. One very badly written character does not make him a bad actor. Great actor can make bad series once in a while.

    2. Please be respectful. Both Wayne and Chilam are good actor.. Wayne can def. pull off Captain Cool and why not as he was pretty cool in FH3 IMO.

    3. With all due respect, I don’t think Wayne is that bad, but I don’t think he was good in FH3 either. Wayne can be a hit or miss sometimes and he hs trouble potraying professionals. He’s best in rough characters such as in RB and TGC2.

    4. The love story and playboy character is what make Jayden stand out. He is not just a typical playboy, but a charming playboy who take time to understand and capture a girl’s heart. His character pretty much went downhill after the second half of the series. Jayden was well developed until the plot makes him fall in love with Holiday.

I honestly don’t think Wayne can pull the playboy image. If he is casted in TITS2, he’ll be a duplicate of Sam’s character. But that doesn’t make Wayne a bad actor. I don’t find ANY actors/actresses in TVB are good in EVERY roles.

    5. Different people are simply more suitable to play different roles. Your comparison is a bit baseless. Why not put Chilam in Wayne’s Rosy Business role, or Wayne’s Journey to the West role, and we’ll soon see Chilam fade to the background as well because he’s not as good an actor and not half as versatile as Wayne. Rather than comparing the two and insisting on thinking one is better than the other, why can’t we just appreciate their differences and realize that they’re both good actors in their own rights?

  7. Above pic of Chilam is not so convincing his face is so chubby like a fatty boy. Lately he has been putting on weight perhaps he is happy with his new company.

      1. Chilam does not look good in every photo, but he looked gorgeous as Jayden in TITS 2.

  8. Wowwwwwwww happy for JC u know he deserves such recognition n hes good looking as well!

  9. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. To be honest, his pilot character does not interest me and i find him ugly with his high forehead and bug eyes.
