Fala Chen to Release Debut Music Album in July thumbnail

Fala Chen (陳法拉) will finally be able to realize her music dreams. In July, she will release her debut music album under Stars Shine International Ltd. The music videos of Fala’s two new songs, One Half and Atonement will be bundled together into a short movie to feature an involved love story.

A handsome Korean man will star as Fala’s romantic interest in the music videos. Uncertain whether there will be any intimate scenes, Fala said, “But I will have to cry, since one of the songs will have a sad tone.” In the music videos, Fala will be wearing several sexy dresses. Fala said, “The dresses will be able to reveal my body figure. Some are back-revealing.”

Earlier this week, Fala sang live for a taping of the Jade Solid Gold music program. She sang off key for some notes and performed nervously. Asked about her performance, Fala said that she had performed better than she had originally envisioned. In the coming weeks, Fala will be busy promoting her new music album.

Jayne: Looking forward to hearing Fala’s new songs! With more practice, she’ll perform better singing live. At least her music company took time to prepare her debut album and it was not a quick job prepared in a few months time.

Here’s a pretty amazing portrait artist, Darwin, who enjoys drawing TVB artists. There are even time-lapse videos of Fala Chen, Raymond Lam and Linda Chung portraits he drew! The time-lapse videos are amazing, as you can see, he rarely erases.

    2. lol says:

I already heard her first plug. Sorry to say that she’s no singer. Bland is the word.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LnfpKId1F34

    3. Fox says:

Fala’s singing isn’t bad but it’s too general. Her voice can be found in anywhere. Yes, lol is correct that bland is the word.

One more thing, she chose safe path to plug “Half”. This song is better than her other songs plugged but it’s a very safe song.

When her album is out, I’ll definitely try. I wanna hear her upbeat songs.

      • lol says:

Besides being bland I also don’t like the way she uttered her lyrics. I don’t know why. It’s just not ear candy to my ears.

        • Fox says:

Maybe she tried too hard to say Cantonese properly. Because ppl criticize her a lot on her Mando pronounce so she forces herself when speaking Cantonese.

Actually I thought that she’ll release a Mando album at first.

        • Vivien says:

Agreed. Tried to hard to speak Canto and become unnatural.

      • lol says:

4 artistes: Myolie. Fala. Linda. Kate.

Myolie, Fala and Linda’s genre are almost alike. Myolie to me is the best singer. Fala is bland and Linda is weak, but Linda always get good songs.

Kate is more towards dance songs. That’s the thing she can do anyway since her singing is what we call ‘disastrous’.

        • Fox says:

Among 4, I agree that Myolie is the best singer. Not that she has the best voice but she has the singing technique and the depth in her vocal. I think she chooses the right path: To put a little of Rock in pop. Her voice isn’t really suitable for the soft ballads.

Linda, on the other hand, is suitable for soft ballads. Linda’s strength is her sweet soft voice, but her voice is rather weak. Therefore the soft ballads can stick in audiences’ heads easier. Whenever Linda sings, I feels she is shaky.

Kate is suitable for dance happy pop songs and she should sing this type of song. She is definitely a bad singer but a good performer. I always like to see Kate’s performance not because of the singing but the dancing :D .

Fala’s voice is bland but not bad. I guess if she sings Mando songs, she can do better? When singing Cantonese, she sounds forced.

        • lol says:

Yes maybe because her Cantonese feel forced which caused the unpleasantness hearing her sing. She should try Mando or English songs if that’s her better language.

        • lol says:

Then Kate is more a stage performer than a singer, but she can’t hold a concert entirely since she got tired from her dancing. 1 or 2 songs is fine.

        • Addy says:

Out of the four, I rather hear Myolie sing. Linda has a sweet voice, but she has terrible singing technique. I don’t even want to bother with Kate and Fala, because they can’t sing at all. Kate’s an okay performer, so I can forgive her for the bad voice. But Fala on the other hand…

        • Fox says:

I doubt that Kate will have chance to open a concert. Among 4, only Myolie has 2 mini concerts on hand rite now. Among all TVB A listed artists turn singers, the list of concert is as follows:

          Ron – 1 mini concert
          KC – 1 mini concert
LF – 3 HKC concert + several world tours
          Myolie – 2 mini concert

I wonder the next person will do a mini concert or a concert. And who’s next? Linda? Or Bosco? Fala? Personally, I don’t hope they’ll end up like Ron after the mini concert. A concert is really a challenge to them.

