Daniel Wu Takes Hiatus to Mourn Mother’s Death

Daniel Wu (吳彥祖) will be taking a hiatus from the entertainment industry to mourn his mother’s death. He will spend more time with his family in the United States during this time of grief.

Daniel’s mother, 77-year-old Diana Ting Wu, passed away on May 22, 2014. An obituary of her death was published in the San Francisco Chronicle on June 1. Leading a distinguished career in education, Diana taught numerous business management courses at Saint Mary’s College for 30 years and published a textbook entitled Asian Pacific Americans in the Workplace.

Aside from shelving his acting jobs for the time being, Daniel declared official dissolution for his own talent management company, Revolution TM Ltd. Before the closing of his company at the end of this month, Daniel made sure that all his employees and artistes were properly taken care of, including making numerous arrangements with Paco Wong’s (黃柏高) Sun Entertainment Culture. Others from his company will be heading over to Peter Lam’s (林建岳) Media Asia Films.

Missing all the promotions for his new movie Overheard 3 <竊聽風雲3>, which opened on May 30Daniel apologized to his fans and colleagues. “I heard that Overheard 3’s premiere in Beijing was very well received. Because of some family issues, I’m unable to join my friends with the promotions. I’m really sorry!”

Instead of being upset at Daniel’s absence, many praised Daniel for being a filial son and spending time with his family. Overheard 3 director, Alan Mak (麥兆輝), expressed his concern for Daniel’s situation and does not want to give him additional stress.

As it turns out, Daniel was a fairly rebellious child growing up, often getting into heated arguments with his parents. However, after his mother entered the hospital due to a heart attack year ago, Daniel had a change in his behavior. He became very studious and went straight to the hospital every day after school. The devoted Daniel even researched the basics about therapy treatments for post-heart-attack surgery so he can help his mother recover faster.

    1. Now I am really impressed with this guy’s ethics and filial ways……..I mean, he’s at the peak in his career but is still willing to take time out for taking care of his mother.

We need more men like him in the world!

  1. What a great son! Good luck and good health to your dear Mom!

  2. Even though I’m not a fan of his, I hope his mother gets well soon. I know what he is going through as my father had cancer and died from it last year.

    1. sorry to hear that, anon.

      may his mother recover soon.

  3. I really like his American accent. In my opinion, he is more charismatic and down to earth than Nicholas Tse and Edison Chen. Daniel kept his private life more private than others. When he talks, you can only hear positive thoughts that cherish his wife and child.

    1. Yup, Daniel is down to earth. Education, he went all the way. His parents are educated and successful. Nicholas is a dropout and he like to take shortcuts/cheat. Edison Chen is garbage. LOL! 😀

  4. For whatever reason, Daniel doesn’t want to say that his Mom passed away already. She was a wonderful woman and it is nice to see Daniel spending time with his family.

  5. His mother’s obit appeared in the SF newspaper about 2 weeks ago. Wonder why the pretense that she’s still alive?

    1. Really?! Wonder why Daniel would lie about his Mother still being alive if she passed away already?! You guys sure that’s his Mother?!

    1. What a highly intellectual and wonderful woman. May God bless her soul. Got me teary eyed reading the obituary.

  6. This makes me like him more, well I was never a fan of his, but I’ve often feel that this guy is rather down to earth. Hopefully there’s miracles….

  7. hi mom already passed away. i think he needs time off to spend with family and take care of everything else

  8. Daniel a great guy good son husband and dad and a really good actor he always plays the bad boys really well

  9. While this is posted in June, it indicated that he missed all promos in May. So, he may have already been in the States way before this news. So, we can’t be sure or say he lied. It could very well be an incorrect timeline. Anyways, it will be nice for him to spend time with his dad/family.

    1. There might also have been more publicity if he had reported the death to the press immediately. If the press thinks she’s merely sick, they not be as adamant about getting a story instead giving the family time to get together without press getting worked up. Just guessing.

  10. I’ve never really been a fan of Daniel. He’s pretty good-looking with only average acting skills. I wouldn’t say he’s a good actor but he’s not bad. However, I never really paid much attention to him until I watched him in an interview recently and thought he had a pretty down to earth personality and is quite a funny person. He’s also very humble! It’s good that he’s willing to put his career aside to spend time with his family. I wish him all the best with his family during his hiatus.

  11. His “company” has not been all that successful for himself and other signed actor.

Its dissolution is just a matter of time.
