Fala Chen to Shoot New Chinese Drama in 2014

Fala Chen (陳法拉) announced that she will be shooting a new mainland Chinese drama in 2014.

After the termination of her management contract with TVB in early 2013, Fala left for New York to further her acting studies and was cast in the Hong Kong horror film Tales from the Dark: Part 2 <李碧華鬼魅系列:奇幻夜>, starring opposite Gordon Lam (林家楝). On reflecting her achievements in the past year, Fala said, “I am most satisfied with having the opportunity to portray a well-accepted role like Holly in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄Ⅱ>, as well as being able to work with such great costars! I also got the chance to work in a horror film, and I greatly anticipate it.”

Fala would be spending the winter holidays with her parents – the first time in years. The 31-year-old is looking forward to making her own DIY Christmas presents for her family and close friends. She excitedly shared, “When I was younger my dream was to meet Santa Claus and see him give me my gifts. Of course, later on I knew that my presents were actually from my father and mother. That was why I told myself that as soon as I could earn money, I would give my cute Santa Claus parents a gift.”

Fala originally planned an overseas trip with her parents this Christmas, but her parents could not come up with an agreement. “One wanted to go, one wanted to stay home. We haven’t figured out what to do yet.” Fala expressed it was heartwarming to see her parents argue. “I rarely have the chance to spend Christmas with them, and seeing them bicker really gives me a sense of home.”

As for Fala’s New Year resolutions, she hopes to welcome 2013 with a challenging mindset. “I am prepared to meet new challenges in my career. I am currently looking through several film and drama scripts, and I am excited to meet my new costars. I hope to find another role that is as likable as Holly!”

  1. Hitting the Mainland market I see. Guess things are working out for her post-TVB.

    1. Yeah, but she lost out on her original dreams and goals as a gold-digger hoping to marry rich and be part of a well-off family………now that she’s out of the Daniel Sit’s family circle, just simply back to a simple, plain and still gold-digging female artist.

    2. She won’t cut it in the mainland market…..too much competition there for her to excel, especially since she really can’t act that well onscreen.

  2. Like able character like Holly? Since when? I honestly found Holiday annoying and a poorly portrayed character by Fala….

      1. Fala was really hardwoking to portray #holiday #honinhei….she has done a great job…well done, fala….keep up ur good work…:-)

    1. Haha! It seems like the majority liked Holiday though. She made it top 3 for the TV Queen audience vote thing.

    2. I like Holiday too (and Fala’s portrayal). very happy to see her as the top 5 nominees in the TVB award

    3. No, I don’t like the character at all. Find her annoying too. Usually skip when I see her appearance.

      1. i also skipped most of her parts. i found her acting boring as usual. her crying scene was horrible…
i hope she will improve in mainland

      1. Fala Chen acted well in “Will Power”, but her screen time was not heavy, while her screen time in “TITS 2” was super heavy though Holiday’s character was not well-written. As a result, I still think Holiday’s character was more impressive to me in “TITS 2”.

      2. Each to its own. I respect your view. Personally I like Fala more in Will Power; but could barely tolerate Holiday, especially her crying scenes and over the top acting.

      3. It is a lot easier to act Eugene’s role in “Will Power”, just a simple, loyal, lovable and smart barrister. Holiday’s character is too complex with all the “ups and downs” developments. It was quite annoying at times as well.

      4. Agree. Fala’s weakness is her cry scenes. Should learn to act with more tears (to impress her audience).

    4. Fala’s potrayal of Holiday is probably one of her best role for me…. love it! Just hope we will still see Fala in more HK and TVB production in the future!

      1. It was pretty hard to act Holiday’s character …… very inconsistent! Don’t think any top fadans can do a better job. Fala Chen didn’t make it amazing, but decent enough.

      2. Was it that hard? Was it that difficult? It was her worst role. It was a joke.

      3. It is a personal choice. Fala Chen seemed to be the 3rd highest voted by audience for Best Actress award. I guess it is not only my personal choice.

      4. Also she was one of the top 5 nominee for Best Actress award, voted by professionals. If her acting was that bad, I am sure she wouldn’t be one of the top 5s.