As for Fala, I’ve heard her sing Talk to me in JSG and I’m not really supporting her to sing English. Maybe Mando will be her best?

        • lol says:

I think Fala will have highest chance. She has smooth backup now.

        • lol says:

Hm Tavia is the only current A list TVB that don’t sing

        • lol says:

@Addy: Yes Linda has sweet voice and sweet song but bad singing skills. I also would rather listen to Myolie alone out of the four first line TVB actresses.

        • Vivien says:

          FALA: boring. Yawn.

          Linda: boring. Sleep.

          Kate: better not listen.

Myolie: Ok singing but nothing special. Only her first song has some rock but all others back to love ballads? LOL and become boring.

        • reader says:

i like myolie better than the other three
          her voice is stronger

        • Vivien says:

I think even Mag Lam is better than this four ladies. ROFL

        • Fox says:

@Vivien: Why Even Mag Lam? Mag Lam has the good singing technique and the voice, too. She is in another level to these 4.

@lol: Glad that TY knows her things and really hope she won’t turn singer. Her voice is also utmost so-so and can’t hit high notes, too.

        • Funn Lim says:

Isn’t Mag Lam a singer first and foremost? Even then I find her bland mostly because song choice.

        • fez says:

i like Mag Lam. Hated her at voice because of her voice, but her deep vocals grew on me. Did you listen to her first album though? I quite like it and would recommend to anyone who’s interested!

        • pandamao says:

glad to see people appreciating myolie among the 4 artist. i agree myolie is the best of the bunch.

she tries to incorporate a little rock in some of her songs and i personally prefer those more than the other ones.

some of her slow songs are okay but i rather listen to other artist than her!

        • Hannahh says:

          MYOLIE FTW!

    4. Funn Lim says:

For sure she will have prominent first listing in karaokes called.. which is the one ran by her husband’s family?

    5. Addy says:

Also heard her first plug. Her voice is bland, the song is bland. It’s not a song that will top the charts.

    6. reader says:

A handsome Korean man will star as Fala’s romantic interest in the music videos. Uncertain whether there will be any intimate scenes

i’m pretty sure there won’t be any intimate scenes in her music videos, she never had any intimate scenes in tvb dramas, and she’s married, her husband family won’t let her do any intimate scenes whether in dramas, movies or music videos unless she is ready to be kicked out from the family

    7. Susan says:

Other than Raymond Lam and Myolie Wu I think the others should just focus on acting.

Fala was lucky that JSG isn’t a live show so she could try 3 times before she could perform the song fully. But what would she have done if it was a real live show?
You can’t just stop half-way because you couldn’t hit the notes.

I just find it unfair for the “real” singers, who have to go through training and other hardship to be able to release an album.

      • Fox says:

I’ve been to JSG few times. Can redo in JSG but it’s a half live show. The audiences in JSG stage listen to them live. The redo only can be done whenever there are mistakes, not that bad singing can require for a redo :D .

However, I don’t think Fala or Linda can sing 15-18 songs for a mini concert, don’t talk of a concert (about 28-32 songs at least). Or they will have to end up with lip sync.

        • lol says:

Kate can only last 2 songs since she only do dance songs. Good for her that she no longer sing now.

        • Fox says:

I think she can do 4-5 songs :D . But the fact that she dun have a record company now so don’t talk of her singing career. She is just like Ron last time. Maybe Kate will only sing themesong for Txb in the future instead. BTW, recently, TVB often sends her to be guest in LF’s concert, maybe they are aiming EEG for her?

Whatever, she is still a good performer so I’d rather watch her perform on stage.

        • lol says:

Not really. Kate was practically out of breath after 2 songs when she was performing during her singer days. She moves a lot so she consumes more energy than ballad singers like Linda.

        • lol says:

TVB and EEG are best friends and since Kate want to do movies: EEG is best. Like Raymond and Kevin.

        • Fox says:

Won’t know until it happens :D , lol. I think Kate can manage 3-4 songs – slow and upbeat songs in a combo.

For EEG, I guess TVB wants that, but the matter is EEG itself. Last time EEG denied Linda.

        • Fox says:

Ah, you forgot Wong Cho Lam and Mag Lam who are also TVB-EEG.

        • Vivien says:

Mag Lam can sing much better than the 4 above LOL

        • Fox says:

          @Vivien: It’s something too obvious.

