Fala Chen, Dayo Wong Upset with Cell Phone Disruptions

Dayo Wong (黃子華) and Fala Chen‘s (陳法拉) theatrical show, Skylight <前度>, has been very well-received since its opening. The number of shows was also increased due to popular demand. To her delight, Fala’s Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> co-stars, Louise Lee (李司棋) and Susanna Kwan (關菊英), also attended the show to offer their support.

However, not everything was smooth sailing. After several disturbances due to cell phone usage in prior shows, both Fala and Dayo expressed their frustration with the unnecessary distractions. Through interviews and social media, the actors urged the audience to refrain from using their cell phones during the show. Despite their continued appeals, there were still several cell phone disruptions, including glares and ringtones.

With several more performances in coming days, Dayo took the opportunity when taking his bow at the end of the play to advise the audience to respect every performer on stage and turn off their cell phones. “Luckily the ringtone earlier was not one of my songs, but a song that I am not familiar with. When the phone went off, Fala and I both turned red with anger. Other than affecting our moods, I was also worried that when the cell phone rang, the people nearby will tell the person to be quiet, adding more unnecessary noise!” Despite his lighthearted scolding, Dayo’s speech was met with applause from the audience.

  1. People who does this is beyond rude. It’s a stage play.. so any disruption can cause issue with people who are performing!

    1. @elizabeth

Signal Jammers are useless if they’re taking pics and videos.

They need to do what the west does, propose a strict policy on cell phone use then evict those that violate the rules. As simple as that.

  2. Do the brit way; scold them, refuse to continue until everyone switched phone to mute.

  3. Honestly, I can’t stand rude audiences like that who don’t have the decency to respect the performers on stage as well as fellow audience members.   The “distraction” thing  (be it cell phones, crying babies, flashes from cameras, etc.) at concerts / stage plays is one of my biggest pet peeves, right behind people being chronically late to stuff.  Why even go to these things if you’re just going to sit there and look at your phone the entire time instead of paying attention to the show?  Whenever I go to concerts and/or other stage performances, I either turn my phone off beforehand or I don’t even bring my phone with me at all (especially if I’m paying like $300 for a concert ticket, in which case I am absolutely going to enjoy every minute and not let anything distract me for those few hours!).

Good on Dayo to address the issue, though unfortunately, it’s going to continue to fall on deaf ears, since there will always be people out there who don’t give a crap and will do whatever they want just because they can…