      5. ” Fala Chen seemed to be the 3rd highest voted by audience for Best Actress award.”

        Was she?!

    5. I agree with Funn her character was not that hard to portray. Her crying scenes were terrible. Her scene on the plane with Jayden with the fake enjoyment of the flight was also terrible. People probably liked her and voted for her because they are her fans not because of her acting. There is a BIG difference.

      1. I don’t think Fala has a big fanbase. I think most people liked her role, Holiday, and in a way Fala grew on them as the series progresses.

      2. Agree. I think Fala Chen has the weakest fan base among those top 5 fadans. The most powerful ones are either Myolie Wu’s or Linda Chung’s. Tavia Yeung’s fan base is pretty big as well.

The reason why I said Holiday is a complex and difficult character to portray is “TITS 2” is a 40-episode drama series and Fala had screen time in almost 35 of them. In other words, she had to carry Holiday in 7/8 of the whole series, and there was a lot of development (drastic changes) in her character. She had to act from a silly, unhappy and bubbling girl, who did not know what to do, to a serious, hard-working and adaptable girlfriend of Sam Tong plus a professional pilot. The process was rather long.

Anyway it is only my perception of Holiday. Other people may think differently.

      3. Fala def does not have that big big fanbase people keep insisting on…Like indisputably among the top 5 fadans, Fala probably does have the weakest fan base.

      4. If an artiste has to act 35 episodes out of 40 in a drama series, she definitely will not be perfect especially those young fadans. Even Sheren Tang or Esther Kwan may not be perfect in every single scene and every emotion. I don’t think Ada Choi was perfect in every single scene (especially in her dialogues) in “Beauty at War”, and her acting is well recognized as a good veteran actress..

      5. Hong Kong audience are not totally blind or diehard fans. If they voted for Kristal Tin, as well as for Fala Chen, for Best Actress award, they should know how to appreciate good acting. If Fala’s acting was totally garbage in “TITS 2”, I don’t believe that she would be one of the top 5 finals. As a matter of fact, Myolie Wu was not in the final top 5. She was pretty honest though. She said she would be a “cold” horse if she won.

      6. Like indisputably among the top 5 fadans, Fala probably does have the weakest fan base.

I really don’t think so. Last time I saw her, she had quite a lot of fans.

      7. If counting in HK only (not mention of oversea fans), among 5 current fadans, I think Fala’s fanbase isn’t the largest nor smallest. It’s in the middle. Those 5, I think Linda is having the most now (Myolie was no. 1 in the past but Linda caught up). Kate increased her fanbase since 2011 up to now and up to her last birthday party, the amount in HK can scare anyone.

      8. What you mean the last time you saw her, she had quite a lot of fans? …

Do you even know what my statement is saying? “Weakest amongst the 5 fadans” … weak meaning, in comparison to the other four (myolie, tavia, kate and linda), Fala has lesser fans. Not that Fala has no fans………

      9. Do you read the following post? I mean Fala isn’t the person I think has the less fans or weakest fanbase. Within HK only, regardless the oversea fanbase. In oversea, the scale of fanbases of those 5 are different to in HK.

      10. I believe that Tavia Yeung also has a big fan base in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

      11. I don’t know about the size of her fanbase. Everyone has fanbase. But her acting in TITS 2 is awful in part because she was wrong for the role. Of course you can justify with maths and say it has XX number of episodes, she was in XX number, etc and so justifies the bad acting parts, but filming rarely is in sequence nowadays. She was bad, she was bad. I don’t see anything complex with Holiday in part because Fala’s performance trivialise those complexities. A more suited actress will show more, but Fala managed to basically screw things up from 1st appearance to the last. She has ZERO chemistry with the actors. It was to me one of the worst performance of the year and her definite worst thus far. I admit I like her as Eugene in Will Power because the role suits her, those pensive, serious, mature type. I also look forward to her being in whatever Chinese drama and if ancient tends to cast HK actresses in super serious mature role which will suit her. I am not her fan but I can see her appeal. But Holiday is not one of them.