        • fez says:

Wong Cho Lam is a good singer. He doesn’t have the looks but his got the voice. Remember on JSG Music Awards a few years ago where ChoLam, Bosco were newbies….. Cho Lam was paired with Leo Ku singing and Bosco was paired up with Eason singing . Bosco’s performance was so embarassing you can see other singers cringing and big wide open O on their faces because Bosco tried too hard. Whereas Wong Cho Lam’s duet with Leo was such a surprise and everyone found it so enjoyable and great.

Oh yeh that award show, Myolie also performed coz she won some award, but her voice was a bit off. She can’t do live.

        • Fox says:

JSG 2008 in Jan 2009 if I rmb rite. Bosco cant keep the key for the song. And another funny award is the one when Myolie, Linda, Mr. sang in a medley with GEM.

      • lol says:

Fala was lucky that JSG isn’t a live show so she could try 3 times before she could perform the song fully. But what would she have done if it was a real live show?
You can’t just stop half-way because you couldn’t hit the notes.

I agree. She’s lucky that she have 3 tries until she can hit the note which wouldn’t happen in live show.

      • lol says:

and singers are joining TVB to act in dramas such as Ivana Wong. lol

      • Larry 3 says:

JSG is taped show with studio audience.

    8. Larry 3 says:

      JSG award soon?

      • lol says:

JSG newcomer this year: Fala :D

        • reader says:

won’t be surprised if that happen, who cares about quality…
          she is highly promoted

        • Fox says:

TVB still has The Voice band, dun forget that :P . They might give The Voice band award? But I think Fala will have one position in newcomer award of JSG, now only see Gold, Silver or Bronze.

        • Vivien says:

Announcer: and the Gold award goes to Fala!(audience all pretend to be surprise LOL)

        • Fox says:

JSG’s newcomer award is now a mix of male and female :D . Hehe, Fala will have to fight with some men :P .

BTW up to now this year dun really have any special names for the new singer. Adason Lo isn’t nominated last year, so maybe last year. Providing that he is EEG’s now and TVB + EEG relationship, we all know.

    9. Fox says:

I wonder of a case in Txb: Cilla Kung. Will she focus on acting field after receiving some archivements in acting?

    10. J says:

She should try to hone her acting skills before she moves onto something new. Now she’s just mediocre in two things rather than one.

      • reader says:

i think now she is trying very hard to fulfill her ambition in entertainment industry before she leaves the industry and take her role as a rich housewife.

      • Vivien says:

She got one good thing which is her LOOKS :P . At least in TVB world LOL

        • Vivien says:

Oh and another good thing: a wealthy hubby :P

        • reader says:

          @vivien
yeah, she is considered ‘pretty’ in tvb
besides her back up, her looks is the only thing she had.

        • Vivien says:

          @reader

Her acting is plain and boring too. The pretty face saved her because at least she’s pretty

        • Moon says:

          @Vivien:
Not all of her acting is boring except Madam Jo. She just need to practice more with professional role. I have read some of your comment, before you’re like very support her, now like against her.

        • Vivien says:

          @Moon

LOL. If I’m against her I wont say she’s pretty. I still think she’s the prettiest out of the big 5 and that’s a compliment :P

        • Vivien says:

Actually she can be the prettiest one TVB has currently.

        • reader says:

i think she is getting prettier each year, but her acting is not getting better

in Queens of diamonds and hearts her expressions were so exaggerated

      • fez says:

maybe she thinks she’s at the peak of her acting career so she wants to try something new.

    11. elin says:

hmmm i dot thnk she cn sing.. i dont evn like her talking voice..

      • reader says:

i don’t like her talking voice while speaking cantonese, but i have no problem with her voice speaking mandarin or english

    12. sandcherry says:

I think TVB is promoting her artistes too much now …. acting, singing, as well as dancing. It is good that if a person can act, sing and dance at the same time. However, it is extremely hard to become such a person. Since the actresses spend too much time in singing and dancing, they neglect their acting. None of the top 5 fadans or siu-sangs are good in acting, and don’t bother to mention singing and dancing. They can’t concentrate on acting, and acting is just like their 9 to 5 job. I don’t see any improvements from them.

    13. sandcherry says:

      Among the top 5 fadans:

      1) Myolie Wu seems to have a decent voice for singing. She said she was in a school choir when she was in high school. If she wants to be a singer, she has to go for more voice lessons and work hard on her voice. She is not good yet as a singer.

