While the star power of Andy Lau (刘德华) was undeniable, the extent of fans’ extremism was shocking. Despite Andy getting married and becoming a father, this did not stop fans from fantasizing about him in a delusional manner.  Ao Yanhong (敖艳红), a devoted Andy Lau fan for 23 years, declared that she had attempted suicide on 4 occasions due to her intense love. She saved her virginity for Andy Lau, yearning to have his baby!

The meaning of idol obsession was redefined when the suicide of the father of Yang Li Juan (杨丽娟), an extreme Andy Lau fan, occurred in March 2007. Recently, another extreme Andy Lau fan, 29-year-old Ao Yanhong in Gucheng, China came to the media’s attention. Yanhong’s life-long dream was to meet Andy Lau; she continued to fantasize about him romantically each day.

Falling in Love at 6 Years Old

In 1988, Yanhong fell in love at first sight when she came across a movie poster of Andy in front of a movie theater. That night, she dreamed of Andy Lau’s handsome face. She was only 6 years old.  ”Many of my private thoughts are written down in my diary, for Andy Lau to read. In 1998, I understood more about Andy Lau after seeing him on television. I fell deeply and unwaveringly in love with him then!”

Yanhong’s feelings for Andy only intensified over the years. She kept photos of Andy underneath her pillow, so that she can look at his face each night before going to sleep. Each day, she reread her diary entries, which were dedicated to Andy. She lost sleep and appetite over Andy. Locking herself in her room, she did not wish to speak to anyone. She only wanted to watch Andy’s drama performances and admire her photo collection of him.

Desperate to Meet Andy Lau

Yanhong put all her energies into fulfilling her dream of “how to meet Andy Lau.” Realizing that she was unable to afford travel expenses to Hong Kong, Yanhong decided to develop her own talent and become an artist herself to increase the chances of meeting Andy. “I set my heart on learning singing and dance skills. No matter how tough the training is, I will never give up!”

However, money was an obstacle. Her income only allowed her to pay for rent and living expenses. The remainder of  her money was spent on fees for internet access, which allowed her to track Andy’s news and whereabouts closely. There was not much money left for music and dance classes.

Since middle school, Yanhong has been mailing countless fan letters to Andy. She never received a response back from him. She had run away from home several times, in search of Andy. Each night, she cried in  bed thinking about Andy Lau, her life-long dream.

Attempted Suicide 4 Times

Due to her intense love for Andy, Yanhong attempted suicide on 4 occasions. In 2005, Yanhong learned that Andy Lau was romantically involved with an actress. Depressed, she drank more than 1 kg of wine wine and swallowed 12 sleeping pills. Although her heart was bent on killing herself, she escaped death.

In 2008, rumors circulated that Andy Lau had gotten married to Malaysian heiress, Carol Chu. Yanhong stopped fantasizing that Andy will be her husband. Her love dreams were not given up though. Yanhong said, “I still wish that he can be my man, as a lover or friend. Since I love him, I do not want to hurt him or his family.”

Although Andy Lau preferred to keep his personal life private, the 50-year-old recently acknowledged the birth of his daughter on May 9th. Many fans offered their congratulations to Andy. Yanhong remained calm. “I know that he always wanted to have a son. Girls are fine, but I want to also have his baby. I do not know if he is willing or not. Carol Chu is very fortunate; I admire her.”

Saving Virginity for Andy Lau

Ao Yanhong was a still a virgin. She was willing to only give it to her idol, Andy Lau. She did not mind waiting another 20 or 40 years. She did not have room in her heart for another man, refusing to even have basic contact with the opposite gender.

Ao Yanhong’s fanaticism towards Andy Lau was well known, since she had once declared her love for him on a mainland China variety program. In her hometown of Gucheng, she was treated like an outcast, in which pedestrians often pointed at her and gave her odd looks. Despite this, Yanhong said that she will always love Andy Lau.

Due to Ao Yanhong declaring  her devotion towards Andy unabashedly, this has resulted in a heated public backlash, criticizing her for her extremism. She did not mind, hoping that the controversy would lead to greater media coverage. “I hope that my story will eventually spread to Andy Lau’s ears. Perhaps it will only take a little more to do so.”

“I only love Andy Lau. I will retain my chastity for him. I hope to meet him, to become his woman one time,” Ao Yanhong confessed her heart’s strongest desire. “Even if he does not accept me, I will wait for him forever.”

Jayne: Ao Yanhong’s obsession with Andy Lau consumed her entire life. Since she was 6 years old, she has fantasized about him. Loving Andy has become her singular self-identity.

I was quite jolted reading about Ao Yanghong’s story. Unbelievable that her family allowed her to carry on in such a manner. Surely in her teenage years, they should have realized that something was wrong. If an obsession has already led to 4 suicide attempts, a future one may occur again. It does not appear that she is seeing a psychiatrist to help her situation either.