      12. If still on math, let’s talk about Lee Youngae of Jewel In The Palace. About 73 episodes? She was in almost every episode except for the first 8 episodes or so? That makes it about 65 or 64 episodes with her in every single episodes, each where she deals with being cheated on, hurt, suffering, people dying, being a maid/slave/etc and she managed to maintain that momentum in all episodes. That was a harder character to pull off because Janggeum can be quite an annoyingly positive character but I never felt annoyed. So what does this mean? Lee Youngae is the planet’s most fantastic actress? No. She is consistent, something Fala isn’t in TITS 2. And Lee Youngae is a far better actress, again because of the consistency. I know Fala has her fans who tries to justifies her poor performance, much like Linda’s fans for Brother’s Keeper but frankly speaking, let’s recognise bad acting and poorly written characters and bad casting for once, so that everyone can move on to their next work which may be much much better. As Fala proven, Will Power was much much better.

      13. Agree that Fala Chen’s acting is not at par with Lee Young Ae’s in “Jewel in the Palace” (or “Dai Cheung Gum”, a Korean ancient drama series). It took me a while to figure out who is Lee Young Ae. “Jewel in the Palace” soared in its popularity in Korea, Hong Kong and even Asia. The drama series was so successful all because Lee Young Ae’s excellent portrayal of Dai Cheung Gum. If Fala’s acting is as good as Lee Young Ae’s, she would definitely have won TV Queen many years ago. Even now, no TVB drama series has beat the viewership ratings of “Jewel in the Palace”.

      14. As a matter of fact, I don’t think there are many Hongkong actresses whose acting skills are as good as Lee Young Ae’s in “Dai Cheung Gum” (or “Jewel in the Palace”. Fala Chen may never be able to catch with Lee Young Ae.

      15. Repeat:
“Fala Chen may never be able to catch up with Lee Young Ae.”

      16. As per Google:
Lee Young-Ae attended Hanyang University and Graduate School of Chung-Ang University, majoring in Movie and Theatre. Of course, her acting was excellent.

Fala Chen was not even properly trained in TVB.

How can we compare Fala’s acting with Lee Young-Ae’s?

      17. A lot of actors never got formal training and they did just fine. A lot of actors did formal training but did lousy.

        That is one poor excuse.

      18. Not sure why you are bringing Lee Young Ae into the picture but I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two of them since every artiste has their own acting style and different levels of acting experience. But I do agree with sandcherry that Fala may never be able to catch up with Lee Young Ae.

      19. If you read the entire sequence of posts you will know why. Everybody is different but there is and should be a standard acceptance of awful acting.

      20. I have read the posts but you’re comparing an actress who did her MASTER degree in theatre and movie to an actress who got into the entertainment industry by entering a beauty pageant. Obviously, Lee Young Ae would most likely excel in her roles due to her acting experiences as an actress and her experiences as a theatre student.. (yes, I’m aware of you saying that training is an excuse..). I’m not saying Fala is perfect but not every artiste can show the right emotions / expected emotions in the scenes and that every artiste has something to work on..

And personally speaking, I do not think there will ever be a standard for awful acting because acting is very subjective. Someone can like the role or drama but there could be someone who hates it as well.

      21. Bubblez
        Good point! A simple example:

Tons of people like Dayo Wong’s acting, and I don’t. I just think he is acting his own self ………….. talking, talking, and talking. But I won’t say his acting is lousy and awful, I would just say “his acting is not my cup of tea!”.

      22. I agree with Funn that it is not always about being formally trained or not. It is about whether you have the innate skill/talent to act well or not. Some people have it and you can see it right away early on their career if they are given the appropriate opportunities and chances. But for some who are given many chances to shine and still do not, truly show that they do not have that innate talent to act well. Being trained or not does not always guarantee that you will become a successful actor/actress.

      23. ” Being trained or not does not always guarantee that you will become a successful actor/actress.”
I agree, but my main reason for posting earlier was I saw it unreasonable and unfair to use Lee Young Ae and compare it to Fala. It’s like comparing a newly debut actress to a veteran actress. But I also believe that an artiste’s acting may not necessary be everyone’s cup of tea as well, hence acting is subjective.