      2) Linda Chung’s voice is too weak. She will never sing well; or she should choose songs without a wide range of notes. It may help her a bit. I know she is working very hard on her singing.

      3) Fala Chan – basic voice is okay, but she is not well-trained. It is better for her to sing Mandarin songs, as her Cantonese and English (not for singing) are not good. She is bland.

      4) Kate Tsui – can’t sing, and not well-trained. She needs to work on her voice and learn singing techniques. Her dancing is okay.

      5) Tavia Yeung – Haven’t heard her singing much. Cannot comment.

      • Larry 3 says:

To sum up: They all SUCK!

      • Vivien says:

All 5 above dont deserve to be called singers

      • Addy says:

Tavia sang a duet with Frankie Lam. It’s the subtheme for Face to Fate. And ya she can’t sing.

None of these fadans can sing. The only one who can barely pull it off is Myolie.

      • Fox says:

I’ve watched clips of all above live. I’ve listened to Linda and Kate’s live singing in real life.

        1. Myolie: She can sing live but the matter is from her vocal. Her voice isn’t really good. She has singing technique, she has the confidence of being a singer, she has practices. She only dun have the great vocal. Of course with more practices, she can go further. But she needs these practices.

        2. Linda – she isn’t a good performer. Her voice is weak but with more practices, maybe she can sing better. Before, her voice is kinda chicky but after getting rid of this chicken voice, her voice becomes plain. Listen to her performance in the recent show of Deng Chi Wai and you will know what I mean. Plus, when singing, she is like a statue. A shaky statue in fact. No eye contact, no confidence. It’s a bit better by now but still not good.

        3. Fala – she tried too hard to sing Cantonese properly. Why don’t sing in Mando, I wonder. Her voice is rather plain but the voice material isn’t bad. Maybe when she can get rid of the forced voice, she’ll sing better.

        4. Kate – she is a performer, not a singer. Her voice is weak. However, the way she performs make her performance interesting. She can do the eye-contact with audiences, make them look at her and concentrate on her performance. But she doesn’t have a voice. What’s a pity.

        5. TY – her voice is utmost so-so. Too low to a woman and can’t hit the high notes. Same to Linda, she can’t perform. Her expression during the performance is rather dull. But different to Linda who is always shaky, TY makes many unnecessary actions and expressions when trying to contact with the audiences. In addition, she doesn’t have any supplement skills like the others.

When singing live, all the weaknesses of them showed. If any of them have the brightest future in singing field, I’ll say only Myolie can. The rest should come back to the work of an actress.

      • lol says:

Out of the five fadans, I think only Myolie has singing skills.

As for Tavia, if she doesn’t have what it takes, then it’s better if she stays out of the singing industry

        • fez says:

i think that applies to any of those other actresses as well. Unfortunately, even though they don’t have the talent and they are pretty crap, they still attempt to stay in the singing industry.

      • Kidd says:

Tavia’s live singing. I think her singing voice is pretty good. She just need some technical skill. Her deep voice is quite unique because not many HK female singers nowadays has a deep voice.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on2o1CVnJ1M

        • Funn Lim says:

I bet after hearing this one..

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd6Ljy_6Kng

No one can be as bad as THAT. Nowadays with the help of autotune anyone can sing but the difference is karaoke singers or real singers. And they’re actresses first, singers as a hobby so I don’t forsee any increase in technical skills. Even so called singers in HK can’t sing, more so actresses who sings for fun.

        • Funn Lim says:

Oh and kudos to her for singing live but sincerely, absolutely terrible singer. It is not just technical skill lacking but thankfully she isn’t a professional singer so I suppose it doesn’t matter.

        • fez says:

Tavia has a deep singing voice but so do many professional singers such as Sammi Cheng, Miriam Yeung, Anita Mui, Mag Lam …Western singers such as Pink, Anastasia, Jessie J….. “Too low to a woman and can’t hit the high notes.” What do you mean by TOO LOW? Her voice is clearly not as low as those professionals.

Her voice is on a low register, but being LOW is not her obstacle to being a good singer. Its her technique that’s the obstacle. Tavia does not have a technique and she doesn’t need one because she is not making CDs or holding concerts and mini gigs like these other ones do. And the best thing is, she prolly KNOWS she is a crap singer that’s why she’s not even trying to enter the music industry like these other ones who are crap but still lingering around.

        • Fox says:

@fez: But these singers can hit high and low notes while TY can’t :D . Her low voice is low by its natural but not the wide range of vocal. This wide range of vocal is a gift of god and a process of hard working practices.

