  1. I haven’t watched ‘The Lost Bladesman’. Is he that good in the movie? From his movies I’ve watched so far, I will consider the first Ip Man and Wu Xia to contain his finest performances as an actor thus far. The others are imho a rehash of his usual action hero characters. His action choreography though is among the best in HK at present and he does represent the last of the ‘true action generation’ after Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao etc. I foresee no other younger actors in the near future capable of replacing him for the action mantle. What do you guys think?

“I foresee no other younger actors in the near future capable of replacing him for the action mantle. What do you guys think?”

Agree, Donnie still has at least a good 10 years ahead of him in terms of being in the forefront of action superstars. Indeed there is no true successor in sight that we know of currently.

Action stars such as Jet Li and Donnie Yen trained at a very young age in martial arts, thus their supreme athleticism, ability to grasp different martial arts styles are hard to beat. Watching their martial arts moves onscreen is indeed beautiful as their bodies move with such fluidity, grace, and power.

A worthy successor can be found, but needs to have trained at a young age in Shaolin martial arts. There are millions of such youths in China and it will just take some talent search to find someone with acting potential, good looks, and onscreen presence. Shouldn’t be too hard if a producer truly searched for such young talent.

Right now, it is just easier to cast big names such as Donnie, Jet, and Jackie though. When the time comes and the spot opens for someone younger, it shouldn’t be too hard to find potential talent, which is vast in mainland China.

    2. In the near future, perhaps Donnie still reigns. But in the further future, as per Jayne mentioned there a successor among the many young martial arts practitioners, who has the screen presence and charisma in China is possible to find.

Donnie took longer years in acting to establish his screen presence as a “superstar” than Jackie and Jet Li.

There’s still Wu Jing. He still young compared to Donnie and the rest and his martial art is good. I think the older generation action actors who have became producers are also trying to bring up young action stars like Philip Ng and To Yu Hong.

  2. He is only one of a few Chinese actors is truly talented in acting in cinema.

TVB/ATV of the past trained a series of good actors/actresses (Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Louis Koo….). Too bad, I do not see any current TVB artist is that kind of good.

Micheal Tse and Raymond Lam are actors can participate in movie but Micheal Tse means nothing if there is no other good actors to boost the box office. While Raymond Lam might be considered good when acting in drama, still nothing in movie. He was in the snake something but without Jet Li, a Twins girl, etc…well…bad.

    1. I think LF acting in The Sorcerer and The White Snake way too good than The Jade and The Pearl,so I think there is improvement here in his acting.

      1. I agree that he actet better in the snake than he acted in the pearl. I thought he would have done much better in the pearl but kind of so dissapointed. However, the snake, well not suck but to be in big scene, he would need to do lot more.

      2. Yup,even other nowadays stars need lot of movies before they are getting better

  3. Congrats to Donnie…He made Chinese standup in international standard

  4. Donnie is a great action movie star. He looks clean cut. His physique is lean and toned, not overly big muscles. The way that he fights makes martial arts looks effortless, powerful and agile.

And we have to admit that his face is more handsome than Jet Li or Jackie Chan.

I don’t think he can emote well though, e.g. as a drama actor. He plays stern or repressed heroes who don’t have to emote much.

One of my favorite action stars.