      24. Agreed, fans of Fala and/or TITS2 will vote for Fala no matter what. Let’s face it, Fala rode on the popularity of TIT2 even though her portrayal of Holiday (max 5-yrs maturing process) was lousy. Holiday comes across as an empty superficial shell most of the time. Sorry, but Fala comes across as someone who just wants to make quick easy “big” money without putting in much real time/effort. As Fala said, “money’s already in the pocket”, (meaning you stupid fools).

      25. Agreed! Tavia IMO is a very versatile actress she can potray any character and be convincing

  3. Did she gain some lbs or is it just me? Well, don’t get me wrong.. I love actresses who look healthy. Lol. I’m just saying she looks like she gained weight.

Please update on her upcoming new drama.

P.S. I like her as Holiday.

    1. Fala did not have to film those long hours in TVB. Not surprised if she has gained some weight lately.

It could also be her new hair style.

    2. I swear every fadan actress who takes a break from tvb filming, appears to gain some healthy weight. Filming really does take a toll on their health…

      1. Yeah, out of randomly, I wonder what happens to Christine Kuo?

      2. I think you’re right! She looks healthy but I must say the angle of the photo made her dimple looks odd and her eyes look cross-eyed.

  4. Good luck! (:
I also liked her as Holiday but I do feel that she gradually improved in acting the role!

btw, there is a small typo! I believe it’s 2014?

  5. Good luck, Fala Chen. Hope you will do well in 2014. Will miss you in Cantonese drama series though.

  6. Despite so many people disliked her character (Holiday) and her acting in “TITS 2”, she was one of the actresses in the final. Very happy for her and very classy of TVB (to let her be in the finals).

      1. Haven’t heard Fala being casted for the film. I don’t think the TITS film has a confirmed set cast yet though, so perhaps she might be included since she did voice out earlier that she would look forward to filming a movie for TITS if it is planned.

  7. Fala couldn’t cry at all in TITS2. No tears coming out! But didn’t she win supporting actress award one year for rosy business I think? She did well on that one. I cried when she died at the end. It was good.

    1. As per Wikipedia, Fala Chen won “Best Supporting Actress” award twice, as follows:

      1) “Steps” in 2007
      2) “No Regrets” in 2010

But she never won “Most Improved Female Actress” award in TVB.

      1. TVB awards don’t carry much meaning to me anymore (most are publicity stunts).

      2. i think fala’s acting isnt bad but she isnt really versatile, holiday is diffucult to portray with many emotional moments,i like her the best in lives of ommision, with laughing gor. i hope she will join hktv since they have revived now.

      3. I guess every one has different opinions about Fala’s acting. I don’t think she can’t act too many emotional scenes, but just not good in cry scenes with no or very little tears. She is good in others such as cute and smart characters, like the Princess’ maid in “Can’t Buy Me Love” or Eugene in “Will Power”. She was also pretty good as Ah Ching in “No Regrets”. Personally I think Linda Chung is the weak one in different emotional scenes, but she is super good in cry scenes.

Anyway acting is a very subjective issue. If you like an artiste, you always think he/she is better than others.

      4. Personally I think Fala Chen and Kate Tsui are the most versatile fadans. I wish Kate would forget about her heavy makeup and super high-heeled shoes. She will be more successful in her performance.

      5. I think Tavia yeung is the most versatile among all the fadan. Tavia can cry , can act in different roles well.

  8. Ling: yeah i agree with you. i think right now, tavia is the best among those fadans

  9. Can I just mention about this Fox person who made an earlier comment about Linda having the most fans and than she’s surpassed Myolie and go on to say Kate’s fanbase has increased to an amount where it scares ppl….. What’s ur evidence?

It’s seems like you know the number of fans of each fanclub. Care to share? Or is this based purely on ur personal perception? Do you live in HK and witness all this?

    1. Last time you saw Fala she had a lot of fans. Every artist has a lot of fans with banners. Not every single fan attends events. What you saw was just a portion. Do you seriously think that portion represents the total number? How do you calculate that? You can just tell by ‘looking’? I don’t know where you assume these things but pls be realistic. Your claims have no basis Fox.