And it’s good for TVB and herself to know her things. Hope that they won’t change mind next to allow her to release album like the others.

    14. Victoria says:

Well since she is just starting, fans should be less critical and definitely more supporting. With practice she will improve and hopefully she will sing in Mando or English too.

      • Vivien says:

If she’s good people will be supportive of her but nope she’s just another karaoke singer with plain voice and boring singer charisma. The good thing: she’s still pretty

      • reader says:

i think critics can also be a part of support, we will never know what is our weakness without being criticized, without knowing our weakness, we will never be improved

    15. P says:

sorry i prefer fala’s voice over linda’s. linda’s voice is really not for singing

    16. TVBFanatic says:

I really like Fala… but singing? Really? I really don’t like how they try to milk these actors/actresses (and their fans) dry.

      • missy says:

It doesn’t seem to be something TVB is pushing for, cause she would have had an album already if TVB was the mastermind. It sounds like its something that she always wanted to do and has the backing and resources now, regardless of talent.

    17. Kaye says:

Fala should just stick on her acting.

    18. sushiroll says:

I wouldn’t call Fala a singer. She most likely be singing karaoke style songs with no real vocal power. Just like 99% of the Hong Kong female singers pretending to be talented but are lacking actual music talent.

    19. J says:

I don’t really like these actors turned singers. Singing is really an art… if you want people to actually pay to buy your cds and listen to your songs, then a) you should actually be a good singer or b) you should be a good entertainer (dancer — like Britney Spears in her pre-crazy days, even though she has an awful voice, she dances and entertains).

      • HeTieShou says:

I agree and many actor turned singers don’t do very well. But honestly, many die hard fans would buy their albums just to support them if they are already a fan of their acting. They would buy their albums regardless of how bad their singing is. One of the worse singers that I have ever heard is Ruby Lin. Oh my gosh is her singing bad,but she still manages to sell albums because her die hard fans would buy them just to support her. However, many of them do agree that her singing is bad.

Fala’s singing is not good and she should just stick to acting(even though her acting isn’t great either but it is still better than her singing). Singing is truly an art and I think you need to be born with a naturally good voice if you want to sing well or if you don’t have a good voice, at least be a good entertainer. I personally cannot imagine Fala being a good entertainer…

I think it would be sad if actor turned singers only entered the music industry just to try to make money. If you do make it big in the singing industry, then you can earn a lot more than acting. However, it is hard to if you don’t have the skills. I really admire Felix Wong for sticking to acting which is he really good at and refuses to sing just for more money. He knows that singing is not his thing and says that he does not want embarass himself just for money…

        • claimine says:

@HTS: I’m quite tolerant of actors turned singers and vice versa. I just don’t listen to their singing so am not bothered at all. If their poor singing can earn money for them, then more power to them. After all, they earned their money honestly and through their own efforts and hard work.

In Fala’s case, I can understand she as an artist may want to experiment and experience the different aspect of being a more multifaceted artist. If the music album opportunity presented itself to her, why not grab it? What does she have to lose but her face. Her efforts and time could be seen broadening her artistic horizon. Her singing stint will train her to be a more multifaceted artist, broaden her artistic repertoire, bring excitement to her life, at the same time, broaden her contacts and connection with different people in the entertainment industry, and hopefully make money in the process.

As to sticking to solely acting or singing as an artist, below is another viewpoint seen from an artist’s point of view, specifically, Steven Ma’s.

2004 article “These days it is difficult to be sorely a singer. It is tough to be newcomer singers. The markets they have to penetrate no longer specialized purely in music. They must also film movies, tv series, commercials, even work in non related music jobs.”

Ma Zai is not talking about himself but of the newcomers these days.

He segues: “Only then can they survive. If based on purely singing, sometimes can only release an album within two years; but meanwhile you need to eat, dai lou! Sometimes I hear the newcomers saying, “cash for food not even enough”. Truly pitiful. So crossover is a must.

“Even though I’m not a pundit but based on my eleven years in the industry, and my observation of the change in trends, I believe these sectors have already been crossover, namely: modeling, movies, tv series, singing, radio broadcasting, and tv hosting; they have all overlapped. Nowadays, there is only one common label: artist. No longer like how we used to view Mei Jie (Anita Mui), Hao Zeong (Alan Tam, principal), Goh Goh (Leslie Cheung), and Danny Chan. For their generation, singers were strictly singers, tv actors were tv actors, and movie stars were movie stars. But it is different now. Even Taiwan is this way; Japan too. So must not be too inflexible and insist on saying, “I must be a singer.”

