Edwin Siu Hopes to Win Best Supporting Actor

With four nominations at this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards, Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) hopes to become a winner and has his sights set on the Best Supporting Actor title.

Despite getting his start in music, Edwin is better known for his efforts on the TV screen and has made steady progress at TVB since joining in 2008. He first received wide recognition as Ah Yap in 2012’s Daddy Good Deeds <當旺爸爸>, and continued to earn acclaim as villain Ling Tim-Sau in The Confidant <大太監>. This year, Edwin further challenged himself with major roles in A Great Way to Care II <仁心解碼II> and Bullet Brain <神探高倫布>, and quickly achieved leading status in Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>.

It is obvious that TVB has plans to groom Edwin into its next first-line star. In addition to major screen time, the company has also asked Edwin to sing theme songs for his dramas, perhaps to remind viewers of his multiple talents. In the 2014 TVB calendar, Edwin shares the spotlight with TV King and Queen Moses Chan (陳豪) and Tavia Yeung (楊怡), and proudly takes the center spot next to Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), showing his favored status.

Nabbing his very first nomination for TV King, Edwin is humble about his chances as he is facing such strong competition this year. He is instead crossing his fingers for the Best Supporting Actor title, nominated for his role as buck-toothed psychiatrist Jackson Leung in A Great Way to Care II. Although this battle is less fierce, Edwin must still contend with many veteran artists, including Ram Chiang (蔣志光), Elliot Ngok (岳華), Lau Kong (劉江), and Benz Hui (許紹雄). In addition to these two awards, Edwin is also on the ballot for My Favorite Male Character and Most Improved Male Artiste.

To pull for votes, Edwin has purchased peanut candies from Brother’s Keeper‘s main sponsor Koi Kei and passed them out to fellow artists at TVB’s recent year-end feast. He admits that the awards hype has given him hope, and plans to celebrate regardless of the results. “My friends have already made reservations to help me celebrate. They have definitely made me feel extremely confident! If I don’t win even with four nominations, I hope they will console me by picking up my tab at the parties!”

  1. I hated his character in A Great Way To Care II and I’m not really a fan of his acting either (although I did like him in Brother’s Keeper). My choice would be for Ron to get this award.

    1. me too. I would rather hope either Ron Ng or Him Law or Vincent win

  2. Edwin Siu did very well in his recent drama series, and I particularly like his filial-son-and-hard-worker character, Ah Shun, in “Brother’s Keeper”. It was so much fun to watch his scenes with Kristal Tin.

Edwin, good luck! I also hope you will win “Best Supporting Actor”.

  3. Of course he wouldwill win s/t . He got nominated in 4 sections. I don’t really like his acting!! Sorry but is the honest truth. Tvb is getting worst!! There are lots of potential actors needed to be promoted. He is just too hype!!

  4. I think he would win most improved!! I wanted Vincent wong to win best supporting actor.

    1. Unfortunately, Vincent Wong was not even nominate for Best Supporting Actor. I also support Vincent Wong for Best Supporting Actor this year.

  5. He’s a good actor, but those veterans in the category are much better. I hope Benz wins.

  6. Don’t think that Edwin shld be nominated for Best Actor in BK. His acting was mostly inconsistent there.

    1. I think he did pretty well in the first 2/3 of the drama series, but okay in the last 1/3. On the whole, his acting was more impressive than Linda Chung’s in “Brother’s Keeper”.

      1. Actually he and Linda are the weakest in BK compared to Ruco and Kristal. He’s the male version of Linda in BK, good in some scenes, awful in others.

      2. @Lame, you’re really lame. Who says he’s competing with Linda? You don’t know the difference betw competing and comparing?

      3. You can’t tell the difference between a man’s supporting role to a female lead role? Can Edwin play Linda’s role or Linda play Edwin’s role? If they can’t play each others role OR compete in the same category why bother ‘comparing’? Being lame is the only reason I can think of. Ouchie.

      4. @ Lame, you’re still too thick to get my point. I’m comparing their level of acting, not saying who can play whose role.

  7. Didn’t i read it here that someone said Catherine Tsang advised Ruco not to compete in the Most Improved category in 2011 (when TOT was aired)? Thus, he only competed in BA. So how come Edwin’s in BA, BSA and Most Improved simultaneously?

    1. You are absolutely right. It was reported in the newspaper right before the anniversary awards ceremony in 2011. Therefore, I was surprised too that Edwin was nominated in all 4 categories. He and Vincent Wong are too good for “Most Improved Actor” category.

      1. so it’s blatant favoritism. So unfair! If he had competed, he wld have a very high chance of winning as he was really hot after TOT.

  8. I like Edwin and feel that his acting is not too shabby (of course he’s not stellar, but definitely better than alot of other artists currently at TVB)… but unfortunately I can’t bring myself to root for him or anyone nominated in BSA this year because it still irks me that TVB purposefully played some nasty politics in that category this year…the actors whom I felt are the most deserving to win in that category based on their performances this year (Power Chan, Vincent Wong, and Chung King Fai) weren’t even nominated, so to me, there’s no reason for me to care about that category at all this year (unlike in years past)…

  9. I really hope Edwin wins instead of Ron if tvb wants to give Ron a major hope Ron gets the favorite or a pork award tonight

      1. Well I don’t know cos Ron Isaac Ron is an audience favorite this year

    1. It just might be a surprise if Ron gets an award tonight cos in the past there has been surprised winners

  10. Between Edwin and ROn, I think Ron deserves the win. He is one of 3 reasons why TITS 2 didn’t suck and a big part as well. he may not have the best acting skills but his Isaac is perhaps the one with the wittiest lines and the most growth in TITS 2. Edwin is competent but I didn’t see him taking BK into another level. Rather I don’t see him in any role that brings a series to another level. Ron did it with TITS 2. If without his Isaac and the way he portrayed Isaac, TITS 2 will be really really really dull.

  11. Poor Edwin Siu ……. he got nominated in all 4 categories, and did not even win one. Anyway, he has given 1st lead roles to act, which matters more to him.

    1. it’s rather embarrassing for him esp since Dodo mentioned that being in 4 categories he shld win at least one.