    2. There are two basis brought to my conclusion:

      1. Media: FYI, the amount of attendants for an artist in a function, including the ones with banners, is the method for the media to measure the scale of fanbase of an artist. For example, the latest birthday party of Kate (an occasion for most devoted fans to come) had nearly 300 attendants. Isn’t that amount scary enough, lolz? Or Linda had the most fans attended TVB award presentation last week, written by media to be the most welcomed actress. Fala attracted over 100 fans to come for a recent function. That’s the method the media measures their fanbase’s scale to say they have more or less fans than others.

      2. My personal perception: Check with the FC members and base on my own experiences to see the fan scale. Most of HK artists’ official FC will have a list of official fans (who pay for being member). The more members, the larger the fanbase is.

If you can’t understand, you can re-read until your mind is enlightened. I don’t blame you for your insufficient comment about the scale of the fanbase because you don’t seem to have much basic knowledge for HK circle. Please stay with the reality, notasaint.

In short, to prove me wrong, do you have any better basis/evidence to say that my perception is incorrect, that Linda doesn’t have most fans or Myolie didn’t have most fans or Kate’s fanbase is small or Fala’s fanbase is the smallest? If any, please enlighten me. If you fail to prove, your claims have no basis as well.

      1. You are kidding me. Birthday parties is a measure of popularity? Actually I would question why Kate only has 300 fans attending. In ur eyes, that may be a lot but you know other artists can easily have that number. And if the artist is busy and don’t have time for fan gatherings that does not make them popular.

If you are so knowledgable, enlighten us with the exact numbers of paid members from each fan club then. So until you provide those numbers, pls don’t talk like you are an expert.

      2. Oh and btw there are many fans that are not paid members of a fanclub. Like me. Like a lot of ppl here. We don’t have to attend events and hold banners to be considered a fan.

If they are so popular, they could easily win top awards in magazine polls, tv polls, online polls. But that’s not the case is it. Couldn’t Kate’s 300 fans have the power to win this year’s BA? How many fans did you think Kristal has? 10? Lol

Anyway lemme know the exact numbers. I’m curious. Since ur so good, u seem to be the only person here who would know. Thanks in advance Fox. Looking forward to ur response

      3. Lolz, despite writing 2 lengthy comments, you basically can’t provide any proofs. Pathetic.

Please list 5 current Txb actresses that have more than 300 ppl attended a Bday party.

Of course there are many unregistered fans but to have more fans who are willing to pay for FC membership is certainly larger. Do you understand the logic beyond it? Or are you going to say you only consider the fans who aren’t willing to do anything, just keep talking? You know what, that type is merely keyboard warriors.

Any 10 year-old kid can know that a poll can be edited easily by its owner. Lolz, however if you wanna count the polls’ winners, do you mind to list out who won the most in HK? Rmb, HK is the area we are talking about.

Overall, I’m still awaiting for your better method to measure the popularity of an artist.

  10. 100 fans is a lot? 300 fans attending a party is a lot? I must have overestimated your definition of ‘alot’.

    1. 100 fans in a function is “a lot”, according to HK media. You really have no idea about HK circle.

FYI, the media said that that 30 fans in Msia airport for Chilam/Linda which mean “the most”.

List me 5 Txb’s current actresses has more than 100 fans in a function and 300 fans in a Bday party. If you can.

  11. The media said Linda had the most fans. The media said Linda was most favorite to win. Yeh right. Her votes didn’t even come close to Kristal’s. Wasn’t much of a competition. Don’t base everything on what the media says. They play favorites too. You didn’t even see it in real life so stop going around and acting like an expert

    1. Read the below, enough said. You should get some facts, too. Enough of sour grapes.

  12. Kristal have the most votes (100,000+) even beat chi lam’s votes (77,000) this year but do not mean Kristal have “real die heart” fans or large fan base. Kristal won because of this year’s role in BK. I vote for Kristal BUT I am not her fan. Most of u vote for Kristal this year but I am sure u are not her die heart fan.

I definitely think Linda, Myolie and Tavia have REAL die heart fans and large fan base compare to Kristal. Their fans will support them in every function and for many years to come no matter what. Kristal is just one year of fame but the other 3 fadans will survive no matter how bad their role is or acting is.

    1. So true, most fans (including “die-hard fans”) want quality acting rather than their beloved artist to win.