“My time in the industry was much better. When I was a newcomer, there were many shows to do. Then there were no mp3 downloads from the net; pirated cds were not as rampant. My first album sold more than tens of thousands copies. Now, albums with sales hovering 3000 or 5000 copies are considered quite respectable. Those with poor sales hovered around 500 or 800 copies. Just think how terrible that is.”

          * crossover, overlapped are Steven’s own English words.

        • sandcherry says:

If you want to be a singer-actress, you will probably end up being a 50-50 singer-actress. You will not have time and energy to do well in both singing or acting careers.

        • Vivien says:

I can only imagine Fala being another boring HK ‘singer’.

        • Fox says:

Actually the multi-task or all-rounded artists are not something new in the showbiz of any country. Actor turn singer, singer turn actor, actor turn producer, singer turn composer, etc. are very normal. However, it depends on how good they can do to satisfy the audiences of their second field. If they can do good in both, they will be accepted. If not, they’ll come back to something they are good at soon or late.

I like the way Japanese differ artist and idol :D . To them, idols are the performers. They can have limited talent, just beautiful faces and the heart of a performer to give the audiences entertainment and fun. Artists, on the other hand, are the ppl who do real “art” jobs. Their positions is of course different to idols. Idols can become artists if they have talents and artists can choose idols as their first stage in the showbiz. However, artists are artists and idols are idols. But being an idol that dun mean you dun have to work hard. For example, nobody will call AKB48 girls real artists but can’t deny that the girls work very hard. I can see the ability of becoming an idols in some among them, but most will stay as an idol forever.

So overall, it depends on the talent of each person, not that all crossover artists are bad in their second, third, fourth field.

    20. mousey says:

Really wanted Bernice to launch a singing career, cos that girl can sing.

What a pity, waste of a good talent.

    21. Summer says:

Fala should stick to her acting. She has a better chance winning an award in acting than singing. Unless TVB might give her an award, like the best newcomer. Lol

    22. Moon says:

About her singing: the more practice the more better. Not everyone successes at the first time!

    23. Kidd says:

Just curious. What do you guys think of Elaine Yiu’s singing?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVWEQLCWTIc

And I wonder why TVB never let Sharon Chan sings their themesong. Sharon Chan used to be a singer. Same with Toby. She also used to be a singer.

      • Addy says:

Much better than Fala, for sure. I really like Elaine Yiu. She has improved so much over the years, and she deserves more recognition. TVB needs to promote her to fadan status asap.

        • Fox says:

Elaine’s bad luck to have a female leading role and then be criticized very hard. After that, even when she improved a lot, her chance is lost. Aizz, I hope she’ll be promoted one day.

        • fez says:

she got a bit of buzz from her performance in Bottled Passion. She was second female lead. But haven’t heard of her since. I think she’s been demoted back to supporting roles.

      • Fox says:

Elaine can sing with emotions. Another example of her singing in an upbeat song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLUp0nQeT0o I always like her and hope to see her with another chance. Too bad Txb seems to forget her.

As for Sharon, I didn’t know that she was a singer. I only know that she was a model. For her singing, I find it’s rather bland and nothing special. Not good not bad.

For Toby, I like her voice. I think she is a potential singer. But I guess the shadow of being Tommy Leung’s daughter makes ppl biased toward her. Now she gets married and I think she won’t do much in the showbiz.

      • exoidus says:

Not bad at all. Didn’t knew she could sing that well.

Her acting is better than most of the so-called top fadans and she looks great as well.

      • fez says:

i know Nancy Wu used to be a singer. TVB should let her sing too!

        • Kidd says:

I also thought of Nancy Wu yesterday and remembered she has competed in TVB’s New Talent singing contest before. But, then, I heard this

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSGbBXB8Ycc

A very weak rendition. Maybe the song does not suit her.

        • sandcherry says:

Nancy Wu is not one of the top fadans who are highly promoted by TVB. I don’t think they will let her sing with full backup. Besides, I think she is not very good in her singing.

Chan Chin Pang has a good and strong voice and is pretty good in singing. He was a new singer recruited by Polygram many years ago. TVB has not promoted him highly to be a pop singer yet.

It is up to TVB to promote their own favourites.

