Fan Bingbing’s “Lady of the Dynasty”: Sex On a Horse?

Chinese historical romance epic Lady of the Dynasty <王朝的女人‧楊貴妃> is currently making its promotional tour around China. Premiering at the end of the month, the film stars Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) as the infamous Yang Guifei, one of the four great beauties of ancient China, and Leon Lai (黎明) as Xuanzong, the Emperor of Tang.

Last week, screenshots of Bingbing’s unique “sex scene” with Leon circulated among Weibo users, becoming a hot topic. In the scene, Leon rips Bingbing’s clothes off while they were straddling a horse. Netizens noted that the scene looked extremely erotic, some joking that they were probably having sex on the horse.

The “sex scene” became so highly circulated online that concern soon followed. As Mainland China does not have a motion picture rating system, there were reports saying that some cinemas had asked the production company to cut the scene. However, Bingbing’s agency denied these reports, calling them “ridiculous.”

While promoting the film in Shanghai, Bingbing thanked the netizens for promoting the movie for her. “I feel that everyone will understand everything once they finish the film. I do want to thank [the netizens], because [their comments] can really help us in the box office. I didn’t have to pay them either… they managed to help us present this artistic film to everyone.”

A netizen commented that Bingbing tends to have sex scenes in every movie she does. Her face turned stern and said, “You see whatever your heart wants to see. If you are an extremely dirty person, no matter what is presented in front of you, your eyes will see nothing but dirt. This is my profession. I am an actor. I’m playing a person. I’m not playing a god. I’m not playing an immortal being. We all seek passion, and we all have emotions and desires. It’s normal.”

Lady of the Dynasty will be released in China on July 30. It also stars Wu Chun (吳尊) and Joan Chen (陳冲).