        • fez says:

yes Ruco Chan is another good one! There’s so many clips on youtube.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAXmEtxiBow

And he’s got the looks and stage charisma and vocals… HOT HOT HOT!!!!!!

        • Fox says:

I rmbed that Nancy started as Miss photogenic in TVB Mag contest and she was a model.

I watched Strictly go dancing 2 where Nancy took part in and I think Grace’s victory is 100% well deserved. Grace can dance better than Nancy.

        • lol says:

I think Grace and Nancy are both great dancers

      • Vivien says:

        Elaine is good!

      • Vivien says:

Nancy is TVB’s best female dancer

    24. Kidd says:

Fala Chen singing Mandarin and English songs. She sings the Ice Cream song well.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx6Pu1lcRe8

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUKIwjB7YSM

      • Funn Lim says:

Because she speaks fluent mandarin. English.. not sure but she looks like she can. I am quite excited about her upcoming role in Da Mo Yao. Is she still in it?

        • sandcherry says:

Don’t expect perfect English (I mean pronunciation) from Fala Chen. She speaks English with some Mandarin accents. She moved to live in the States with her parents at the age of 14. It is rather harder for a teenager to get rid of his/her native accents.

I think she will be best singing songs in Mandarin.

        • Larry 3 says:

Her English is Americanized but her singing is bland with some accent.

        • reader says:

          @Funn Lim
yes, she is still in Da Mo Yao

        • Funn Lim says:

But at least she can speak? Some says can but ended up can’t at all. Still excited about her in da mo yao. I am only excited about 2 people and neither is the lead.

    25. pandamao says:

these tvb artist don’t realize singing requires a lot of work. people are more critical these days. it’s hard to excel in both acting and singing.

wish a lot of these tvb stars just focus on 1 and try to excel on that first.

      • sandcherry says:

“these tvb artist don’t realize singing requires a lot of work” …… Agree.

“people are more critical these days” ……… Don’t agree totally. People these days don’t ask for good singing, they ask for shows (sing and dance … performance). As for album, it is completely a different story. You can change every off-tune note any time after recording. It is so much easier. Unless a singer sings live, otherwise, it does not matter. Even if a singer sings live, people will care very little about the voice; they care about the performance, costumes, guests, stage effects, etc., and not the voice and singing.

        • sandcherry says:

Otherwise, there will not be so many “so-called” singers who cannot sing in the music industry.

        • pandamao says:

kids are not critical but fortunately kids do not make up the entire listener population.

        • sandcherry says:

In fact, it is very sad and bad for the music industry. There are hardly any good singers or good songs. We could only expect good singing from old days.

It is a joke that everyone can become a singer these days. You don’t need to have a good voice or any proper training, and you don’t have to keep polishing your voice after you become a singer. You just need to be pretty good-looking (for female), can dance a bit, and have some other packaging.

        • pandamao says:

          actually –

for the females, i’m pretty fond of mag lam and joyce cheng. both got great attractive voices and not much OTT stage crap.

          there’s still hope.

        • sandcherry says:

Agree that Mag Lam has a good voice, but she needs to work on her singing techniques. I remember watching her in a singing show with Susanna Kwan Kook-Ying. Her singing was very very choppy compared to Susanna Kwan’s. Susanna sang very smoothly while Mag stopped at every word or two. If she wants to be a good singer, she needs to work harder on her singing techniques. She is lucky to have a good and strong voice and should make good use of it.

        • Fox says:

Mag’s voice is a gift and she needs more practices. She is still young, still have many times to improve. I just hope she won’t sleep in the top of a hill.

        • lol says:

mag is still young. I hope she can improve

        • pandamao says:

there’s always room for improvements for anyone at any age.

My only concern w/ mag is EEG allowing her time to work on her techniques. She’s a singer and she seems to have expressed her interest is in singing songs well. However, EEG has placed her in so many other crap that her singing is actually deteriorating.

I’m glad Joyce is doing something else .. she’s a great singer and I can see a great future for her.

        • Kidd says:

“I’m glad Joyce is doing something else .. she’s a great singer and I can see a great future for her.”

I guess signing a smaller company is better for a singer to hone her skill? Joyce signed with Neway.

I like that Joyce know what she wants and strive for it instead of just letting the elders arranged for her. I remember reading that TVB wants to turn Joyce into anothe Lydia Shum. This means they will train her as a host and comedy actress? But, she refuse. She loves singing and wants to be a singer.

    26. Mayee says:

Not everyone has the ingredients to be a singer. These 4 definitely don’t. But I think tvb just want to groom artistes that can both sing & act.

    27. fez says:

fala’s awesome! she’s pretty and alright singer considering its her first time! she just needs more practice and experience. she’s cute.

      • sandcherry says:

If Linda Cheung can sing with her weak voice, perhaps Fala Chen should be able to sing, too.

        • Grace says:

          That’s true. Still…….
I wish they would stop pushing all these actors into singing which is not what they do best!!!!

        • sandcherry says:

If those TVB artistes want to pursue their careers in singing as well, their acting skills will not improve much. It is too much for an artiste to spend time in both acting and singing.

        • claimine says:

But, sandcherry, why should Fala bother improving her acting skill when her very mediocre skills and mediocre performances already gotten her all kinds of awards in Hong Kong and and internationally?

Why bother horning acting skill when role not acting skill determines the reviews of an artiste’s performance? (sarcasm)

        • claimine says:

Haha!sandcherry, that’s how I encourage my young niece to sing on stage by having her browsed LC’s living singing. And it worked.

        • sandcherry says:

Well, Fala Chen only got a Best Support Actress in Malaysia (internationally), not even a TV Queen in Hong Kong. You think her acting skills are superb!

Charmaine Sheh could sing, too. May be not amazing, but her voice is at least at par with Linda & Fala. She did not pursue her career in singing, but rather in acting only. We can see that Charmaine’s acting is getting better and better. She won several awards as Best Actress in Malaysia, Hong Kong. and some other awards in Korea. I think she made the right move. She is very successful in her best acting career.

        • claimine says:

          sandcherry:
2011: 16th Asian Television Award – Best Actress in a Supporting Role

You do know that I’m being sarcastic with my comment? I don’t think Fala’s acting skill is superb, I thought she was very undeserving of her awards. Her Lau Ching’s performance in No Regrets was truly bad but she was awarded for that role not only by tvb but by AOD, Starhub and also by the 2011 Asian TV award. And to top it off a hot contender for TV Queen last night. So why bother? Why bother? With mediocrity running amok in HK entertainment these days, why bother?

        • claimine says:

correction: And to top it off her role in Lives of Omission even made her a hot contender for TV Queen last year. Mediocrity rules TVB. So why bother honing one’s acting skill when Aimee could even make top 5 twice?

        • Vivien says:

LOL its no brainer that those best support awards are rigged

        • Fox says:

@all: Sai Sit Hang is the heir of a music/karaoke company, not a TV company :P . It’s reasonable for his wife or future wife to earn money for him and his company, not for another company lol lol.

      • sandcherry says:

        claimine:

I know you were sarcastic. I did not think Fala Chen, in her role as Lau Ching, should get the “Best Support Actress” award at all, especially in Malaysia last year. Nancy Wu’s acting was much better in “Gun Metal Grey”. Well, Fala was lucky to be awarded. Some people are luckier than others (such as Nancy Wu). Nancy Wu is a better actress than many of the top fadans in TVB, but she has not been given any decent 1st lead roles.

I just feel that if a person pursues in her best profession, she will be able to get better results.

        • sandcherry says:

Fala Chen is not yet perfect in her Cantonese dialogues. It is barely acceptable in modern drama series, but definitely not good yet in ancient drama series.

        • lol says:

linda also sounds forced in ancient series.

    28. Vivien says:

I cant believe some praise Fala’s singing! LOL.today’s standard is low!

    29. lol says:

actually bernice and Myolie are about at par with each other.

    30. sushiroll says:

And just cause they get a recording contract doesn’t automatically qualify them as a “singer”. You need to be actually talented to earn respect.

    31. NP says:

I wonder if this is why Fala keeps turning down TVB series. Maybe she wants to concentrate on being a singer rather than an actress.

    32. Moon says:

Someone just hates her singing but continue on comment about that! Or he/she scares that other people don’t realize how bad her singing is and has to promote for her. So funny! Not because you don’t like

    33. Hannahh says:

Fala def can’t sing, she needs plenty of training with her voice.

    34. apple says:

Fala your acting is not bad, you have an opportunity to win best actress….why… give-up so soon but no harm trying on your singing skills, all the best & wish you could stick back on your acting career and win best actress !

    35. Veejay says:

She really looks like my friend.. gotta tell her of Fala’s album pics.
